IN 2014 TEN KINDERGARTEN THROUGH GRADE EIGHT CLASSROOMS, INCLUDING AN INDIVIDUAL TUTORING ROOM FOR KIDS MOST AT-RISK OF FAILING, WERE SERVED. A SEPARATE PROGRAM PROVIDING HOMEWORK HELP, LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES, AND SOFT JOB SKILLS WAS ENHANCED FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. THE THREE-HOURS-A-DAY AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM WAS DELIVERED AT NO CHARGE. THE SIX-HOURS-A-DAY SUMMER CAMP WAS DELIVERED AT A NOMINAL CHARGE OF 10 PER WEEK. PARENTS PARTICIPATE THROUGH REQUIRED SERVICE HOURS, ENTRANCE AND EXIT INTERVIEWS, SEMESTER CELEBRATIONS, AND INDIVIDUAL MENTORING. THE 2014 PROGRAM WAS DELIVERED BY A FULL-TIME EDUCATION DIRECTOR, FULL-TIME VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR, TEN PART-TIME CLASSROOM LEADERS, AND 183 VOLUNTEERS. STUDENTS ARE PROVIDED ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY TO COMPLETE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS AND TO INCREASE DIGITAL COMPETENCY. PROGRAM PROVIDES FILLED BACKPACKS AND TWO NEW SETS OF SCHOOL UNIFORMS. FOR THE PAST EIGHT YEARS, 98% OF STUDENTS ENROLLED IN AEP HAVE PROGRESSED TO THE NEXT GRADE LEVEL. THE HOUSING INITIATIVE IS ADMINISTERED BY A NEIGHBORHOOD STABILIZATION DIRECTOR WHO UTILIZES VOLUNTEERS AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH LANDLORDS, RESIDENTS AND OUTSIDE AGENCIES TO WORK TOWARDS STABILIZING NEIGHBORHOOD FAMILIES AND BEAUTIFYING THE BLIGHTED NEIGHBORHOOD. IN 2014 166 VOLUNTEERS LOGGED 1,773 HOURS IN NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUPS, LANDSCAPING, HOME REPAIRS AND RENOVATIONS. THE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS STORE HELPS IMPOVERISHED RESIDENTS PROVIDE FOR THEIR OWN CHILDREN IN A DEVELOPMENTAL WAY. STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS CREATE A FULLY-FUNCTIONING STORE EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD WITH OVER 2,500 BRAND NEW DONATED ITEMS PRICED 75 PER CENT OFF THEIR RETAIL VALUE. IN 2014, 2,363 GIFTS WERE SOLD TO BENEFIT 315 CHILDREN FROM MORE THAN 107 FAMILIES. ONE HUNDRED TWELVE CHILDREN ALSO SHOPPED FOR THEIR PARENTS IN A SEPARATE STORE. MORE THAN 270 VOLUNTEERS MADE IT HAPPEN THROUGH 764 HOURS OF LABOR PROVIDING MARKETING, TOY COLLECTION, REGISTRATION, SET-UP, PRICING,ASSISTANT SHOPPERS, CHECKOUT AND WRAPPING. COMMUNITY GATHERINGS BUILD A SENSE OF COMMUNITY IN THE AT-RISK NEIGHBORHOOD. PARKER STREET MINISTRIES PARTNERED WITH VOLUNTEERS FROM INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE NEIGHBORHOOD TO HOST EASTER EGG HUNT, SUMMER SPLASH, NATIONAL NIGHT OUT, RING-ABRATION AND FALL FESTIVAL. THE EVENTS SERVE 250 RESIDENTS WHO ENJOY GAMES, INFORMAL ACTIVITIES, AND A MEAL. IN 2014, 266 HOURS WERE LOGGED BY 134 VOLUNTEERS AT COMMUNITY GATHERINGS. VOLUNTEERS ARE VITAL RESOURCES FOR DELIVERING PROGRAMS. IN 2014, 811 VOLUNTEERS LOGGED MORE THAN 9,947 HOURS. AS ADVOCATES FOR THE POOR, PARKER STREET MINISTRIES LEADERS ENSURE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCES ARE CONTEXTUALIZED WITH TRAINING ABOUT SPECIFIC TASKS AS WELL AS RELATED ASPECTS OF URBAN MINISTRY. VOLUNTEERS LEAVE THE EXPERIENCE BETTER UNDERSTANDING THEIR FIT IN THE TOTAL MINISTRY, THE PLIGHT OF AT-RISK PEOPLE, AND THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO HELP IN A DEVELOPMENTAL WAY. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES ARE IN PLACE FOR AEP VOLUNTEERS, INCLUDING BACKGROUND CHECKS, TO GUARD AGAINST CRIMINAL ACTIVITY.
