THERE WERE 72 NON-ANALYTICAL CASES, WHICH INCLUDE CASES SEEN FOR THE FIRST TIME AT RANDOLPH CANCER CENTER FOR SUBSEQUENT TREATMENT, BUT WHO RECEIVED AT LEAST ONE COMPLETE COURSE OF TREATMENT ELSEWHERE. THE CANCER CENTER SERVED AS A SPONSOR FOR THE THIRD ANNUAL "BIKERS FOR BOOBS" EVENT HELD IN SEPTEMBER. THE LIGHT RAIN CUT BACK ON PARTICIPATION THIS YEAR, BUT THE AMOUNT OF MONEY RAISED HAS INCREASED FOR ALL THREE YEARS SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THE EVENT. THE MONIES RAISED WILL PROVIDE MAMMOGRAMS AND EMERGENCY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO PATIENTS THROUGH THE PATIENT ASSISTANCE FUND AND MAMMOGRAPHY FUND. RANDOLPH CANCER CENTER HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED BY THE QUALITY ONCOLOGY PRACTICE INITIATIVE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM, AN AFFILIATE OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CLINICAL ONCOLOGY, WITH A THREE-YEAR CERTIFICATION FOR OUTPATIENT HEMATOLOGY-ONCOLOGY PRACTICES FOR MEETING THE HIGHEST STANDARDS FOR QUALITY CANCER CARE. ALSO, THE CLINICAL TRIALS PROGRAM UNDERWENT A SIGNIFICANT REVIEW PROCESS DURING 2011 AND 2012 WHICH LED TO A REORGANIZATION AND THE HIRING OF ADDITIONAL STAFF TO MEET GOALS AND STANDARDS. VIRGINIA DEATON, JOINED US IN THE SPRING, AS A CLINICAL TRIALS RESEARCH COORDINATOR. SHE HAS INSTITUTED A NUMBER OF PROCESSES AND PROCEDURES TO REVIEW AND CAPTURE NEWLY DIAGNOSED CANCER PATIENTS EARLIER IN THE PATIENT'S MEDICAL TREATMENT PLAN IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY THEIR ELIGIBILITY FOR PARTICIPATION AND ENROLLMENT IN A CLINICAL TRIAL AT RANDOLPH CANCER CENTER OR AT A NEARBY INSTITUTION. THIS YEAR WE WERE AWARDED RENEWAL OF OUR GRANT FROM THE AVON FOUNDATION TO ASSIST WITH OUR BREAST NAVIGATION PROGRAM. THE GRANTS HAVE ENABLED RANDOLPH CANCER CENTER TO ENSURE THAT PATIENTS CAN OVERCOME BARRIERS, RECEIVE THE CARE THEY NEED AND ARE INFORMED ABOUT TRADITIONAL BREAST HEALTH. SHERRY TATE, BREAST NAVIGATOR AT THE CANCER CENTER, FOLLOWS BREAST CANCER PATIENTS FROM THE TIME THEY ARE DIAGNOSED THROUGH THEIR REMISSION PERIOD. SHE CAN ALSO HELP IN LOCATING RESOURCES TO HELP WITH RECOVERY. THE PROGRAM IS DUAL-FUNCTIONING AND SEEKS TO EDUCATE WOMEN OF RANDOLPH COUNTY ABOUT ROUTINE AND TRADITIONAL BREAST HEALTH AND OFFERS FREE BREAST CANCER SCREENINGS FOR WOMEN WHO ARE OVER THE AGE OF 30 AND HAVE NOT HAD ACCESS TO MAMMOGRAMS BECAUSE OF BEING UNINSURED AND UNDERINSURED. ALSO, THE NC TRIAD AFFILIATE OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE GRANT WAS RENEWED THIS YEAR TO ENSURE THAT UNDERSERVED WOMEN, SPECIFICALLY AFRICAN-AMERICAN, HISPANIC AND OTHER MINORITY POPULATIONS, RECEIVE SCREENING MAMMOGRAMS AT RANDOLPH HOSPITAL'S BREAST CENTER. THANKS TO THIS SUPPORT WE WILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE SCREENING MAMMOGRAMS TO MINORITY WOMEN IN RANDOLPH COUNTY AT NO COST TO THEM. REHABILITATION SERVICES ARE OFFERED FOR PHYSICAL, OCCUPATIONAL AND HAND THERAPY AS WELL AS SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY TO ONCOLOGY PATIENTS WHO HAVE BEEN HOSPITALIZED OR REQUIRE THESE SERVICES ON AN OUTPATIENT BASIS. THE SERVICES CONCENTRATE ON STRENGTH, BALANCE, COORDINATION, ENDURANCE, MOBILITY, RANGE OF MOTION, POSITIONING, TRANSFER TRAINING AND PATIENT AND FAMILY EDUCATION. THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS ARE TAILORED TO ONCOLOGY PATIENTS. CORE THERAPY THE NEUROCOM BALANCE MACHINE DEVELOPED BY NASA IS USED TO ASSIST WITH BALANCE TRAINING TO IMPROVE BALANCE AND REDUCE THE NUMBER OF FALLS. AQUATIC THERAPY THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN ESPECIALLY USEFUL FOR THOSE ONCOLOGY PATIENTS WHO NEED TO START AT A SLOWER PACE AND WHO MAY INITIALLY NEED TO LEARN RELAXATION AS A BASIS TO THEIR THERAPY. WII THERAPY PATIENTS PLAY ON A WII STATION UTILIZING SEVERAL THERAPEUTIC MOVEMENTS TO IMPROVE THEIR RANGE OF MOTION AND STRENGTH. SPEECH THERAPY ASSESSES PATIENTS WITH SWALLOWING AND SPEECH PROBLEMS. OUR PROGRAM CAN TRAIN PATIENTS ON THE USE OF A VOICE BOX AS WELL AS VOICE THERAPY. THE CANCER CENTER PROVIDES ON-SITE COMPREHENSIVE RADIATION SERVICES. THESE INCLUDE: PATIENT CONSULTATIONS, FOLLOW-UP, MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT OF SIDE EFFECTS THROUGHOUT RADIATION TREATMENTS WITH DAILY AVAILABILITY OF BOARD CERTIFIED RADIATION ONCOLOGIST AND ONCOLOGY CERTIFIED NURSING STAFF. SIMULATIONS INCLUDING LARGE BORE CT SIMULATOR, FABRICATION OF CUSTOM IMMOBILIZATION AND TREATMENT DEVICES INCLUDING ALPHA CRADLES, TWO TYPES OF HEAD CASTS, BITE BLOCKS, AND BOLUS MATERIALS. ABILITY TO MERGE MRI, PET AND DIAGNOSTIC CT DATASETS FOR PATIENT PLANNING. ISODOSE PLANNING WITH FULL TIME PHYSICS AND DOSIMETRY STAFF, INCLUDING SPECIALIZED 3D, 4D, AND INTENSITY MODULATED RADIATION THERAPY (IMRT) PLANS. RADIATION TREATMENTS ON SOPHISTICATED STATE OF THE ART EQUIPMENT HAVING RECORD AND VERIFY FOR QUALITY ASSURANCE WITH EACH TREATMENT. IMAGE GUIDED RADIATION THERAPY (IGRT) CAPABILITY IS ACHIEVED WITH ONE BOARD CONE BEAM CT TO ASSURE ACCURATE SETUP WITHIN JUST A FEW MILLIMETERS ON A DAILY BASIS. THESE IGRT TREATMENTS ARE CHECKED DAILY BY THE THERAPISTS AND PHYSICIANS TO CORRELATE SHIFTS IN TREATMENT POSITION ON THE TABLE WITH THE ORIGINAL PLANNING. ONGOING EVALUATION OF TREATMENT AND RADIATION THERAPY OPTIONS THROUGH CART ROUNDS. REVIEW AND ANALYSIS OF ANY NOTED TOXICITIES IN PATIENTS. RANDOLPH CANCER CENTER UNDERSTANDS THAT PATIENTS NEED NOT ONLY PHYSICAL, BUT ALSO EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL CARE. CANCER TREATMENT MUST BE DESIGNED HOLISTICALLY FOR EACH PATIENT. ALL PATIENTS ARE OFFERED ACCESS TO OUR ANCILLARY SUPPORT STAFF WHICH INCLUDES PASTORAL CARE, DIETICIAN, AND SOCIAL WORKERS. MUSIC THERAPY - SOOTHING AND INSPIRATIONAL SOUNDS FROM TALENTED MUSICIANS AND AN ON-SITE BABY GRAND PIANO FILLS THE AIR WITH WARMTH AND COMFORT GIVING PATIENTS AND VISITORS ANOTHER AVENUE FOR RELAXATION. PATIENTS CAN ALSO ENJOY INDIVIDUAL PATIENT MUSIC THERAPY TREATMENT. THE MONEY HAS SINCE BEEN USED TO PROVIDE BOOKS, BROCHURES, FURNITURE AND PERSONAL HEALTH CARE MANAGERS TO SERVE PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS. THE CENTER OFFERS A COMPUTER TO ACCESS ONLINE CANCER RESOURCES, AS WELL AS EXAMPLES OF BREAST PROSTHESES, MASTECTOMY BRAS, WIGS, SCARVES AND HATS THAT CAN HELP PROMOTE SELF IMAGE THROUGH THE TREATMENT PROCESS.
