| Client Note 1 | Client Note 1 - PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED 6/30/2015The Cobb Community Alliance to Prevent Substance Abuse, Inc, (CCAPSA) has undergone several changes in scope since it first began in 1999 as the Cobb Underage Drinking Task Force. In 2014, the Board of Directors voted to broaden the scope of the task force to include other drugs and change the organizations name to the Cobb Community Alliance to Prevent Substance Abuse, Inc, (CCAPSA). The mission of CCAPSA creates strategic partnerships with individuals and organizations to promote health and wellness within the Cobb County community by preventing the onset of substance abuse. Our vision is to have a healthy, drug-free Cobb County community. CCAPSA has stated enforcement, policy and education goals:Limit access to substanceDecrease the ease, ability, and opportunity for youth access to alcohol and other drugsChange the culture and context within which decisions about substance use are madeFormal change in written procedures, ordinances, and laws relating to alcohol andOther drugsShift the consequences associated with youth substance use Provide educational programs, workshops, printed material, and social media communications to educate the community on the impact substance abuse has on our youth and our communityCCAPSA is committed to carrying out its mission and has established core values that include 1) Leadership - the importance of effective board leadership and action to create opportunities to improve systems or process to decrease youth access to alcohol and drugs through advancing strategic enforcement, policy and education goals. It encourages staff initiative and leadership, and strives to be a model nonprofit organization. 2) Excellence - delivering high-quality content and strategies, grounding its work and decisions in insights gained from experience, knowledge and data. It promotes teamwork and diversity of thought to leverage knowledge and skills to continually improve its services. 3) Impact - generating positive change and approaches problems in a practical, creative, and flexible manner. It uses a collaborative approach to advance its work to prevent alcohol, tobacco and other drugs use by adolescents.CCAPSA hosted 6 youth events and 1 parent event during the 2014-2015 school year. A Public Safety Bake Off event was held in October to make cookie trays for our 6 local law enforcement agencies, precincts and 2 college campus police stations. Youth Council members and Sources of Strength students participated in Red Ribbon activities of Instagram contest, poster contests, and PSA video contest during October. A Youth Summit on February 21, 2015 was held at the Cobb County Safety Village and there were 120 middle and high school youth in attendance. During the half day summit youth were engaged in 3 workshops, created 30 second positive PSA messages that were aired on the local Channel 23 news during April Alcohol Awareness Month, heard from a motivational speaker, Aneika Henry, Atlanta Dream basketball player, about the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse, and signed up to participate in 3 future activities designed by the CCAPSA Youth Council members in April and May. CCAPSA hosted a program with MADD during April Alcohol Awareness Month engaging parents and youth in a program called Power of Parents and Power of Youth. Panel discussion with law enforcement and juvenile court judges followed after the training workshop. 75 people were in attendance. In the Fall 2014 Student Health survey 36% of 12th grade students reported drinking in the past 30-day, 9% reported binge drinking in the past 30-day, 4% reported smoking marijuana in the past 30-days, and 2% reported taking prescription drugs not prescribed by a medical doctor. We have seen these number maintain close to the same over the past five years in all areas of the survey. |
