OUR MISSION IS TO STRENGTHEN THE EMOTIONAL, SOCIAL AND COGNITIVE SKILLS OF AT-RISK CHILDREN SO THAT THEY CAN SUCCEED IN SCHOOL, SOCIETY AND IN THEIR LIVES. THUS, WE HELP MAKE PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION EFFECTIVE FOR CHILDREN IN HIGH-POVERTY COMMUNITIES, ULTIMATELY BREAKING THE CYCLE OF POVERTY. POVERTY PRODUCES STRESSORS THAT COMPROMISE STUDENTS' ABILITY TO ATTEND SCHOOL REGULARLY, BEHAVE APPROPRIATELY, AND SUCCEED IN SCHOOL. PARTNERSHIP WITH CHILDREN'S PROGRAM ADDRESSES INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS AS WELL AS THE WHOLE SCHOOL. OUR MASTERS-LEVEL SOCIAL WORKERS PROVIDE CRITICAL INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP COUNSELING FOR THE MOST AT-RISK STUDENTS; THEY COLLABORATE WITH STAFF TO EFFECTIVELY MANAGE THEIR CLASSROOMS, STRATEGICALLY DEAL WITH CRISIS, AND FOSTER A POSITIVE SCHOOL. OUR UNIQUE COMBINATION OF SERVICES LEADS TO INCREASED ATTENDANCE, IMPROVED ACADEMIC OUTCOMES, BETTER STUDENT BEHAVIOR, IMPROVED SCHOOL CLIMATE, AND MORE EFFECTIVE TEACHING, MAKING SCHOOLS SAFER AND BETTER PLACES TO LEARN, AND ENABLING STUDENTS TO SUCCEED.
FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 11
THE FINANCE AND AUDIT COMMITTEE OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS SHALL RECEIVE A PAPER COPY OF THE FORM 990 TO REVIEW AND APPROVE. THE FORM 990, AS APPROVED BY THE FINANCE AND AUDIT COMMITTEE, WILL BE FORWARDED ELECTRONICALLY TO THE FULL BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR REVIEW PRIOR TO SUBMISSION TO THE IRS.
FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 12C
THE DIRECTORS, OFFICERS, AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SIGN A COPY OF THE CONFLICT OF INTEREST POLICY ON AN ANNUAL BASIS. IN ADDITION, DIRECTORS MUST DISCLOSE ANY TRANSACTION WHICH LIKELY AMOUNTS TO AN ACTUAL OR POTENTIAL CONFLICT OF INTEREST TO THE BOARD AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE, AND ABSTAIN FROM ANY DISCUSSION ABOUT THE POTENTIAL TRANSACTION. IF ANY MATTER COMES BEFORE THE BOARD IN SUCH A WAY AS TO GIVE RISE TO A CONFLICT OF INTEREST, THE AFFECTED DIRECTORS SHALL MAKE KNOWN THE POTENTIAL CONFLICT AND, AFTER ANSWERING ANY QUESTIONS POSED BY OTHER TRUSTEES SHALL WITHDRAW FROM THE MEETING FOR SO LONG AS THE MATTER SHALL CONTINUE UNDER DISCUSSION AND SHALL ABSTAIN FROM ALL VOTING WITH RESPECT TO SUCH MATTER. THE AFFECTED DIRECTOR MAY BE COUNTED TO ESTABLISH A QUORUM FOR A MEETING AT WHICH AN ACTION IN WHICH SUCH DIRECTOR HAS AN INTEREST IS BEING CONSIDERED, BUT NOT IN DETERMINING A MAJORITY VOTE TO AUTHORIZE THE TRANSACTION. THE ORGANIZATION DISCLOSES THE TRANSACTION AND THE VOTING DETAILS IN ITS MINUTES. THIS INCLUDES THE NAMES OF THE PERSONS PRESENT FOR DISCUSSION AND VOTING, THE CONTENT OF THE DISCUSSION, INCLUDING ANY ALTERNATIVES TO THE DISCUSSION, AND A RECORD OF ANY VOTES TAKEN. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO DOCUMENTS THE PROCESS IT UNDERTOOK TO VERIFY THAT THE TRANSACTION IS FAIR. TRUSTEES ARE REQUIRED TO DISCLOSE THIS INTEREST IN WRITING ON THE ANNUAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF CODE OF ETHICS AND CONFLICTS OF INTEREST QUESTIONNAIRE.
FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 15
IN THE SPRING OF 2012, WE HIRED A NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. AT THAT TIME, WE WORKED WITH AN INDEPENDENT RECRUITING AGENCY TO SET THE COMPENSATION LEVEL FOR THE NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. EACH YEAR, THE ENTIRE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MUST APPROVE THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR COMPENSATION, CONSIDERING COMPENSATION SUPPLIED IN THE PROFESSIONALS FOR NONPROFITS (PNP) SURVEY, JOB PERFORMANCE, ORGANIZATIONAL BUDGET, AND OUR NYC LOCATION. DOCUMENTATION OF DELIBERATIONS AND DECISIONS MADE REGARDING COMPENSATION ARE ENTERED INTO COMMITTEE AND BOARD MINUTES AND KEPT ON FILE BY THE ORGANIZATION. THIS WAS LAST CONSIDERED IN JUNE 2014. A PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT TOOL IS USED TO REPORT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR PERFORMANCE TO THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE BOARD TO DETERMINE ADJUSTMENTS IN EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION. ANY DISCUSSION DECISION REGARDING EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE IS RECORDED IN THE MINUTES OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. THIS ANNUAL PROCESS LAST OCCURRED IN JUNE 2014.
