Development activities included research, engineering and implementation of the latest (a) information and communication technologies (knowledge management and mapping), (b) internet and web technologies (interactive web options, organization, search capabilities), and (c) instructional design technologies for maximizing access to information (Wing Institute's Roadmap). The website houses an online information clearinghouse, providing reviews of research, analysis of current issues, links to related organizations and activities, policy analyses, and resources for education stakeholders.New Web Annotated Resources Pathway: The Wing Institute developed and implemented a new web architecture to give viewers easier access to the volumes of resources (reports, research, data, etc.) now available on the clearinghouse. The new pathway is on the web site's home page and organizes resources by eight different categories with two other levels branching out to organize resources by over 150 distinct topics related to evidence-based education. This adds a third pathway (in addition to the search function and data mining section) for viewers to find information most useful to their needs.Annual Research Focus: In addition to casting a broad net over education issues, research, data, reports, etc. the Wing Institute focuses on one critical education "driver" each year. This year it was school leadership. Through data mining, the Wing Institute analyzed and cataloged the most current research on school principal recruitment, selection, professional development, on-the job training support, compensation, and evaluation.PROFESSIONAL FORUMS Tenth Annual Summit on Evidence-Based Education: The Wing Institute held its Tenth Annual Summit on Evidence-based Education on April 23-24 at the Berkeley City Club in Berkeley California. The Summit model is designed to provide a forum for leading experts to "capture" (review, analyze, update) the latest research and practice advances in evidence-based education, the current state of practice, and resulting policy implications. They bring together a "select" group of evidence-based education "exemplars" from public and private schools and agencies, universities, research institutes, and other stakeholders in a two-day working session. Participants are asked to participate in pre- and post-Summit work activities during the six months preceding the Summit. They are then asked to write commentaries for inclusion in the Summit proceedings. The goal is the production of a meaningful product addressing real world issues in real-time. All resulting materials are disseminated free of charge to the field at large.The theme of the 2015 Summit was: Effective School Leadership: A Cornerstone for Improving Student Performance. Abstract: Second only to teaching, school leadership is the most important school-related factor in influencing student performance, accounting for about a quarter of total school effects. Furthermore, there is increasingly clear evidence as to which principal practices are associated with teaching effectiveness, student achievement and high-performing schools. Yet, there has been little progress in improving the quality of school leadership in K-12 education. Principal recruitment, selection, training, evaluation and support have all lagged far behind best practices. Process: Eleven educational leaders presented original work assessing the current strategies for developing school leaders at virtually all levels of the continuum (national, state, district, school, individual). Using research from a wide range of fields of knowledge, the group examined the obstacles, exemplars, and opportunities for significantly improving the quality of school leadership in K-12 education. Professional Conferences: The Wing Institute gave eleven scholarly presentations at professional conferences across the country sharing its research, reviews, and analyses. Conferences included: the International Conference on Education, the Association for Behavior Analysis, Fresno State University, and the California Association for Behavior Analysis. RESEARCH/ PUBLICATIONS Web-based Evidence-based Education Data-mining: The Wing Institute continues to implement an ongoing process for seeking out and disseminating research, publications, resources, etc. as they related to evidence-based education. This research is analyzed, organized, and disseminated across the Wing Institutes various information channels. The Wing Institute's web site provides a "mind-map" for interested parties to find a subject of interest, access research and policy papers on that topic, and read an analysis / review by Wing Institute staff on the relevance, strength, and details of the research. The Wing Institute reviewed over one thousand studies, identified the most important, and posted them in the data-mining section of its web site. The Wing Institute regularly tracks research being done by hundreds of other research and policy institutes.Web-based Annotated Resources: The Wing Institute developed and implemented a new web based architecture to catalogue and disseminate a large volume of annotated resources (studies, papers, chapters, policy analyses, data, research, policies, etc.). The architecture allows viewers to search out resources across hundreds of discrete topics areas. Each resource provides links, citations and an annotated overview.Graduate Research Funding Program: The Wing Institute provides funding to graduate students interested in doing research in evidence-based education. This program promotes new research in evidence-based education as well as encourages graduate students to select this as an ongoing field of study. The Wing Institute grant program has successfully funded graduate student research at Vanderbilt University, University of Louisville, University of Missouri, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Massachusetts, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Connecticut, University of Oregon, the Ohio State University, and the University of Virginia. Publication of Summit Proceedings: The Wing Institute published fourteen papers and commentaries related to its recent Evidence-based Education Summits. Three particular publications have gained critical acclaim.
