ACTIVITY ONE EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT INFORMATION CAMPAIGN FORM 990-PF, PART IX-A, LINE 1 THE PITON FOUNDATION HAS CONDUCTED THE EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT CAMPAIGN FOR OVER 25 YEARS. THE PRIMARY GOAL OF THIS CAMPAIGN IS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF ELIGIBLE FAMILIES IN COLORADO RECEIVING THE FEDERAL TAX CREDIT, AS WELL AS OTHER TAX CREDITS AIMED AT HELPING LOWER-INCOME WORKING FAMILIES. IN 2014 OVER 345,000 COLORADO FAMILIES RECEIVED THE TAX CREDIT.THE PITON FOUNDATION'S CAMPAIGN USES THREE STRATEGIES:1. A COMMUNITY OUTREACH EFFORT INVOLVING BOTH DIRECT COMMUNICATION WITH LOW- AND MODERATE-INCOME FAMILIES AND A JOINT EFFORT WITH A WIDE ARRAY OF ORGANIZATIONS THAT WORK WITH THIS TARGET POPULATION.2. AN EMPLOYER OUTREACH EFFORT AIMED AT INFORMING BUSINESSES ABOUT THE EITC AND ASSISTING THEM IN HELPING THEIR ELIGIBLE WORKERS TO BENEFIT FROM THE TAX CREDIT.3. A PUBLIC ADVERTISING/MEDIA CAMPAIGN SEEKING TO INCREASE OVERALL PUBLIC AWARENESS ABOUT THE EITC. DURING THE CAMPAIGN, MORE THAN 1,500,000 PIECES OF EITC EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS ARE DISSEMINATED STATEWIDE THROUGH GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS AND EMPLOYERS. THE FOUNDATION'S MEDIA CAMPAIGN INCLUDED: TELEVISION ADVERTISING ON THE FOX NETWORK, PAID ADS IN NEWSPAPERS STATEWIDE, AND PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS IN NEWSPAPERS AND ON RADIO STATIONS. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MILE HIGH UNITED WAY, PITON ALSO SUPPORTED THE 2-1-1 HOTLINE WHICH PROVIDES INFORMATION AND RESOURCES REGARDING THE EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT AND FREE TAX PREPARATION ACROSS THE STATE OF COLORADO.

THIS COURSE GIVES THEM IRS CERTIFICATION TO PROVIDE FREE INCOME TAX PREPARATION SERVICES. IN THE SPRING SEMESTER, STUDENTS WHO HAVE TAKEN THE INCOME TAX CLASS OPERATE A FREE TAX PREPARATION SERVICE AT THE COLLEGE, FOR WHICH THEY RECEIVE COLLEGE CREDIT. TRAINED VOLUNTEERS FROM THE COMMUNITY SOMETIMES WORK AT THE TAX SITES TOO. THE PROGRAM WAS PILOTED AT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF AURORA IN 2007. IN 2014 THERE WERE 18 COLLEGES PARTICIPATING IN THE PROGRAM ACROSS THE STATE, OPERATING 26 FREE TAX SITES.
