	Alcohol Detection: In 2008 and continuing in 2013, the Coalition entered into two consecutive 5-year cooperative research agreements with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) within the US Department of Transportation. Under this agreement, the coalition is working cooperatively with NHTSA to explore the feasibility, the potential benefits of, and ubiquitous use of a range of technologies to prevent drunk driving. This research will determine what is likely to be needed to ensure the successful development and deployment of advanced technology alcohol detection devices. As currently envisioned, the devices are intended to determine the alcohol level of a driver during the process of starting a motor vehicle and to prevent a vehicle from being started when the device registers that a driver's blood alcohol level exceeds the legal limit. These devices must be moderately priced, absolutely reliable, and unobtrusive to the sober driver.
