ORGANIZATION'S MISSION
990 PART III, LINE 1: In September 2000, the Board of Trustees of The Cooper Union approved the following two-paragraph mission statement: Through outstanding academic programs in architecture, art and engineering, and a Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art prepares talented students to make enlightened contributions to society. The College admits undergraduates solely on merit and awards full scholarships to all enrolled students. The institution provides close contact with a distinguished, creative faculty and fosters rigorous, humanistic learning that is enhanced by the process of design and augmented by the urban setting. Founded in 1859 by Peter Cooper, industrialist and philanthropist, The Cooper Union offers public programs for the civic, cultural and practicable enrichment of New York City. In April 2013, the Board of Trustees voted to reduce the full-tuition scholarship to 50% for all undergraduate students beginning with the class entering in the fall of 2014. In January 2014, the Board of Trustees reaffirmed the tuition plans approved in April 2013 and announced plans to constitute a group of trustees to work with faculty, students, administration, staff, alumni, and friends to clarify the mission for the 21st century and to develop a strategic plan for implementing the mission. 990, PART III, LINE 4A: FALL 2013 (ACADEMIC YEAR 2013-2014) UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS - 868 (850 FULL-TIME, 1 PART-TIME AND 17 VISITING).
