| Part IX-A | What is important in the disability experience is knowing that you are not alone. There are thousands of persons with disabilities thinking similar thoughts and having similar experiences. HAV-IT Services offers resources for persons with disabilities and advocates consumer-driven policies for self-determination, self-respect and dignity. Independent Living is a philosophy and a movement of people with disabilities who work for self-determination, equal opportunities and self-respect. Independent Living means that individuals with developmental disabilities want the same choices and control in their every-day lives that our non-disabled brothers and sisters, neighbors and friends take for granted.Since we assist these individuals and realize they are the best experts on expressing what their needs are, we assist them to show the solutions they want, so these individuals are in charge of their own lives, think and speak for themselves - just as everybody else. To this end we advocate that we must support and learn from each other, organize and work for changes that lead to the legal protection of these individual human and civil rights. As a private, not-for-profit agency providing support services to people with developmental disabilities HAV-IT Services is required to be licensed by the North Dakota Department of Human Services. Such license authorizes HAV-IT to provide a variety of services. Trained staff provides support to people with developmental disabilities who live in their own home or apartment. Such activities include, preparation and meal planning, laundry, housekeeping, money management, health and hygiene, recreation, and leisure time.Staff schedules are designed to provide such support services when the individual needs support different from the group home programs where staff are scheduled 24 hours per day.Families who have children with developmental disabilities living in their home have many commitments relative to meeting the needs of their child. The In Home Support program offers eligible families to contact HAV-IT to schedule trained staff to provide additional assistance in child care. This allows families to attend to other household activities as well as focusing attention to other members of the family who do not have disabilities. Individualized Supported Living Arrangements (ISLA) purpose is to remove barriers and provide support to individuals with disabilities so they can live and work more independently in their homes and communities.HAV-IT Services has clients living in various homes and apartment complexes within the city of Harvey and surrounding communities. Thirty-two individuals were served by HAV-IT Services programs throughout the fiscal year. Services include: independent living skills training, personal assistance services, housing assistance, transportation assistance, social and recreational activities, community awareness and education, self and systems advocacy, peer counseling, information and referral, community education, technical assistance to businesses and local governments, and other services as appropriate. |
