THE MARY CUSTIS LEE - 17TH VA REGIMENT CH #7 UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFEDERACY QUALIFIES AS PUBLICLY SUPPORTED BECAUSE IT MEETS THE "10% PLUS FACTS AND CIRCUMSTANCES" TEST UNDER TREAS. REG. 1.170A-9(E)(3) IN THE FOLLOWING RESPECTS:10% OF SUPPORT LIMITATION. THE ORGANIZATION'S PUBLIC SUPPORT PERCENTAGE IS 17.61%.ATTRACTION OF PUBLIC SUPPORT - THE ORGANIZATION ENGAGES IN A NUMBER OF FUND RAISING ACTIVITIES EACH YEAR AND IS CONTINUING TO DEVELOP NEW IDEAS FOR FUND RAISING EVENTS. THE ORGANIZATION DONATED 9 BOOKS IN 2014 TO THE KATE WALLER BARRETT OF THE ALEXANDRIA PUBLIC LIBRARY. CURRENTLY, THE ORGANIZATION HAS A NUMBER OF ITEMS ON LOAN TO FORT WARD HISTORIC SITE. IN ADDITION, THE ORGANIZATION HAS PLANS TO MAKE ITS MUSEUM COLLECTION MORE ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC IN THE FUTURE, THE ORGANIZATION WAS A STOP ON THE MOSBY HERITAGE AREA BUS TOUR LAST SPRING. THE MUSEUM IS NOW OPEN ON A REGULAR BASIS.SOURCES OF SUPPORT - THE ORGANIZATION IS PRIMARILY SUPPORTED BY UNRELATED INDIVIDUAL DONORS WITH AN INTEREST IN THE ORGANIZATION'S EXEMPT PURPOSE. THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE DONATIONS TO THE ORGANIZATION ARE WITHIN THE $5 TO $10 RANGE. ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DUES ARE $40 PER YEAR.REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNING BODY - THE GOVERNING BODY IS ELECTED FROM MEMBERS OF THE ORGANIZATION WHO HAVE AN INTEREST IN THE ORGANIZATION'S EXEMPT PURPOSE.AVAILABILITY OF PUBLIC FACILITIES OR SERVICES; PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN PROGRAMS OR POLICIES - THE MISSION OF THE ORGANIZATION IS TO COLLECT AND PRESERVE THE MATERIAL NECESSARY FOR A TRUTHFUL HISTORY OF THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES AND TO PROTECT, PRESERVE, AND MARK THE PLACES MADE HISTORIC BY CONFEDERATE VALOR. THE ORGANIZATION ENGAGES IN A NUMBER OF ACTIVITIES TO FURTHER THIS MISSION:1. THE ORGANIZATION ADMINISTERS AND PRESERVES THE R.E. LEE CAMP HALL AND A GROWING COLLECTION OF CONFEDERATE ARTIFACTS. THE ORGANIZATION HAS SEVERAL WORKS OF ART ON LOAN FROM PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS, INCLUDING ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH AND THE SAMUEL COOPER CAMP MOS&B. THE MUSEUM IS OPEN ON A REGULAR BASIS.2. THE ORGANIZATION DONATES BOOKS AND SHARES ARTIFACTS IN ITS COLLECTION WITH LIBRARIES IN THE COMMUNITY. IT CURRENTLY HAS ITEMS ON LOAN TO FORT WARD HISTORIC SITE. 3. THE ORGANIZATION DONATES $100.00 ANNUALLY TO THE IVY HILL CEMETERY FOUNDATION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF CONFEDERATE GRAVES.4. THE ORGANIZATION DONATES $50.00 TO THE LEE CHAPEL MAUSOLEUM FUND THROUGH VIRGINIA DIVISION UDC.5. THE ORGANIZATION ADMINISTERS THE CAROLINE KEYS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND. THE FUND PROVIDES UP TO $500 PER SEMESTER FOR REQUIRED TEXT BOOKS TO A VIRGINIA RESIDENT, WITH CONFEDERATE HERITAGE, ATTENDING A VIRGINIA COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY AND MAJORING IN A HEALTH FIELD.6. THE ORGANIZATION PARTICIPATES WITH OTHER AREA MUSEUMS AND HISTORIC SITES IN CIVIL WAR SESQUICENTENNIAL ACTIVITIES.7. THE ORGANIZATION PAID $50 TO SPONSOR A SUMMER INTERN AT THE VAVS (THE VA HOSPITAL IN DC). IN ADDITION, THE ORGANIZATION DONATED APPROXIMATELY $600 WORTH OF TOILETRIES AND SOCKS TO THE VAVS AS WELL AS ABOUT 50 BOOKS AND 100 MAGAZINES.8. THE ORGANIZATION CONTRIBUTES $100.OO ANNUALLY TO THE E. ELIZABETH SNEDDEN SCHOLARSHIP FUND THROUGH VIRGINIA DIVISION UDC. THE SCHOLARSHIP HAS NOT BEEN AWARDED YET, AS THE DIVISION IS STILL BUILDING THE CORPUS. MISS SNEDDEN WAS A MEMBER OF THIS CHAPTER WHEN SHE DIED. 9. IN ADDITION TO THE TOILET ARTICLES FOR THE VETERANS, THE ORGANIZATION ALSO DONATED CANNED/NON-PERISHABLE ITEMS TO THE GRACE EPISCOPAL CHURCH FOOD PANTRY. THIS IS A PART OF THE NATIONAL CAPITAL AREA FOOD BANK. THE VALUE OF THE DONATION IS ESTIMATED TO BE 20 LBS, VALUED AT $50-100. THE ORGANIZATION SENT ABOUT 100 K-PODS FOR THE KUERIG COFFEE MAKERS TO A FORWARD OPERATIONS BASE IN AFGHANISTAN. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO DONATED APPROXIMATELY $100 WORTH OF GIRL SCOUT COOKIES TO WOUNDED WARRIOR WING AT FT. BELVOIR. 10. THE ORGANIZATION DONATED $50 WORTH OF GIFT CARDS TO HOLIDAY SHARING ALEXANDRIA.11. THE ORGANIZATION COLLECTS CANCELLED POSTAGE STAMPS THAT ARE SENT TO BATH ABBEY IN ENGLAND FOR ITS OUTREACH PROJECT. THE STAMPS ARE SENT TO A LEPER COLONY AND USED TO BUILD MANUAL DEXTERITY AND RAISE FUNDS. CONSERVATIVELY, THE DONATION WAS APPROXIMATELY 500 STAMPS LAST YEAR. 12. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO COLLECT MANUFACTURERS' COUPONS THAT ARE SENT TO SERVICE FAMILIES STATIONED OUTSIDE THE U.S. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT 2,000 WERE SENT LAST YEAR.
