| Form 990-PF Part IX-A | Form 990-PF Part IX-A: The Foundation was organized to support projects that embody strategic efforts for the preservation and protection of planetary ecosystems (i.e. the environment), as well as efforts that secure the perpetuation and practice of indigenous cultures and ancient religious, spiritual and ceremonial traditions (e.g., certain Native American cultures and their religious traditions). The direct charitable activity of the Foundation (pursuant to which it has been classified as a private operating foundation) is to provide advisory and consulting services to other organizations with similar purposes. Primarily Jeffrey Bronfman, the Foundation's president, performs the activity and his performance of the activity requires substantial and extensive travel and the maintenance of an office.Mr. Bronfman is an internationally recognized philanthropist who has for the last 35 years been involved on a full-time basis in projects related to the preservation of planetary ecosystems and the preservation of indigenous culture and ancient religious, spiritual and ceremonial traditions. The contribution of his specialized expertise to the Foundation allows it to meet its exempt purposes by helping other organizations, in addition to grants, through direct non-monetary assistance in the form of advice and counsel, enabling them to deal more effectively with their own operational and structural issues. The Foundation has and will provide such services to other charitable organizations, including, but not limited to, making introductions to potential financial sponsors. Where appropriate, Mr. Bronfman becomes an active member of an advisory board for newly created charitable organizations, and assists them in forming a coalition with similar charitable organizations, thereby furthering the purposes of the Foundation.Neither Mr. Bronfman nor the Foundation receives any compensation for the services provided to other charitable organizations. All of Mr. Bronfman's direct, out-of-pocket expenses relate to such services, and are paid for by the Foundation. He receives no personal monetary benefit for his efforts. Any trips that Mr. Bronfman makes on behalf of the Foundation are to perform the Foundation's activity and are strictly based on the furtherance of the Foundation's purposes. Mr. Bronfman's personal time on these trips is virtually non-existent.The largest direct charitable activities for the year ending September 30, 2014, relate to Mr. Bronfman's travels to Brazil and Hawaii, through which the Foundation's purpose is met. Total travel and automobile expenses relating to the active conduct of the Foundation's purpose in connection with this travel totaled $23,804. |
