COMPENSATION - DR. FOX FORM 990-PF, PAGE 6, PART VIII, LINE 1 DR. KATHERINE FOX SERVES AS BOTH A DIRECTOR OF THE FOUNDATION AS WELL AS THE FOUNDATION'S VETERINARIAN AND HEAD OF RESEARCH. DR. FOX RECEIVES NO COMPENSATION FOR HER ROLE AS DIRECTOR. THE ENTIRE $82,400 COMPENSATION RECEIVED BY DR. FOX IS HER SALARY FOR HER EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES AS THE FOUNDATION'S VETERINARIAN AND HEAD OF RESEARCH. SHE SPENDS AN AVERAGE OF 40 HOURS PER WEEK ON HER EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES, AS WELL AS AN ADDITIONAL COUPLE HOURS EACH WEEK ON HER DIRECTOR DUTIES.
ACTIVITY ONE FORM 990-PF, PAGE 7, PART IX-A, LINE 1 ONE CHARITABLE PURPOSE OF THE FOUNDATION IS TO CONDUCT RESEARCH AND OTHER STUDIES TO HELP IDENTIFY AILMENTS AND GENETIC FLAWS COMMON TO FRIESIAN HORSES, AS WELL AS METHODS FOR TREATMENT AND PREVENTION OF SUCH ISSUES. THE FOUNDATION HAS COMPILED 19 NECROPSIES DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR, SPONSORED PRESENTATIONS BY THREE INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN VETERINARIANS AT THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING FOR THE FRIESIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION OF NORTH AMERICA (FHANA) IN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, AND PRESENTED AT THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING FOR THE OHIO VALLEY FRIESIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION. IN CONJUCTION WITH BLOOD SAMPLES COLLECTED IN 2012 AND 2013 FOR THE FRIESIAN BLOOD STUDY RESEARCH PROJECT, THE FOUNDATION PRESENTED RESULTS TO THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF EQUINE PRACTITIONERS (AAEP) CONVENTION IN DECEMBER 2013 AND MANUSCRIPTS OF THE STUDY WILL SOON BE PUBLISHED IN A CLINICAL COMMENTARY. SUMMARY RESULTS HAVE ALREADY BEEN PUBLISHED FOR FRIESIAN OWNERS. OTHER RESEARCH PROJECTS INCLUDE WORK WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA - DAVIS ON A CHRONIC PROGRESSIVE LYMPHEDEMA (CPL) STUDY, MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY ON A MEGAESPHAGUS STUDY FOR THE FRIESIAN BREED, AND UTRECHT UNIVERSITY ON AORTIC RUPTURE RESEARCH AND CORNEAL DYSTROPHY.
ACTIVITY TWO FORM 990-PF, PAGE 7, PART IX-A, LINE 2 THE FOUNDATION ALSO ACCOMPLISHES ITS CHARITABLE PURPOSES BY RESCUING FRIESIAN HORSES THAT ARE IN DISTRESS DUE TO HEALTH ISSUES, ABANDONMENT, OR A VARIETY OF OTHER REASONS. DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR, THE FOUNDATION IDENTIFIED THREE SUCH HORSES AND BROUGHT THE HORSES INTO THE FOUNDATION WHERE IT COULD BEGIN A TREATMENT PROGRAM AND ESTABLISH ADOPTION PROTOCOL FOR FUTURE AND ONGOING ADOPTIONS. AFTER HORSES HAVE BEEN RESCUED BY THE FOUNDATION AND UNTIL SUCH TIME THEY ARE REHABILITATED TO THE POINT THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO BE PLACED WITH AN ADOPTIVE OWNER IF ONE IS AVAILABLE, THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES FOR THE CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF THOSE HORSES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS, PHYSICAL THERAPY, AND DIETARY NEEDS. THE FOUNDATION PROVIDED SUCH TREATMENT TO FIVE DIFFERENT HORSES THROUGHOUT THIS FISCAL YEAR, INCLUDING THE HORSES IT RESCUED DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR AND TWO HORSE THAT IT RESCUED DURING PREVIOUS FISCAL YEARS AND WERE STILL REHABILITATING THIS YEAR. WITH RESCUES FOR REASONS OTHER THAN REHABILITATION AND WITH THE COOPERATION OF OTHER OWNERS AND EQUINE PRACTIONERS, AT TIMES THE FOUNDATION HAS BEEN ABLE TO MINIMIZE THEIR EXPENSES AND MAXIMIZE EFFICIENCIES TO PLACE SEVERAL HORSES WITHOUT COMING TO THEIR FACILTY. AS ANOTHER FORM OF RESCUE, THE FOUNDATION HAS ESTABLISHED A CONTINUOUS CARE PROGRAM FOR FRIESIAN OWNERS THAT ENTRUST THE PLACEMENT OF THEIR HORSES SHOULD THEY (OWNERS) DIE OR BECOME INCAPACITATED.
ACTIVITY THREE FORM 990-PF, PAGE 7, PART IX-A, LINE 3 THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES FOR THE CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF RESCUE HORSES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS, PHYSICAL THERAPY, AND DIETARY NEEDS UNTIL A PROPER ADOPTIVE HOME CAN BE FOUND. IN ADDITION, THE FULL TIME VETERINARIAN AND STAFF EMPLOYED BY THE FOUNDATION OFFERS MEDICAL ASSISTANCE, BEHAVIORIAL, AND NUTRITIONAL ASSISTANCE TO FRIESIAN OWNERS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA. HANDS ON BEHAVIORAL AND NUTRITIONAL ASSISTANCE ARE PROVIDED TO OWNERS IN THE REGION BY THE FOUNDATION'S VETERINARIAN STAFF. INQUIRIES ARE PRIMARILY RECEIVED BY EMAIL, TELEPHONE CONTACT, AND THROUGH THE FOUNDATION'S WEBSITE. SINCE THE FOUNDATION HAS CONTACT THROUGHOUT NORTH AMERICA, IT HAS BECOME A CLEARING HOUSE FOR INFORMATION SHARED BY THOSE INQUIRING AND THEIR VETERINARIANS. CONSULTATIONS ARE ALSO CONDUCTED BY THE FOUNDATION'S VETERINARIAN PRIOR TO EUTHANASIA AND COORDINATION OF SAMPLE GATHERING FOR FUTURE RESEARCH. THE FOUNDATION'S WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA ARE CONTINOUSLY UPDATED WITH USEFUL CARE AND HEALTH INFORMATION TO ASSIST FRIESIAN OWNERS.
