WE CONTINUED THOSE EFFORTS WITH A BIG DAY OF GIVING EVENT ON MAY 5, 2014, WHICH RAISED OVER $3 MILLION FOR 394 NON-PROFIT GROUPS FROM OVER 12,000 DONORS. WE ALSO IMPLEMENTED THE REGION'S FIRST NON-PROFIT DATABASE, KNOWN AS GIVELOCALNOW.ORG, THAT ALLOWS DONORS TO RESEARCH NON-PROFITS AND DONATE 365 DAYS A YEAR.

INNOVATIONS IN EDUCATION: THE FOUNDATION CONTINUES TO SEEK OUT INNOVATIVE BUT PROVEN WAYS OF IMPROVING GRADUATION RATES FOR OUR STUDENTS. WE HAVE RENEWED OUR SUPPORT FOR CITYYEAR, NOW IN ITS THIRD YEAR OF WORKING TO IMPROVE THE THREE FACTORS THAT HAVE BEEN DETERMINED BY EDUCATION RESEARCHERS TO AFFECT HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION RATES: CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM, DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR, AND POOR PERFORMANCE IN MATH AND ENGLISH. WHEN THESE PATTERNS ARE IDENTIFIED AND CHANGED BEFORE STUDENTS ENTER HIGH SCHOOL, THE ODDS THAT THEY WILL GRADUATE ARE VASTLY IMPROVED. OVER A FOUR-YEAR PERIOD, AN ASTOUNDING ONE IN FIVE STUDENTS IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY WILL DROP OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH IS HIGHER THAN THE STATE AVERAGE. TO COMBAT THIS LIFELONG ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DISADVANTAGE, CITYYEAR HAS DEPLOYED 50 TRAINED AMERICORPS VOLUNTEERS TO ADDRESS THESE VERY ISSUES AND ASSIST FIVE PRIORITY SCHOOLS IN SACRAMENTO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, SERVING OVER 2,100 STUDENTS. ON A NEW FRONT, THE FOUNDATION HAS RECENTLY LAUNCHED THE READING 3.0 INITIATIVE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE RCA COMMUNITY FUND, A DONOR ADVISED FUND, WITH A FOCUS ON ACHIEVING READING PROFICIENCY BY THE 3RD GRADE. THIS PARTNERSHIP REFLECTS THE FOUNDATION'S DESIRE TO INCREASE THE IMPACT OF OUR DIRECT INVESTMENTS BY JOINING WITH OUR FUNDHOLDERS TO MAKE SIGNIFICANT GRANTS TO WORTHY PROGRAMS AND FOSTER RESULTS-BASED INNOVATION. ACCORDINGLY, READING 3.0 WILL OFFER GRANTS OF $35,000-$50,000 OVER A 3-YEAR PERIOD TO LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS THAT DEMONSTRATE EFFECTIVE USE OF TECHNOLOGY, MAKE AN IMPACT ON THE "SUMMER SLIDE" BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS, EMPLOY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS, AND INCORPORATE AN EVALUATION COMPONENT.

Return Reference Explanation
Schedule D, Part V, Line 4 Intended uses of endowment funds ENDOWMENT FUNDS ARE EARNINGS THAT HAVE BEEN APPROPRIATED FOR EXPENDITURE AND WILL BE PAID OUT IN THE FORM OF GRANTS, PROGRAM EXPENSES AND/OR EXPENSES NECESSARY TO MAINTAIN THE INVESTMENT ASSETS AND ALSO USED TO GENERATE A SOURCE OF INCOME FOR USE BY THE FOUNDATION IN THEIR ANNUAL OPERATIONS. THE BOARD MAY UNENDOW A PORTION OF THE ENDOWMENT IN TIMES OF EMERGENCY CASH NEEDS.
Schedule D, Part X, Line 2 FIN 48 (ASC 740) footnote The Foundation uses a comprehensive model for recognizing, measuring, presenting and disclosing in the financial statements tax positions taken or expected to be taken on a tax return. A tax position is recognized as a benefit only if it is "more likely than not" that the tax position would be sustained in a tax examination, with a tax examination being presumed to occur. The amount recognized is the largest amount of tax benefit that is greater than 50% likely of being realized on examination. For tax positions not meeting the "more likely than not" test, no tax benefit is recorded. For the years ended December 31, 2014 and 2013, management has determined that the Foundation does not have any tax positions that result in any uncertainties regarding the possible impact on the Foundation's financial statements. The Foundation is no longer subject to examination by taxing authorities for years before 2010. The Foundation does not expect the total amount of unrecognized tax benefits to significantly change in the next 12 months. The Foundation recognizes interest and/or penalties related to income tax matters in income tax expense. The Foundation did not have any amounts accrued for interest and penalties at December 31, 2014 and 2013.
