| Form 990, Part III, Line 4d: Other Program Services Description | OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Other Program Services -Capacity Building Assistance to Regional Chapters and Local Groups: ISEE fosters and supports involvement of scientists from developing countries in Society activities, through reduced dues for members from developing countries and establishment of regional ISEE chapters and local groups throughout the developing world. Toward this effort, offers small grants (~USD500 to USD1000) to its regional chapters and local groups to assist the development of regional ISEE activities, including the boosting of membership. The ISEE Council invites proposals from existing ISEE regional chapters and local groups for activities that will enhance the work, status and future success of the chapter or local group. No small grants were awarded to chapters or local groups in FY 2015.Author AID: ISEE initiated a new program in 2007 to build the capacity of its members from developing countries who wish to publish their environmental epidemiology research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Through Author AID, members from developing countries can request mentoring and receive help getting their research published from experienced ISEE members who volunteer as mentors. Information about authors research and about volunteer mentors experiences is collected through the Members Section of the ISEE website, and authors and mentors are matched by members of the ISEE Capacity Building Committee. Since 2008, ISEE has offered up to ten free ISEE memberships to scientists from developing countries who wish to take advantage of AuthorAID. By offering free memberships, the ISEE hopes to remove financial barriers to prospective authors who wish to become members and avail themselves of this program. In FY 2014 there were no requests for free memberships to qualify for the Author AID mentorship program.Students and New Researchers Network Mentorship Program (SNRN): The SNRN aims to create a global network of students and new researchers that promotes career development and encourages researchers at the early stages of their careers to communicate about ideas, issues, and opportunities in the field of environmental epidemiology. The SNRN is open to all students, post-doctoral trainees, and new researchers (who have fewer than 5 years of experience from their terminal degree) in the field of environmental epidemiology or other related disciplines. Activities include career workshops, an SNRN e-newsletter, and development of career resources and opportunities content on the ISEE website. In FY 2013, the SNRN launched a mentorship program to provide a platform for students and new researchers to interact and learn from more senior researchers in the field of environmental epidemiology. This program facilitates students and new researchers to find mentors within ISEE and encourages successful, productive mentor-mentee relations. Memorial Scholarship Fund: In FY 2013, a memorial scholarship fund was established in memory of Lars Jarup, a long-time ISEE member and renowned environmental epidemiologist. A donation of $1533.70 was made to the fund and special tribute was paid during the 2012 annual ISEE conference. Some of the donated funds were used to produce a DVD of the tribute. The fund will be used to defray travel expenses to an ISEE annual conference for a deserving young environmental epidemiologist researcher, and donations to the fund are accepted. |
