|---|---|
| Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B | Auditor prepares draft; Management reviews; full board reviews and approves prior to filing with the Department of the Treasury. |
| Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C | The organization has a board approved conflict of interest policy. Each board member must fill out an annual declaration stating they had no conflicts or identifying the nature of their interested party transactions. |
| Form 990, Part VI, Line 15A | Each year, the full board reviews comparable salaries based on a recognized study and reviews the performance of the executive director to determine if the existing salary falls within these ranges. After a deliberation of this matter, a new salary and benefit package is proposed to the rest of the board for approval. The minutes of the board of directors reflect the nature of this process. |
| Form 990, Part VI, Line 19 | Financial statements are available upon request. |
| Form 990, Part IX, Line 11G | Other fees for services amounting to $468,775 were incurred in relation to domestic and international consulting services provided to the Company. |
| Form 990, Part III - Program Service, Line 4A | Independent Diplomat (ID) is an innovative venture in the world of international relations, diplomacy and conflict prevention. ID was created to facilitate broader participation in diplomatic processes and decision-making, in particular in multilateral and regional forums, such as the United Nations, the African Union and the European Union. ID assists marginalized countries by advising them in diplomatic strategy, giving the weaker side a louder voice. By enabling better participation, our work strengthens the agreements and policies that arise from diplomatic negotiations, reducing the risk of conflict and making the world's diplomatic system more effective and legitimate. ID's principal mode of operation is confidential advice to clients. It works in a non-partisan fashion to advance the interests of the states where it works, and not individuals or individual political parties. It engages both with opposition and civil society groups, and with all levels of government, in order to achieve fair and sustainable results. In carrying out these activities, ID strictly adheres to the following ethical criteria: Observance of international law; respect for international institutions including those of the United Nations and the institutions of government generally; The protection of human rights; Support of democratic and accountable governance; Refusal of support to those promoting unlawful violence. ID's clients are assessed against these criteria by rigorous research, discussion with experts in the field, and by our Advisory Council. In 2014 ID worked with the following clients on select projects: United States Tamil Political Action Council ID provides diplomatic advice to the US Tamil Political Action Council (USTPAC), a Tamil diaspora organization, on seeking greater accountability for the alleged serious crimes committed by both sides during the final stages of the civil war in Sri Lanka, and on how most effectively to draw attention to the continuing human rights abuses against the Tamil community living in the North and East of Sri Lanka. ID has worked closely with USTPAC to assume a leadership role amongst diaspora groups in the diplomacy surrounding the activities associated with the UN Human Rights Council. Somaliland ID works with the Government of Somaliland on its diplomatic strategy and outreach to the international community, including its quest for international recognition. As a unique hub of relative peace and democracy in the Horn of Africa, but with little credit for its achievements, ID has assisted Somaliland to take a long-term strategic approach to achieving its international objectives. The UK Foreign Office has described ID's assistance to the Government of Somaliland as 'transformative' in its effect on Somaliland's foreign policy, which was further enhanced by ID's on-the-ground presence in Hargeisa. Climate Change ID advises the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) and the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) on the complex international climate change negotiations under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Working inside the negotiating room, ID's legal and diplomatic assistance amplifies the voice of the most vulnerable countries at the frontline of climate change impacts. ID's work with AOSIS and the Cartagena Dialogue on Progressive Action was instrumental in delivering the Cancun and Durban Agreements as stepping stones towards a new international architecture on climate change. The meeting produced the Majuro Declaration for Climate Leadership, a ground breaking and globally-relevant call to action from a region of the world's most climate-vulnerable countries. ID's support to the RMI President, foreign minister, ambassadors and senior officials as they prepare for high-level diplomatic encounters and international negotiations has helped the tiny atoll nation to emerge as one of the most vocal and influential vulnerable country voices in climate diplomacy. ID's work with RMI on diplomatic and political strategy, combined with a dedicated media capacity, has enabled RMI to use its compelling moral authority (as one of only four countries lying at less than 2 meters above sea level) and early-mover status in the transition to renewable energy to push for more ambitious outcomes from international negotiations and ask the world's largest emitters to follow RMI's lead. The success of ID's work recently saw RMI receive an honorable mention in The Economist's 2014 'Country of the Year' award. ID's support to RMI and AOSIS is ongoing. National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces ID works with the New York and Washington, D.C. offices of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces (Syrian Coalition) to help it develop stronger diplomatic relations with UN Member States and the U.S. government in order to accelerate international efforts to support a democratic political transition in Syria. With ID's assistance in 2014, the Syrian Coalition participated strongly and effectively in peace talks in Geneva. Also in 2014, ID worked with the Syrian Coalition to secure concrete commitments and policy proposals from the Security Council to improve Syria's humanitarian situation. As a result of these efforts in July, the Security Council adopted resolutions which, for the first time, authorized cross-border access without Syrian regime consent, enabling aid to reach more than 2 million people trapped behind borders. Western Sahara The Frente POLISARIO of Western Sahara is ID's most marginalized client. ID advises the POLISARIO's political leadership on its objective of securing a process of self-determination for the people of Western Sahara and reasserting its control over Western Sahara's rich natural resources. ID's advice has had a significant impact on the POLISARIO's foreign policy, in particular through efforts to highlight escalating human rights abuses in the Occupied Territory, as well as the illegal exploitation of Western Sahara's phosphates and fisheries resources by Morocco and complicit foreign entities. ID also pursued a number of non-traditional methods of public diplomacy for the POLISARIO. From mid-2014, ID worked with the Dutch design studio Metahaven on an online campaign to depict the situation in Western Sahara in a compelling and provocative way. In August 2014, the campaign was featured on the cover of Art in America magazine. |
