4a (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 11,967,759 including grants of $ 5,427,637 ) (Revenue $ 2,575,129 )
Education, Outreach and Preservation: Provides technical assistance and grants for historic preservation; conducts historic and archaeological surveys, as required by law; administers a grant-in-aid program supporting projects in preservation and interpretation of Minnesota history; administers the National Historic Preservation Act in Minnesota; provides educational programs to K-12 schools including teacher professional development workshops, a sixth grade history textbook and National History Day. Major program accomplishments include a History Player program that had performances in over 300 schools, libraries and senior centers statewide and nearly 7,000 participants in the History Live video conferencing program; History Day once again saw Minnesota lead the nation in the number of medalists and finalists at the national competition. In 2014 nearly 25,000 students from 225 schools participated in History Day, supported by more than 500 teachers, eight professional staff and 40 undergraduate mentors as they tackled the theme "Rights and Responsibilities in History". The Archaeology Program identified undocumented sites, conducted investigations and monitored construction projects; the State Historic Preservation Office disbursed over $6 million for Minnesota history and historic preservation through the federal and state grants programs. In addition 19 properties were added to the National Register of Historic Places and seven projects were awarded using Minnesota historic tax credits.
4b (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 11,678,019 including grants of $ 7,844 ) (Revenue $ 3,396,422 )
Historic Sites: The Historic Sites division administers 26 historic sites throughout the state for public benefit through educational programs, special events and community activities; preserves over 140 historic structures; operates the Capitol tour program; and administers the State Historic Sites Act. Overall attendance in fiscal year 2014 totaled 614,823 visitors as sites started offering more special events and programs throughout the year, such as the "Into the Woods" series at the Forest History Center. Capital facility planning was initiated for Historic Fort Snelling and the Oliver Kelley Farm as part of the MNHS Historic Sites Revitalization strategic priority. In addition to work at these two important sites, the priority includes the major preservation and interpretive needs of the network as a whole. Revitalization work continues to include audience evaluation and targeted program development meant to make sites more inclusive and relevant to their communities as well as more financially sustainable.
4c (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 11,642,534 including grants of $ 80,050 ) (Revenue $ 3,590,841 )
History Center Museum and Education: Maintains the collections used for exhibit purposes in the MNHS's museums and at county historical societies; plans, fabricates, and installs exhibits at MNHS interpretive facilities and museums throughout the state; and orients visitors and tells them stories of important events and persons of Minnesota's past. It also includes auxiliary activities and services at the History Center, such as the museum shops, parking, cafe and building rental. The History Center continued to lead the way in building meaningful museum experiences, becoming Trip Advisor's number one customer-ranked museum and attraction in St. Paul. Three new major exhibits drove attendance, each was supported through Minnesota's Legacy Amendment. The three new exhibits were; American Spirits: the Rise and Fall of Prohibition, Sights, Sounds and Soul: Twin Cities through the Lens of Charles Chamblis and the attendance record breaking exhibit Toys of the 50's, 60's and 70's. Gallery, School and Public programming all continued to thrive in 2014 with new initiatives and reinvented programs that touched visitors, school kids and the public at large.
(Code:   ) (Expenses $ 7,293,897 including grants of $ 3,374 ) (Revenue $ 689,628 )
Library and Collections: Maintains and makes available to the public the MNHS' collection of books, newspapers, maps, photographs, works of art, oral history tapes, private manuscripts and periodicals on Minnesota history; and catalogs, restores and microfilms documents and records to make them available for public use. This program includes the acquisition, preservation and cataloging of public records, as well as the MNHS' responsibilities as State Archivist. Program accomplishments are often measured by public usage. In 2014 the Gale Family Library at the History Center welcomed over 17,000 researchers and student visitors, handled nearly 10,000 requests for information and pulled over 100,000 items for viewing. Our online resources drew significant visitation, including such resources as the "Collections Up Close" blog which had over 100,000 views, the new and improved research guides arranged by topic for the Library Collections; and MNopedia, the free digital encyclopedia of Minnesota history. Once again Family Tree magazine recognized our online family history resources as one of the "Best Websites for Midwest U.S. Genealogy" and the City Pages named mnhs.org a "Best Website."

Return Reference Explanation
Schedule C, Part II-B, Line 1 The MNHS receives a majority of its funding from the State of Minnesota. As a result, there are activities that are performed that may be construed as lobbying activities. The MNHS maintains a presence on the world wide web. Included on our website is a webpage dedicated to legislative updates, the status of our State appropriations and at times a call for members and the public to contact their local legislators in support of the Society's appropriations a/o pending legislation. Our website includes a program that allows the public to search and directly contact their representatives. In addition, the Society employs a Director of Public Policy and Community Relations whose primary function is to act in an administrative capacity in providing budgetary information to the State of Minnesota and to act as a legislative liaison as needed. At times this position may have direct contact with members of the legislative body or the public in a manner such that the activity could be construed as lobbying. Contract personnel may at times provide this same service. The MNHS also organizes a one day rally to encourage the public and our members to meet their legislators and to promote the support of the Minnesota Historical Society. Lastly, the MNHS has employed a lobbying firm to represent the MNHS at the Minnesota State Legislature for specific legislation. Lobbying activities represent an insignificant amount of the Society's annual operating expenses.

Return Reference Explanation
Schedule D, Part II, Line 9 The reporting of conservation easements reported by the Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) relates to actions MNHS undertakes with respect to properties that MNHS monitors as the agent of the State of Minnesota's Historic Preservation Office. The MNHS undertakes such efforts with the following two categories of properties: 1) those transferred by the MNHS or another State of Minnesota agency to a third party (not itself, the state or a state agency) subject to a restriction enforceable by the State of Minnesota's Historic Preservation Office that the property will retain and have ensured its long-term historic preservation as a National Register Property; and 2) those owned by an entity who has received federal grant funding in favor of improvements on the property subject to the requirement that a conservation easement be granted to the State of Minnesota Historic Preservation Office (for a specified time period) as a condition of such federal grant funding. These easements are not recorded in the revenue and expense statement or on the balance sheet or in the audited financial statements footnotes due to the fact that MNHS does not have a financial interest in these properties. In both of the above categories, MNHS undertakes and conducts a monitoring role to ensure the continued preservation of the property's historical significance and character.
Schedule D, Part III, Line 1 The MNHS' collection of artifacts, documents, newspapers, pictures, paintings, tapes, and books is not capitalized because donated values are not readily determinable. Items purchased for the collection are expensed as acquired.
Schedule D, Part III, Line 4 The MNHS' collection of artifacts, historic sites, documents, newspapers, pictures, paintings, tapes, and books preserve the evidence of Minnesota's past. The collection supports the work of the MNHS' programs and provide value to people interested in their history.
Schedule D, Part V, Line 4 The MNHS' endowment consists of 140 individual funds established for a variety of purposes including both donor-restricted endowment funds and funds designated by the Board of Trustees to function as endowments. Net assets associated with endowment funds, including funds designated by the Board of Trustees to function as endowments, are classified and reported based on the existence or absence of donor-imposed restrictions.
Schedule D, Part X, Line 2 The MNHS has received a determination letter indicating that it is exempt from federal and state income tax as an organization described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and corresponding State of Minnesota Statutes. The MNHS monitors its activities and it considers the potential for income taxes if any activities are not related to its exempt purpose. The MNHS engages in activities that are considered as unrelated to its exempt purpose. These activities are subject to federal and state income taxes. However, the MNHS has a net operating loss carry-forward available to offset future taxable income from these unrelated activities. Accordingly, no federal or state tax provision is required in the current year. The net operating loss carry-forward of $156,397 begins to expire in 2021. The MNHS follows the financial accounting standards relating to uncertainty in income taxes. The MNHS had no uncertain tax positions and accordance with regulations the MNHS' federal and state tax returns are open for examination for the fiscal years ended June 30, 2011-2013.
Schedule D, Part XI, Line 2d Cost of goods sold expense as reported in Part VIII, Line 10b.
Schedule D, Part XII, Line 2d Cost of goods sold expense as reported in Part VIII, Line 10b.
