| FORM 990, PART III, LINE 2 | THE DIABETES PREVENTION AND LIVING ACTIVE PROGRAMS WERE ADDED IN 2014. ADDITIONALLY, THE Y STARTED PROGRAMMING IN THE THE WARMINSTER LOCATION IN NOVEMBER 2014. |
| FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A, PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS CONTINUED | THE Y'S TEEN CENTER OFFERS A VARIETY OF VENUES ATTRACTIVE TO THE TEEN POPULATION, INCLUDING POOL TABLES, ARCADE GAMES, HIGH SPEED INTERNET, WIDE SCREEN TELEVISIONS AND A STATE OF THE ART SOUND SYSTEM. PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO HELP THEM DEVELOP SELF-ESTEEM AND GOOD VALUES, INCLUDING COOPERATION, RESPECT, GOOD CITIZENSHIP, AND A STRONG WORK ETHIC. WELLNESS PROGRAMS TARGET YOUTH AND TEENS TO HELP THEM BUILD A STRONG FOUNDATION FOR DEVELOPING HEALTHY LIFESTYLES. TEENS USE THE Y AS A PLACE TO COME AFTER SCHOOL AND WEEKENDS, WHERE THEY CAN HANG OUT, SOCIALIZE, WORKOUT OR SWIM IN A HEALTHY AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT. THE Y'S TEEN LEADERS GROUP (7TH-12TH GRADE) MEETS WEEKLY AND FOCUSES ON COMMUNITY SERVICE BASED PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO HELP THEM GROW AS INDIVIDUALS IN A POSITIVE, FUN ATMOSPHERE. THE TEENS HAVE BEEN ACTIVE IN MANY VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES INCLUDING WORKING AT THE LOCAL FOOD PANTRY, READING AND COOKING FOR A COMMUNITY SENIOR LIVING CENTER, MAINTAINING A GARDEN AT THE HOSPITAL, AND SPONSORING A MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY DANCE A THON TO RAISE MONEY FOR A COMMUNITY HOUSING GROUP. IN 2014, THE Y SENT 15 TEENS TO PERU FOR A SERVICE LEARNING TRIP. THE TEENS SPENT 9 DAYS IN PERU VOLUNTEERING AT ORPHANAGES, PAINTING FACILITIES, AND LEARNING ABOUT CULTURE OF A COUNTRY WHERE HOMES RARELY HAD RUNNING WATER AND ONLY THE OCCASIONAL STREETLAMP PROVIDED LIGHT DURING THE NIGHT. THEY RETURNED WITH A NEW APPRECIATION FOR THEIR LIVES AND THOUGHTFUL WAYS IN WHICH TO PROVIDE SERVICE AND ASSISTANCE TO COUNTRIES IN NEED. THE Y OFFERS FREE MEMBERSHIPS TO ANYONE IN THE 7TH GRADE. RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT SEVENTH GRADE IS A CRITICAL TIME IN A YOUNG PERSON'S LIFE WHEN EXPOSURE TO RISK FACTORS GREATLY INCREASES. RISK FACTORS ARE CONDITIONS OR INFLUENCES THAT HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD FOR UNHEALTHY BEHAVIORS INCLUDING SUBSTANCE ABUSE, DELINQUENCY, TEEN PREGNANCY, SCHOOL DROP OUT AND VIOLENCE. IT IS ALSO DURING THESE YEARS THAT YOUTH BEGIN TO DISTANCE THEMSELVES FROM FAMILY AND POSITIVE SUPPORT SYSTEMS. THE Y MAKES THE SUPPORT ACCESSIBLE AND OPPORTUNITIES THAT EMPOWER THESE YOUTH TO REACH THEIR PERSONAL POTENTIAL. IT ALSO PROVIDES YOUTH WITH THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, CHARACTER AND PASSION TO BE MORE ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY AS ADULTS. THE CENTRAL BUCKS FAMILY YMCA'S PROGRAMS ARE FOR EVERYONE - FROM INFANTS TO THE ELDERLY, RICH AND POOR, PHYSICALLY FIT AND OUT OF SHAPE. EVERYONE CAN FEEL COMFORTABLE TO ENJOY THE LIFESTYLE THAT THEY ASPIRE TO, IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF ACCEPTANCE, SOCIAL INTERACTION, RECREATION AND HEALTHY LIVING. |
