FORM 990, PART III, LINE 1 ORGANIZATION'S MISSION THE MISSION OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES (THE FOUNDATION) IS TO STRENGTHEN THE JEWISH COMMUNITY AND COMMUNITY AT LARGE BY FACILITATING, INCREASING AND ENSURING EFFECTIVE PHILANTHROPY IN LOS ANGELES, NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS MISSION, THE FOUNDATION WORKS WITH PHILANTHROPISTS, NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL ADVISORS TO BUILD MEANINGFUL COLLABORATIONS AND SUPPORT WORTHY CAUSES. THE FOUNDATION AND ITS 1,200-PLUS DONORS SUPPORT A WIDE RANGE OF CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS LOCALLY AND AROUND THE WORLD, JEWISH AND SECULAR, INCLUDING SYNAGOGUES AND JEWISH DAY SCHOOLS, COLLEGES, AND UNIVERSITIES, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES AND ARTS AND CULTURE ORGANIZATIONS.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN ORDER TO FULFILL OUR CHARITABLE MISSION, THE JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES (THE FOUNDATION) OPERATES GRANT PROGRAMS THAT SUPPORT NUMEROUS NONPROFIT CAUSES LOCALLY, NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY IN BOTH THE JEWISH COMMUNITY AND IN THE GREATER COMMUNITY AT LARGE. TWO EXAMPLES ARE BELOW: (A) LOCAL GRANTMAKING IN THE JEWISH COMMUNITY IN THE LOS ANGELES JEWISH COMMUNITY, THE FOUNDATION ADMINISTERS ITS CUTTING EDGE GRANTS INITIATIVE THAT FOCUSES ON NEW AND INNOVATIVE PROJECTS THAT ENCOURAGES CREATIVE THINKERS, SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS AND INNOVATIVE ORGANIZATIONS TO PROPOSE SIGNIFICANT AND TRANSFORMATIVE PROGRAMS OF HIGH VISIBILITY AND IMPACT. FOR EXAMPLE, IN 2014, THE FOUNDATION PROVIDED THE USC DAVIS SCHOOL OF GERONTOLOGY WITH A $250,000 GRANT FOR ZEKENIM: HONORING AND CELEBRATING LOS ANGELES' JEWISH ELDERS TO CELEBRATE THE LIFE STORIES OF JEWISH ELDERS AND TO PROVIDE A VEHICLE FOR THEM TO SHARE THEIR WISDOM WITH YOUNG ADULTS THROUGH ART AND CREATIVITY. YOUNG ARTISTS VISUALLY TRANSLATE THE STORIES OF ELDERS' LIVES AND THEN SHARE THEIR WORKS WITH THE LARGER COMMUNITY. ZEKENIM (HEBREW FOR ELDERS) WILL ENGAGE HUNDREDS OF OLDER JEWISH ADULTS WITH THE GOAL OF IMPROVING THEIR WELL-BEING THROUGH THE CREATIVE PROCESS. (B) GRANTMAKING INTERNATIONALLY IN ISRAEL THE FOUNDATION ALSO SEEKS TO HELP REPAIR THE GREATER WORLD BEYOND LOS ANGELES AND CALIFORNIA. TO THAT END, IT PROVIDES GRANTS TO NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS. FOR EXAMPLE, THROUGH ITS ISRAEL GRANTS PROGRAM, EACH YEAR THE FOUNDATION AWARDS SEVERAL GRANTS THAT ADDRESS CRITICAL SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC ISSUES FACING ISRAELIS LIVING IN ISRAEL. THESE GRANTS ARE AWARDED FOR PROGRAMS THAT ARE ABLE TO HAVE A DRAMATIC IMPACT IN THE AREAS OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMIC SELF-SUFFICIENCY, AS WELL AS JEWISH IDENTITY. ONE RECIPIENT IN 2014, TEMECH (HEBREW FOR INCUBATOR), RECEIVED A $200,000 ISRAEL GRANT FOR ITS EMPLOYER-BASED TRAINING PROGRAM TO PROVIDE JOB TRAINING AND PLACEMENT SERVICES TO HUNDREDS OF UNEMPLOYED AND UNDEREMPLOYED ULTRA-ORTHODOX WOMEN FROM ACROSS ISRAEL. THE PROGRAM IDENTIFIES EMPLOYERS WILLING TO HIRE RELIGIOUS WOMEN WHO HAVE COMPLETED TEMECH'S CUSTOMIZED TRAINING PROGRAM SPECIALLY DESIGNED BY THE EMPLOYER AND IMPLEMENTED BY TEMECH. MANY OF THE JOB OPPORTUNITIES INVOLVE HIGH-TECH-RELATED POSITIONS. GRANTMAKING THROUGH ENDOWMENT FUNDS GRANTS ARE ALSO PROVIDED VIA ENDOWMENT FUNDS THAT THE FOUNDATION MANAGES.
