(Required for section 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations; optional for others.)
What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? To support, promote, sponsor, and pursue the following educational, civic, and charitable activities, which are central to furthering the mission of the Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York: Facilitation of communication within a diverse body of Columbia University alumni through regular events and correspondence; Promotion of alumnus-student relationships; Establishment of a regular forum for alumni and students to discuss and debate University policies, news, and other issues of concern to University stakeholders; Enrichment of outstanding Columbia University fourth-year undergraduates through mentoring activities and programs; Improvement of the Columbia University undergraduate schools through activities, programs, and other projects that enhance the physical, social, and academic environment of the university.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 As part of our mentoring program, we organized an April 10 networking dinner that attracted 87 alumni and current undergraduates. Among the career fields represented by alumni were law, investment banking, consulting, medicine, education, journalism, software design, fashion, theatrical design, and foreign policy. The encounters between alumni and students in attendance served as platforms for offering practical career advice, building relationships with like-minded professionals, and discovering new career opportunities, which are the long-term goals of our program to foster mentoring relationships between older alumni and students. Catering costs of $9,218 for the dinner were offset with admissions fees.

29 As part of our mission to be responsive to our supported organization's needs, we organized a February 27 Q&A dinner that attracted 73 alumni and current undergraduates to listen to a Columbia University committee chairman share insights on past examples of the university's long-term strategic planning. Time was also allotted for current students and recent alumni to share their perspectives on the University's prime needs and brainstorm potential solutions. Before and after the talk, alumni and students had opportunities to network during two hour-long sessions. Catering costs of $6,378 were offset with admissions fees.

30 As part of our mentoring program, we organized a November 13 Q&A dinner that attracted 59 alumni and current undergraduates to hear the Dean of Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University discuss the latest science and political debate surrounding stem cell research. His talk was aimed at undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in medicine-related fields; before and after the talk, alumni and students had opportunities to network during two hour-long sessions. Catering costs of $3,600 were offset with admissions fees.

In October, the Society disbursed a $250 grant to the Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York (our supported organization) to enhance the University's scholarship program for students pursuing summer internships (see response to Form 990-EZ, Part I, Line 10, above). This grant was made in keeping with the Society's University improvement and enhancement activities in furtherance of the Society's exempt purpose.

The 1915 Society's other program services did not incur expenses; nevertheless, they provided non-monetary support to our supported organization, the Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York. Among these services were: (A) An Annual Service Project (ASP) - This year's project teamed up undergraduate students to consider how the mental health atmosphere at Columbia could be improved in light of the college's rigor and stress. The project involved stationing posters around campus in high-traffic areas where students could write positive notes of appreciation for others to view and remind themselves of their own personal joys; the project also involved organization of a "Silly Socks Day" to lighten the mood during the intense close-of-semester period. In addition, planning work began on several other project elements that can be carried over and executed in future years. These elements included a meal swap, where students with extra dining allotments at the end of the semester could offer up their surplus meals to other students in tougher financial straits; as well as a campus-wide "Unplugged Day," when students would volunteer to stop using social media for a day in order to deepen their personal bonds with their immediate communities in dorms, classes, buildings, etc. (B) Weekly student-leader forums - Beginning in mid-January, the Society hosted on-campus forums for a diverse set of 15 student-leaders drawn from student government bodies, campus media, Greek life, ethnic heritage groups, and athletics clubs. Participants met on rotating weeknights to maximize potential attendance, and they covered such issues as student suicide and availability of advising resources. Ideas shared at the forums helped to inform the Society's Annual Service Project.

Return Reference Explanation
Schedule A, Part IV, Section D, Line 3 The 1915 Society's supported organization (Columbia University) had a significant voice in our activities as expressed through its close, continuous working relationships with multiple members of The 1915 Society's Board of Directors, who also serve on the governing bodies of our supported organization. Society board member Lisa Carnoy, for example, is the vice chair of Columbia University's Board of Trustees; and Society board member Brian Krisberg serves on Columbia University's Board of Visitors. Other members of the Society's Board of Directors also work in close professional concert with senior Columbia administrators -- Roger Lehecka, for example, is a former Dean of Students at Columbia University and continues to teach as well as consult there in an ex officio capacity. Using their collective knowledge and contacts with Columbia leaders and administrators, these board members were able to weigh in on Board debates with information about Columbia's perspective on its needs.
Schedule A, Part IV, Section E, Line 2a Substantially all of the Society's activities furthered the exempt purposes of Columbia University, our supported organization. Through our three dinners in February, April, and November (see Form 990-EZ - Part III), we brought together older Society members and Columbia University alumni with current Columbia University students on the cusp of graduation. Concurrent with the University's educational purposes, these dinners provide students with the opportunity to develop meaningful links to alumni in a wide range of career fields; they foster mentorships between like-minded individuals at different stages of life; and they offer a forum for guest speakers to brief dinner attendees on hot topics in their professional fields. The annual service project we sponsored (see Form 990-EZ - Part III) also sought to leave Columbia University a better place than when the students first enrolled; by virtue of improving the Columbia environs, campus life, and surrounding neighborhood, the Society endeavored to improve the conditions in which Columbia educates its students, maximizing the benefit of that education. The Society also facilitated communication within the diverse student body of Columbia University by sponsoring regular, small-group sessions on the Columbia University campus where student leaders can broach concerns, debate Columbia University policies, share news, and collaborate on solutions to issues facing a variety of Columbia University stakeholders (see Form 990-EZ - Part III). While these meetings are not formal policymaking sessions, they are nevertheless fora that give student leaders an informal setting in which to foster understanding and find consensus, fulfilling the Society's purpose of bettering the Columbia University community.
Schedule A, Part IV, Section E, Line 2b The fact that Columbia University does carry out activities complementary to Society efforts suggests that these University-led activities would be expanded in the absence of the Society, albeit at an increased expense to University resources. For example, the Columbia Mentoring Initiative "connects first years with returning students (Upper-Class Mentors), and all students with alumni" and gives students "the opportunity to get involved in various 'family trees'"--much like the mentor relationships that the Society fosters. But, the CMI trees are intergenerational student-alumni networks based on cultural/ethnic affiliation; as a result, students who seek networks developed around civic service affinities, professional interests, or other criteria fall outside the scope of Columbia University's program. The Society meets this demand by involving interested students in "family trees" centered around similar career interests and campus leadership experience. Although Columbia University could expand its Mentoring Initiative to include these types of family trees, it would have to recruit additional mentors, create additional programming, host additional receptions, etc. The Society, by conducting this mentoring activity at no cost to Columbia University, is thus functionally supporting Columbia University. It relieves Columbia University of the burden of undertaking a wider range of activities that it does not have the expertise or manpower to provide without reallocating additional funds and personnel from other tasks.
