    PART IX-A SUMMARY OF DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES PART IX-A SUMMARY OF DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES Description of William G. Congdon Foundation's programs and activities in 2014 Presentations and guided tours - During 2014, as in previous years, the Congdon Foundation continued its tradition and organized several guided tours of its collection on request by individuals and specific groups of visitors. During those visits foundation staff accompany the visitors and offer comprehensive explanations of Congdon's work and art specifically tailored to each group. These visits have also been a good way to meet people who teach history of art as well as art critics. These visits have often turned into true seminars on how to properly look at a work of art. Seminars and conferences - During the month of August, the foundation took part in an event organized by a renowned family of collectors and art dealer in the mountain town of Fiera di Primiero: the theme of the event was art and its communication. The foundation showed images of Congdon's paintings and of his many notes on art taken from the artist's sketchbooks and writings. The event was photographed for the record by Elio Ciol, a famous art photographer and an artist himself. Communication and web - Starting in the month of January, the foundation began a new program aimed at increasing its presence in the area of online communication. The foundation opened a Facebook page which is updated weekly and where images, previously unpublished texts and announcements are posted in an ongoing dialogue with the community of Congdon followers. The foundation also opened a tumblr page where occasionally more elaborate texts on art, on Congdon, on relevant art collections and other artists are published. The Wikipedia pages on William Congdon, a very useful communication tool, were also edited with more accurate and thorough information. In January the foundation website was completely updated with a more flexible and easy- to-use interface, both in the Italian and English version. Through the website the foundation receives many requests for information as well as requests for publications, reproductions, and DVDs. Special events - On April 8, 2014, after a long preparatory work which lasted some months, a special event took place; it was organized at the US General Consul's specific request to present William Congdon's work and the William Congdon Foundation's activities officially in Milan. The request stemmed from a visit to the foundation in February by the General Consul, his wife and the Cultural Attach. The April event was organized at the official residence of the General Consul on the occasion of the usual annual initiative of the consular delegation in Milan. The event consisted of an exhibition of some 27 paintings among the more significant of Congdon's production and lasted for a week. For the inaugural evening the Consulate invited many representatives of the local government and institutions, of the art world and of charitable organizations. The speaker of honor was the director of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice who spoke briefly but efficaciously of the importance of William Congdon in the art world of the twentieth century. After the Milan initiative, for a few months, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice displayed an important painting from its permanent collection: a St. Mark's Square executed by Congdon in the 1950s, which had not been exhibited there in a long time. - At the beginning of September, with the start of new school year, a new initiative was launched at a multidisciplinary school on the outskirts of Milan (Istituto don Gnocchi, Carate Brianza). The initiative, which lasted four months, consisted in the exhibition of many oil paintings and pastel drawings on loan by the Congdon Foundation in the hall and main dining room of the school. The theme of the food vis--vis the artwork displayed caused an extremely fruitful debate and topic for discussion among students and teachers: it constituted a sort of preparatory work for the forthcoming EXPO Milan 2015 that has stirred the interest of the world precisely on the issue of food and nutrition. Throughout the entire period, many educational initiatives were organized with the other schools that are part of the Istituto Don Gnocchi, including lectures and specific presentations. One event in particular was quite successful: the foundation staff showed the audience film clips from Congdon's life and from interviews conducted during the last years of his life that bore witness to the depth and artistic sensitivity of the author. Immediately following the presentation the school had organized a dinner event where the students of the school had conceived and cooked a meal inspired entirely by the themes and images of the paintings exhibited in the dining room. - In November 2014 through the end of January 2015, a particularly meaningful initiative got underway. The foundation was contacted by the offices of the Milan Dioceses responsible for cultural and pastoral activities with a request to organize the exhibition of a prestigious painting by William Congdon in the historic 1600th-century church of San Raffaele centrally located near the Milan cathedral. The painting chosen by the Dioceses belongs to the Ministry of Economic Development in Rome. The story of this painting is important, because it had "disappeared" right after its execution and subsequent sale in the early 1960s. The exhibition therefore marked the "recovery" of the painting, so to speak, which had been hanging on the walls of a ministerial office not open to the public for over forty years. The exhibition drew thousands of interested people to the church. On this occasion the foundation contributed to the publication of an illustrated catalogue with essays by important art critics. The inauguration event was very well attended and amply reported in the local press and TV stations as well as in some specialized art magazines. - Thanks to the exhibition at the San Raffaele church and at the request of the Cardinal of Milan, the foundation lent the image of the painting, the Nativity, as the accompanying illustration to the yearly Christmas letter sent by to Dioceses to all the families and churches in the area. This proved a great opportunity for the foundation in terms of visibility and communication, as it brought about many new enquiries and requests for information and visits to the collection.
