VOLUNTEERS FORM 990, PART I, LINE 6 THE BROAD INSTITUTE DOES NOT FORMALLY TRACK VOLUNTEERS BUT HAS INCLUDED THE NUMBER OF BOARD MEMBERS AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS THAT ARE UNCOMPENSATED. ITS RESEARCH PROGRAM ENCOMPASSES MULTIDISCIPLINARY AND INTEGRATED PROGRAMS IN CANCER, CELL CIRCUITS, CHEMICAL BIOLOGY, EPIGENOMICS, GENOME SEQUENCING AND ANALYSIS, INFECTIOUS DISEASE, MEDICAL AND POPULATION GENETICS, METABOLISM, AND PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS. BROAD TEAMS CARRY OUT LARGE-SCALE PROJECTS TACKLING PROBLEMS THAT CANNOT BE DONE IN A TYPICAL LABORATORY. SUCH TEAMS INCLUDE GENOMICS, IMAGING, METABOLIC PROFILING, PROTEOMICS, GENETIC PERTUBATION, TECHNOLOGY LABS, AND THERAPEUTIC DEVELOPMENT. THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 638 PUBLICATIONS IN 2013 RESULTING FROM BROAD RESEARCH, WITH OVER 3,800 PUBLICATIONS TO DATE. THE BROAD INSTITUTE HOLDS AN ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC RETREAT, A TWO-DAY MEETING FEATURING PRESENTATIONS AND POSTERS ON A VARIETY OF RESEARCH PROJECTS ACROSS THE INSTITUTE, ATTENDED BY ALMOST A THOUSAND RESEARCHERS FROM THE BROAD COMMUNITY. THE BROAD'S EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM ENGAGES BOSTON-CAMBRIDGE AREA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH BY PROVIDING SUMMER INTERNSHIPS AND SEMESTER-LONG RESEARCH PROJECTS. IN 2013, 17 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN A SUMMER SCHOLARS PROGRAM, TWO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN RESEARCH PROJECTS IN THE FALL OF 2013, AND AN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT WAS MENTORED BY THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION AND OUTREACH. IN ADDITION, THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM SPONSORS CLASS VISITS TO THE BROAD. THERE WERE 30 FIELD TRIPS TO BROAD THAT INCLUDED APPROXIMATELY 750 STUDENTS AND 50 TEACHERS. BROAD ALSO TRAVELED FOR SIX WORKSHOPS SERVING 400 STUDENTS AND 8 PANELS WITH A 1,000 ATTENDEES. THERE WERE FOUR MIDSUMMER NIGHTS' SCIENCE AND TWO SCIENCE FOR ALL SEASONS PUBLIC LECTURES WITH APPROXIMATELY 1,500 ATTENDEES. IN 2013, BROAD JOINED NETPALS AND SERVED 23 7TH GRADE STUDENTS EACH WITH A BROAD SCIENTIST MENTOR. TO HELP INSPIRE YOUNG PEOPLE AND INCREASE THE NUMBER OF SCIENTISTS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS, THE BROAD'S DIVERSITY INITIATIVE IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH OFFERS PROGRAMS FOR MINORITIES AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF THEIR EDUCATION AND CAREERS. IN 2013, 16 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, 12 UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, AND A FACULTY MEMBER PARTICIPATED IN THESE PROGRAMS. IN ADDITION, THIS PROGRAM ATTRACTED 210 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO ATTENDED TWO LECTURES DURING THE SUMMER.

JEFFREY FLIER IS AN EMPLOYEE OF HARVARD UNIVERSITY AND DREW GILPIN FAUST IS THE PRESIDENT OF HARVARD; THEREFORE THEY HAVE A BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP. THEY ARE BOTH DIRECTORS AT THE BROAD INSTITUTE.
