What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? BIOGRAPHERS INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION PROMOTES THE ART AND CRAFT OF BIOGRAPHY AND SEEKS TO FURTHER THE PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS OF ITS PRACTITIONERS. IT DOES THIS THROUGH ITS NEWSLETTER, ANNUAL CONFERENCES AND WEBSITE.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 2014 WAS A BANNER YEAR FOR BIOGRAPHERS INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION IN ITS ONGOING MISSION TO SUPPORT, PROMOTE, EDUCATE AND ADVOCATE FOR ITS MEMBERS AND THE ART OF BIOGRAPHY. BIO'S FIFTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE, HELD IN BOSTON, BROUGHT TOGETHER MORE THAN 200 WORKING BIOGRAPHERS, AGENTS AND EDITORS TO SHARE STORIES AND LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR CRAFT. AT THE CONFERENCE, BIO ISSUED THREE MAJOR AWARDS: THE BIO AWARD, PRESENTED TO AN INDIVIDUAL WHO HAS MADE A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO BIOGRAPHY (PRESENTED TO STACY SCHIFF); THE PLUTARCH AWARD, THE WORLD'S ONLY LITERARY AWARD PRESENTED BY BIOGRAPHERS FOR THE YEAR'S BEST BIOGRAPHY (LINDA LEAVELL'S BIOGRAPHY OF POET MARIANNE MOORE, HOLDING ON UPSIDE DOWN); AND, FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE HAZEL ROWLEY AWARD FOR THE MOST PROMISING PROPOSAL BY A FIRST-TIME BIOGRAPHER, PRESENTED TO STUDENT HOLLY VAN LEUVEN, FOR HER WORK ON A BIOGRAPHY OF RAY BOLGER. IN DECEMBER, BIO HOSTED ANOTHER FIRST-TIME EVENT AT THE NEW YORK SOCIETY LIBRARY TO PRESENT ITS FIRST AWARD FOR EDITORIAL EXCELLENCE TO ROBERT GOTTLIEB. THE EVENT WAS SO SUCCESSFUL THAT IT WILL BECOME AN ANNUAL TRADITION. AND FINALLY, BIO CONTINUES TO KEEP ITS MEMBERS UPDATED MONTHLY ON ALL THINGS BIOGRAPHY THROUGH ITS ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER, THE BIOGRAPHERS CRAFT, WHICH IS CIRCULATED WELL BEYOND ITS NEARLY 400 READERS.
