OVER 2,000 FIFTH-GRADE STUDENTS ON BOTH ISLANDS WERE VISITED AND RECEIVED BIODIVERSITY WORK BOOKS DESIGNED BY THE ACADEMY TEAM; TEACHER WORKSHOPS WERE HELD ON BOTH ISLANDS AND BIODIVERSITY LECTURES TOOK PLACE IN A NUMBER OF VENUES. ACADEMY BOTANIST TOM DANIEL COLLECTED PLANTS IN MONTANE SOUTHERN OAXACA IN THE SIERRA SUR, AS PART OF OUR EFFORTS TO EXPLORE REMOTE REGIONS OF THE MEXICAN COUNTRYSIDE. TWO NEW SPECIES OF THE FAMILY ACANTHACEAE WERE FOUND ON THIS TRIP. THE 13TH ANNUAL ANT COURSE WAS CONDUCTED BY BRIAN FISHER IN PERU. THIS WAS THE FIRST EXPLORATION OF ANTS AT THE VILLA CARMEN BIOLOGICAL STATION AND VICINITY. ACADEMY PALEOANTHROPOLOGIST ZERAY ALEMSEGED WAS ELECTED A FELLOW OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE. DR. MATT LEWIN, DIRECTOR OF OUR CENTER FOR EXPLORATION AND TRAVEL HEALTH, HELPED DEVELOP A FAST-ACTING NASAL SPRAY TO TREAT VENOMOUS SNAKEBITES. THE ACADEMY PARTNERED WITH KHAN ACADEMY, A NON-PROFIT WITH A MISSION OF PROVIDING FREE ONLINE EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS. RICH MOOI, CURATOR OF INVERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY, IS BOTH THE VOICE AND ARTIST BEHIND EACH VIDEO IN THE NEW BIODIVERSITY COURSE. THE ACADEMY TEAM PRODUCED ENGAGING NEW VIDEOS, QUIZZES, ACTIVITIES, AND LESSON PLANS. NOW SUPPORTED BY THE ACADEMY, INATURALIST IS A SOCIAL AND ARCHIVAL NETWORK OF CITIZEN SCIENCE CROWDSOURCING WHICH ENABLES AND ENCOURAGES ONLINE NATURALISTS TO HELP IDENTIFY SPECIES OBSERVATIONS. THESE OBSERVATIONS ARE VERIFIED AND REFERENCED BY RESEARCHERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. JACK DUMBACHER, ALONG WITH THE GOLDEN GATE AUDUBON SOCIETY, LED A 12-MONTH MASTER BIRDING COURSE, CONSISTING OF LECTURES AND FIELDTRIPS. MOE FLANNERY LED TWO MARINE MAMMAL ADVANCED IDENTIFICATION WORKSHOPS. THE 18TH ANNUAL SUMMER SYSTEMATICS INSTITUTE MENTORED 13 UNDERGRADUATES, ELEVEN FROM DIFFERENT U.S. UNIVERSITIES AND TWO FROM THE PHILIPPINES. 17,000 TYPE SPECIMENS WERE IMAGED FOR THE WORLD ANT PROJECT. ACADEMY SCIENTISTS PARTICIPATED IN 40 EXPEDITIONS TO 32 COUNTRIES, AS WELL AS MORE THAN 6 FIELDTRIPS TO 4 STATES AND OVER 30 FIELD RESPONSES FOR MARINE MAMMALS. THEY ALSO PRESENTED PAPERS AT MEETINGS AND WORKSHOPS. THE ACADEMY MANAGED 31 FEDERAL GRANTS FROM THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION, NOAA, NIH, IMLS AND OTHER GRANTORS. OVER 75,000 SPECIMENS WERE ADDED TO THE COLLECTIONS. 26,187 WERE DONATED. THE LIBRARY PURCHASED 115 BOOKS, ACCESSIONED 20 NEW ARCHIVE COLLECTIONS, ADDED 4959 IMAGES TO CORSI DIGITAL LIBRARY, DIGITIZED 1800 SLIDES FROM THE ACADEMY 1998 EXPEDITION TO MADAGASCAR, DIGITIZED AND PUBLISHED ON THE INTERNET 39 EPISODES OF SCIENCE IN ACTION, AND ADDED 5 NEW DIGITIZED FIELD NOTEBOOKS TO BIODIVERSITY HERITAGE LIBRARY. MORE THAN 900 VISITING RESEARCHERS AND STUDENTS ACCESSED THE ACADEMY COLLECTIONS. THERE WERE 507 RECORDED USES OF CORSI DIGITAL LIBRARY IMAGES. THE CAREERS IN SCIENCE INTERN PROGRAM HAD 42 STUDENTS. INTERNS RECEIVED TRAINING IN SCIENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY TOPICS, EXPLORED THE NATURAL WORLD THROUGH FIELD STUDY IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, ASSISTED ACADEMY SCIENTISTS WITH THEIR RESEARCH, TAUGHT SCIENCE TO THE PUBLIC ON THE MUSEUM FLOOR (REACHING OVER 180,000 VISITORS) AND PARTICIPATED IN COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER WORK AND YOUTH SYMPOSIA. TASC FORCE (TEEN ADVOCATES FOR SCIENCE COMMUNICATION) HAD 23 YOUTH ENROLLED FOR 224 TRAINING PROGRAMS. TASC DELIVERED 15 PROGRAMS ON THE PUBLIC FLOOR, REACHING OVER 100,000 VISITORS. THE STUDENT SCIENCE FELLOWS PROGRAM ENGAGED 5 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO CARRY OUT AN ORIGINAL RESEARCH PROJECT UNDER THE MENTORSHIP OF AN ACADEMY SCIENTIST. OUR SECOND ITUNES U COURSE, HOW SCIENCE WORKS, DEVELOPED TO HELP MIDDLE- AND HIGH-SCHOOL SCIENCE EDUCATORS, WAS RELEASED IN SEPTEMBER 2013. THERE WERE 203,208 DOWNLOADS FROM ITUNES U. IN MARCH 2014, THE PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTED OCEAN BIODIVERSITY AND CELEBRATED THE NUTRIENT-RICH ECOSYSTEM OF MICRO AND MACRO MARINE LIFE ALONG CALIFORNIA'S COAST. IN JUNE 2014, THE PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTED NEUROSCIENCE AND FEATURED A BRAIN POWER FAMILY FESTIVAL WITH PROGRAMS BY 17 PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS. ALL BRILLIANT!SCIENCE EVENTS FEATURED LECTURES, PRESENTATIONS, CONVERSATIONS, AND ACTIVITIES. CITIZEN SCIENCE IS A PROGRAM TO ENGAGE, ENLIST AND COLLABORATE WITH CITIZEN SCIENTISTS TO DOCUMENT THE BIODIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA. THIS YEAR THE PROGRAM HAD 1,112 VOLUNTEERS.
