Accredited Business services and consumer protection programs - the BBB actively participates in public affairs affecting business and consumer interests and cooperates with governmental bodies and agencies to provide information and counsel to such bodies and to the public concerning such matters. The BBB advocates public and business policies in the best interests of consumer protection and the viability of a free and competitive economy. Programs are developed for Accredited Businesses in support of self-regulation and high standard of business ethics. Measures are taken and services are performed for the protection of consumers against unscrupulous, unconscionable, fraudulent, deceptive, and unethical business practices.

Return Reference Explanation
Part X, Line 2: The BBB is exempt from federal and state income taxes under Section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code and Minnesota Statute 290.05, except to the extent that the BBB has taxable income from businesses that are not related to its exempt purpose. The BBB generates unrelated business income from arbitration services and directory advertising. There were no income taxes resulting from these activities in 2015 or 2014. Accordingly, no provision for income taxes is included in these financial statements. Because the Organization is a public charity, contributions may qualify for tax deductions by the contributors. The BBB has evaluated for uncertain tax positions. Management has expressed that there are no uncertain tax positions as of June 30, 2015. BBB's tax returns are subject to possible examination by the taxing authorities. For federal tax purposes, the tax returns essentially remain open for possible examination for a period of three years after the date on which those returns are filed. BBB believes it is no longer subject to federal and state income tax examinations for the years prior to 2011. During the year ended June 30, 2015, BBB has not incurred any interest or penalties on its tax returns.
