	Each year the Elks Lodge conducts many products to extend our charity into the community. This list includes some of the biggest charity programs at the lodge.Hoop Shoot - A nationwide program open to children from 8 to 13 years of age. The lodge coordinates the local competition for La Plata and Archuleta county kids, and the district level competition which includes all Elks Lodges on the western slope of Colorado. Last year more 50 kids participated in the local shoot and 50 kids participated in the district shoot.Scholarship program Every year the Elks Lodge awards scholarships to local high school seniors who are graduating and attending college in the fall. This year we gave out 8 scholarships for a total of $6,000. Community Baby Shower A local event to gather needed supplies for new mothers in La Plata county who would not be able to otherwise afford these necessities. This year we purchased 25 car seats to be given out at Mercy Medical Center so new moms can get their newborns home safely. We also gathered $3,000 in items and donations to give to the local womens shelter.Safety Town Every Summer we setup a miniature town in the parking lot of one of the local schools. The Durango Police Department comes out and teaches the kids how to ride their bikes safely through the town and obey the traffic rules. The Elks Lodge has sponsored this event for decades and more than 80 kids participate every year.Community Garden Project This is our second year to be a sponsor of the Community Garden Project. We donated money and time to build work tables for the Community Garden Project. This project is near Riverview Elementary School. There are plots in the garden for each grade at the school enough room for dozens of other family farm plots. Project Merry Christmas Each year Project Merry Christmas identifies families in La Plata county who otherwise would have gifts to give their children. The Elks put out a Christmas Tree with all of the gifts listed on paper Angels. The members of the lodge purchased enough presents to fill all of the gift requests for 5 families and a total of 13 kids. The Lodge used its charity funds to buy a $100 of groceries for each family to make home cooked meals for the holidays.
