THE KENOSHA LITERACY COUNCIL'S MISSION IS TO "PROVIDE AND PROMOTE LITERACY EDUCATION IN ENGLISH TO ADULTS IN KENOSHA COUNTY WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF TRAINED VOLUNTEERS". IN 2013-2014, KLC SERVED 549 ADULT LEARNERS WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF 212 VOLUNTEERS. LEARNERS PARTICIPATED IN 9,007 HOURS OF INSTRUCTION. 62% OF LEARNERS WHO PARTICIPATED IN AT LEAST 60 HOURS OF INSTRUCTION ADVANCED ONE EDUCATIONAL FUNCTIONING LEVEL. 37% OF LEARNERS WHO PARTICIPATED AT KLC FOR MORE THAN SIX MONTHS, FOUND EMPLOYMENT AND/OR ENROLLED AT GATEWAY TECHNICAL COLLEGE. 97% CITIZENSHIP STUDENTS PASSED A PRACTICE TEST.

ADULT LEARNER SUPPORT - THE COUNCIL PROVIDES BOTH ESL (ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE) AND ABE (ADULT BASIC EDUCATION) EDUCATIONAL SERVICES. ESL SERVICES ARE FOR LEARNERS WHOSE NATIVE LANGUAGE IS NOT ENGLISH. ABE SERVICES ARE FOR NATIVE-ENGLISH SPEAKING ADULTS WHO WANT TO IMPROVE THEIR READING, WRITING, AND MATH SKILLS. THE PROGRAM ALSO INCLUDES CITIZENSHIP CLASSES. CITIZENSHIP CLASSES HELP ADULTS PREPARE FOR THE NATURALIZATION PROCESS AND IS FOLLOWED WITH AN EIGHT-WEEK SERIES OF CLASSES THAT PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE N-400 FORM, INTERVIEW, AND CIVICS TEST. FOR THE 2013- 2014 FISCAL YEAR, 549 STUDENTS WERE SERVED TOTALING 9,007 STUDENT HOURS.

TUTOR TRAINING AND SUPPORT - THE COUNCIL PROVIDES TRAINING TO THOSE VOLUNTEERING THEIR TIME TO HELP EDUCATE THE ADULT LEARNERS. ONE ON ONE TUTORING IS WHERE STUDENTS WORK PRIVATELY WITH A VOLUNTEER TUTOR TO IMPROVE READING AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS. STUDENTS AND TUTORS WORK TOWARD MEETING PERSONAL LITERACY GOALS THAT INCLUDE EMPLOYMENT AND LIFE SKILLS. DROP IN TUTORING IS PROVIDED IN THE KLC LEARNING LAB. STUDENTS MEET AT SCHEDULED TIMES WITH VOLUNTEER TUTORS WHO ARE THERE TO HELP WITH ASSIGNED WORK. DURING THE 2013-2014 FISCAL YEAR, 212 VOLUNTEERS OFFER 6,786 HOURS OF THEIR TIME TO SERVE ADULT LEARNERS.
