    Summary of Direct Charitable Activities
    List the foundation’s four largest direct charitable activities during the tax year. Include relevant statistical information such as the number of organizations and other beneficiaries served, conferences convened, research papers produced, etc. Expenses
    1 Border Crossing, in collaboration with the Museum of Man, the La Jolla Playhouse and the National Conflict Resolution Center, aims to change the nature of the conversation around undocumented immigration. Using a combination of experiential learning and facilitated discussions, the initiative aims to bring together people with diverse perspectives to engage in meaningful conversation about the issue. Our hope is that a successful San Diego pilot will be replicated across the country to promote civil dialogue around what continues to be a highly polarized and controversial topic. 10,000
    2 As a co-convener with the University of San Diegos Institute for Peace and Justice and Women Peacemakers Program, the Gem Foundation, together with other global organizations, is embarking on an ambitious global initiative around Defying Extremism which brings together the often disparate voices of religious leaders, womens rights activists, policymakers, donors and security forces to find common ground and alternative approaches to effectively undermine radicalization and violent extremism. Gems role is evolving toward support for community consultations that connect regional dialogues with local communities as well as national policymakers. 6,393
    3 The Sharing Resources Forum was initially convened in San Diego in August, 2012 and brought together a diverse group of academics, nonprofit organizations and students to explore their experience with people organizing themselves to pool tangible resources (e.g. money, water, land) to accomplish something together that they were unable to do as individuals. As a follow up to the Forum, in July of 2014, Gem convened members of PCIs WE (Women Empowerment) savings program, artists from the International Folk Art Market and current and prospective donors to share stories of collective success and gather anecdotal evidence of effective approaches. 2,293
