	Magazines - the Society's magazines disseminate information about the advancement of the sciences related to the manufacture and utilization of metalcasting. Modern Casting is published monthly with a worldwide readership of 17,000. Metalcasting Design & Purchasing is distributed to approximately 12,000 readers on a bi-monthly basis. The International Journal of Metalcasting(published papers from academia and Industry) is circulated to approximately 300 readers quarterly. The quarterly online only magazine, Global Castings' readership is estimated at 60,000 worldwide.

Return Reference	Explanation
Part X, Line 2:	The Society is exempt from income taxes under Section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code and applicable state law. However, income from certain activities not directly related to the Society's tax-exempt purposes is subject to taxation as unrelated business income. The Society follows the accounting standard on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, which addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under this guidance, the Society may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities, based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of the Society and positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business taxable income (UBIT). There were no unrecognized tax benefits identified or recorded as liabilities during the reporting periods covered by these financial statements. The Society files Form 990 in the U.S. federal jurisdiction. These forms are generally no longer subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service for years before 2011.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6	Membership in the organization shall be available to all individuals and corporations in the metalcasting industry, its supplier industries, related academia and OEM/customers of the industry.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7b	All individual members, with the exception of student members, and those residing outside of North America, shall have the right to hold office in American Foundry Society and to cast one vote on all questions submitted to the membership by letter or other ballot.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11	Board resolution passed August 2009 delegates this responsibility to the Finance Committee for independent review before filing. The Form 990 is also provided to all members of the governing body before it is filed.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12c	All new board members sign the conflict of interest policy at the beginning of their 3 year term. The conflict of interest policy is renewed annually at the August board meeting each year a board member serves. Due to the nature of our industry, there is an awareness of what is happening within to informally monitor throughout the year. If a conflict occurs, the board member would recuse themselves from voting on the matter.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15a	The CEO's compensation review and performance evaluation is initiated by the Executive Committee. An outside independent consultant benchmarks CEO and other executive positions in the organization to other similar associations as well as several surveys utilized such as Assocation Forum of Chicagoland Association Compensation Benefits Survey and American Research National Compensation Study. The consultant developed and facilitates a 360 evaluation of the CEO's performance soliciting input from Board members and Department Leaders. Evaluation results and compensation benchmarks for the CEO position are reported to the Executive Board. Any changes in compensation are provided in writing to the Director of Finance by the AFS President.
