AFTER SCHOOL: CAMP FIRE DELIVERS AN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND HEALTHY LIVING AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS TO LOCAL SPECIAL NEED SCHOOLS IN OKLAHOMA CITY. POSITIVE TOMORROW'S, A SCHOOL FOR HOMELESS YOUTH, SPECIAL CARE, A SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN OF ALL DISABILITIES, AND CELEBRATIONS PRE-SCHOOL, A SCHOOL FOR BILINGUAL YOUTH ARE ALL A PART OF CAMP FIRE'S AFTER SCHOOL NETWORK. 40 YOUTH SERVED IN THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS. OUTDOOR SCHOOL: OUTDOOR SCHOOL IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM WHICH SERVES ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL GROUPS (KINDERGARTEN THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE) WHO VISIT CAMP DAKANI FOR ONE SCHOOL DAY. EACH GROUP PARTICIPATES IN TWO ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE BASED ACTIVITIES AND TWO PHYSICAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES. SEVERAL CURRICULUM OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE AND WERE DESIGNED TO SUPPLEMENT THE CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES OF THE CLASSROOM TEACHER. THE OUTDOOR SCHOOL PROGRAM ALIGNS WITH CURRENT OKLAHOMA ACADEMIC STANDARDS INCLUDING COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS (CCSS) AND PRIORITY ACADEMIC STUDENT SKILLS (PASS). ACTIVITIES ARE CHOSEN BY THE TEACHER OR GROUP LEADER AND OFTEN TIE INTO LESSON TOPICS BEING STUDIED IN THE CLASSROOM. CURRICULUM OPTIONS INCLUDE THE STUDY OF TREES, INSECTS, GEOLOGY/EARTH SCIENCE, WATER, AND HABITATS. ACTIVITIES FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL GROUPS INCLUDE COMPASSES, SOUNDS AND OTHER SENSES, HEALTH AND WELLNESS, WATER, AND GEOLOGY/EARTH SCIENCE. EACH GROUP ALSO PARTICIPATES IN TWO PHYSICAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES. THE OPTIONS INCLUDE THE ROCK WALL, ZIPLINE, FISHING, AND THE LOW ROPES CHALLENGE COURSE. ALL CAMP ACTIVITIES ARE LED BY CAMP FIRE STAFF AND ALL MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED. IN PREVIOUS YEARS, THE SCIENCE BASED ACTIVITIES WERE LED BY THE CLASSROOM TEACHER WITH CURRICULUM PROVIDED BY CAMP FIRE. THIS ALLOWS THE CAMP STAFF TO PROVIDE HIGH QUALITY EXPERIENCE FOR EACH GROUP BECAUSE THE STAFF HAS EXPERIENCE WITH THE OUTDOOR SCHOOL PROGRAM, AND HAS RECEIVED TRAINING BEFORE LEADING THE ACTIVITY (VERSUS THE CLASSROOM TEACHER TRYING TO LEAD AN ACTIVITY WITH WHICH THEY ARE UNFAMILIAR). AFTER EACH ACTIVITY, THE CAMP FIRE ACTIVITY LEADER LEADS A FEW MOMENTS OF REFLECTION, ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT THE STUDENTS LEARNED, WHAT POINTS THEY HAVE TAKEN FROM THE ACTIVITY THAT THEY MAY HAVE USE IN THE FUTURE, AND WHAT CHALLENGES THEY FACED DURING THE ACTIVITY AND HOW THEY OVERCAME IT. AT THE END OF THE VISIT, I ALSO TAKE A FEW MOMENTS OF OVERALL REFLECTION AND ASK THE GROUP QUESTIONS ABOUT THEIR FAVORITE ACTIVITIES AND HAVE A FEW STUDENTS SHARE SOMETHING THEY LEARNED DURING THEIR VISIT TO OUTDOOR SCHOOL. EACH GROUP RECEIVES A POST VISIT SURVEY FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS. FEEDBACK HAS BEEN EXCELLENT TEACHERS APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT ALL CAMP ACTIVITIES ARE LED BY CAMP FIRE STAFF, WHICH NOT ONLY ALLOWS FOR A HIGH QUALITY EXPERIENCE, BUT ALLOWS FOR THE TEACH TO BE FREE TO SPEAK WITH PARENTS, VOLUNTEERS, STUDENTS, AND CAMP STAFF OR EVEN PARTICIPATE IN THE ACTIVITY WITH THEIR STUDENTS. TWENTY SCHOOLS HAVE VISITED THE OUTDOOR SCHOOL DURING THE 2013-2014 FALL AND SPRING SCHOOL YEAR. WE HAD OVER 1,310 STUDENTS VISIT OUR OUTDOOR SCHOOL AS WELL AS 366 ADULT TEACHERS AND PARENTS. INCLUDING RENTAL FEES FOR TWO GROUPS WHO HAVE STAYED OVERNIGHT, OVER 11,000 IS EXPECTED TO BE RECEIVED IN FEES FOR OUTDOOR SCHOOL GROUP WHO PAY 8.00 PER STUDENT. IMPROVEMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE THIS YEAR INCLUDE THE ADDITION OF THE GEOLOGY CURRICULUM CHOICE, WHICH INCLUDES FOUR DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES FOR ALL GRADE LEVELS. THE MIDDLE SCHOOL CURRICULUM WAS ALSO ADDED WHICH ALLOWS FOR OLDER STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE MORE CHALLENGING ACTIVITIES THAT FOCUS ON INDEPENDENT THINKING, WORKING AS A TEAM, AND BUILDING ON PRIOR KNOWLEDGE.
