THE LUNG ASSOCIATION'S ASTHMA CLINICAL RESEARCH CENTERS NETWORK (ACRC) CONTINUES TO CONTRIBUTE MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS TO ASTHMA TREATMENTS THROUGH A NETWORK OF CLINICAL CENTERS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY INCLUDING AN ACRC AT THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY IN COLUMBUS, OHIO. DURING THE YEAR, THE ACRC PRODUCED A NUMBER OF MANUSCRIPTS AND EDITORIALS THAT WERE PUBLISHED IN ESTEEMED JOURNALS SUCH AS THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF RESPIRATORY AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE, THE NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE, AND CHEST. FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2014, THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION FUNDED 10 RESEARCH STUDIES IN OUR FOUR-STATE REGION. IN ADDITION, WE PROVIDED $401,904 IN ONGOING SUPPORT FOR THE NATIONWIDE ASTHMA CLINICAL RESEARCH CENTER (ACRC) PROGRAM. RESEARCH STUDIES WERE FUNDED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE, UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY, CINCINNATI CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL MEDICAL CENTER, THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, AND UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI. ADVOCACY EVERY YEAR THE LUNG ASSOCIATION FIGHTS FOR LEGISLATION DEFENDING YOUR RIGHT TO BREATHE HEALTHY AIR, FREE OF POLLUTION OR TOBACCO SMOKE. IN 2013-14, OUR ADVOCACY EFFORTS AGAIN YIELDED IMPORTANT VICTORIES. TOBACCO CONTROL THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY IS A FOUNDING MEMBER OF SMOKE-FREE KENTUCKY, A COALITION OF OVER 400 MEMBERS THAT IS WORKING TO MAKE ALL INDOOR PUBLIC AND WORK PLACES COMPLETELY SMOKE-FREE. THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION IN TENNESSEE CONTINUED TO WORK WITH OUR PUBLIC HEALTH PARTNERS TO ENSURE THE CURRENT STATE LAW PROHIBITING SMOKING IN PUBLIC PLACES AND WORKPLACES WAS NOT WEAKENED. IN ADDITION, THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION IN TENNESSEE SUPPORTED THE GOVERNORS HEALTHY TENNESSEE PLAN AND STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH INITIATIVES TO REDUCE AND PREVENT TOBACCO USE AND REDUCE SECONDHAND SMOKE. HEALTHY AIR WE LAUNCHED OUR NEW HEALTHY AIR CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT THE CLEAN AIR ACT FROM ATTEMPTS IN CONGRESS TO WEAKEN THE LAW AND TO PUSH THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY TO IMPLEMENT ITS LIFESAVING PROTECTIONS. OUR STATE OF THE AIR 2014 REPORT ACKNOWLEDGED PROGRESS AGAINST AIR POLLUTION IN MANY AREAS BUT FOUND THAT ROUGHLY HALF OF ALL AMERICANS LIVE IN AREAS WHERE AIR POLLUTION LEVELS ENDANGER LIVES. THE STATE OF THE AIR REPORT EVALUATES HIGH OZONE DAYS, PARTICULE POLLUTIONS, AND GROUPS AT RISK. THIS ANNUAL REPORT ALSO FOUND THAT NEARLY EVERY MAJOR CITY IN OUR FOUR-STATE REGION IS STILL BURDENED BY AIR POLLUTION. HEALTH EDUCATION EVERY YEAR THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION OF THE MIDLAND STATES IS THERE TO HELP PEOPLE MANAGE THEIR LUNG DISEASE, OVERCOME THEIR NICOTINE ADDICTION, AND LIVE HEALTHIER LIVES. WE ARE A TRUSTED RESOURCE WHERE THE PUBLIC CAN FIND INFORMATION REGARDING VARIOUS LUNG DISEASES, MAKE TREATMENT DECISIONS, AND GET SUPPORT AND TOOLS TO MANAGE THEIR CONDITIONS OR CARE FOR A LOVED ONE. LUNG CANCER RESOURCES INCLUDE CLASSES AND SUPPORT GROUPS; LUNG CONNECTION COMMUNITY (AN ONLINE PATIENT SUPPORT NETWORK); CALL TO ACTION, LUNG CANCER CLINICAL TRIALS, AND INTERACTIVE TREATMENT DECISION TOOLS SUCH AS FACING LUNG CANCER. TOBACCO TO HELP ADULT SMOKERS QUIT, THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION OFFERS FREEDOM FROM SMOKING, WIDELY RECOGNIZED AS THE GOLD STANDARD FOR SMOKING CESSATION CLASSES. FREEDOM FROM SMOKING IS AVAILABLE AS A GROUP CLINIC, AN ONLINE PROGRAM, AND A SELF-HELP BOOK. WE ALSO HAVE A TEEN SMOKING CESSATION PROGRAM, NOT-ON-TOBACCO, THAT IS A USER-FRIENDLY GATEWAY FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR A TOBACCO CESSATION PROGRAM. LUNG DISEASE THE LONG-TERM GOAL OF THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION IS TO REDUCE THE BURDEN OF LUNG DISEASE ON PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. BREATHE WELL, LIVE WELL, OUR ASTHMA MANAGEMENT PROGRAM FOR ADULTS, WAS LAUNCHED FOUR YEARS AGO AND CONTINUES TO EXPAND. THROUGH OUR OPEN AIRWAYS FOR SCHOOLS PROGRAM THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN ARE ABLE TO BETTER MANAGE THEIR ASTHMA AND MISS FEWER DAYS OF SCHOOL. -PROVIDED GUIDANCE FOR ASTHMA-FRIENDLY SCHOOLS - ASTHMA 123 SUPPORTS CHILDREN WITH ASTHMA BY PROVIDING A COMPREHENSIVE FRAMEWORK FOR ASTHMA MANAGEMENT IN SCHOOLS, ENABLING THEM TO STAY HEALTHY IN SCHOOL AND READY TO LEARN. THE LUNG ASSOCIATION PROVIDES CAPACITY BUILDING ASSISTANCE TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES TO ENSURE A SUSTAINABLE, COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO ASTHMA MANAGEMENT IN SCHOOLS. -IMPROVED QUALITY OF LIFE FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH COPD - BETTER BREATHER CLUBS, OUR LONGEST-RUNNING EDUCATIONAL INTERVENTION PROGRAM, IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THEIR MEMBERS BY PROVIDING EDUCATION, RESOURCES, NETWORKING, AND SUPPORT. THE LUNG ASSOCIATION WORKS CONSTANTLY TO REFRESH AND STANDARDIZE THE PROGRAM MATERIALS AND TO PROVIDE EXPERT TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO LOCAL OFFICES THAT ARE MANAGING CLUBS. -CONNECTED PATIENTS AND FAMILIES WITH EXPERT ADVICE - IN ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS AND EDUCATION MATERIALS, PEOPLE WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT LUNG HEALTH ARE REFERRED TO THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION'S LUNG HELPLINE (1-800-LUNGUSA). IN 2013-14, THE NURSES AND RESPIRATORY THERAPISTS WHO STAFF THE HELPLINE TOOK OVER 30,000 CALLS ON TOPICS RANGING FROM USE OF AIR CLEANING DEVICES TO TESTING FOR TUBERCULOSIS. -IN ADDITION THE DIVERSITY COMMITTEE'S ROLE IS TO RECOGNIZE, RESPECT, AND RESPOND TO THE NEEDS OF THE DIVERSE CULTURES AND COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE SERVICE AREA OF ALAMS THROUGH RECRUITMENT AND EDUCATION; PROGRAM DIVERSITY AND PARTNERSHIPS; ADVOCACY; AND RESEARCH.
