| Current Year Facts and Circumstances: The Shevchenko Scientific Society, Inc. is an organization of scholars from diverse disciplines who are dedicated primarily, but not exclusively, to the advancement of Ukrainian studies. Founded in 1873 in the city of Lviv, Ukraine, it is the oldest Ukrainian academy of arts and sciences, whose activities have been the mainstay of Ukrainian cultural life for over a century. Disbanded by the Soviet regime in 1939, it was reestablished in the U.S. in 1947. Its headquarters is located at 63 Fourth Avenue, New York City and houses the administrative offices, a lecture hall, a specialized library and archives. The Society has chapters in Boston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit and Pittsburgh. It promotes scholarship and higher education in humanities and sciences through scholarly research, conferences, publications, library resources and community outreach, particularly through its weekly programs open to the public. The Society awards research grants to scholars and fellowships to graduate students as well as post-docs in Ukrainian studies. The Society is an affiliate member of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), the Association for the Study of Nationalities, and participates in a consortium of Greater New York scholarly institutions involved with Ukrainian studies.Since its organization in 1947, the Shevchenko Scientific Society, Inc. has been supported in total by generous gifts and bequests of its members and supporters. The Society does not receive any governmental support. Currently, the Society maintains an active program for solicitation of funds from its members, the community and the general public. The program includes an annual holiday appeal through direct mail solicitation and newspaper advertisements and biannual publication of the Society's bulletin which highlights its recent activities and activities of its members. Board members and key personnel inform and appeal to potential sponsors and contributors by hosting a series of events, including: lectures, conferences, round table and panel discussions, and book launches that promote the activity of the Society.The Society is governed by its bylaws. The current membership is comprised of 472 scholars, students, and honorary members who come from all regions of the U.S. and represent a wide range of intellect and interests. Members are admitted to the Society by a vote of Board members, based on academic qualifications. There are several levels of memberships with a corresponding dues structure. Each membership is based on academic activity level and provides different levels of privileges, such as discounts on books, access to materials, voting in general meetings, etc. Regular membership dues are $60 annually, while student dues are $10 annually. By keeping the dues at these levels, membership is available to a broad cross section of the interested public. The Board of Directors is comprised of 27 members who are elected by its membership from a broad spectrum of scientific and academic interests including but not limited to: medicine and biology, law, information technology, mathematics and sciences, the arts, history and philosophy, social sciences, philology, and musicology. This intellectually and geographically diverse membership is ideally suited to direct the Society's affairs and administer its varied research and publication programs, scholarly meetings, library, and public outreach. The Shevchenko Scientific Society, Inc. awards research grants and stipends to scholars as well as fellowships and post-docs in Ukrainian studies to graduate students, whose projects will make a significant contribution to the knowledge in the humanities and social sciences focusing upon Ukrainian topics. The Stipend Committee of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, Inc. considers the significance of the proposed project, the duality of the applicant's work, the conception and description of the project as well as the likelihood that it will be accomplished. Race, gender, religion and ethnicity have no bearing upon the selection procedure. The Society maintains a library that holds more than 35,000 books in Ukrainian, English and other languages as well as an online catalog which is available at www.shevchenko.org. The librarys holdings include publications of the society, scholarly and cultural works of its membership, and books. It is used by students and researchers affiliated with academic departments in New York City and tri-state universities. The library provides secondary, undergraduate, and graduate degree students with materials for their education in areas of interest to the Ukrainian heritage, history, culture, and Ukrainian-American experience. The librarys outstanding reputation in East European and Ukrainian studies attracts readers from around the world. The Society preserves individual and organizational archives relating to the interests of its membership, which is constituted mainly of academic and scholars of different kinds. Of particular interest to the membership is scholarly and cultural development of the Ukrainian-American community in New York City and the tri-state area. A listing of archival holdings is also available on www.shevchenko.org, and upon request, archives are made available for researchers.The Society provides weekly public lectures during the academic year on a diversity of topics representing the expertise of the speakers who may be members of the Society, visiting scholars, authors, artists or other guests who present the results of their work to the general public. The lectures are advertised in the Ukrainian and English language press and on the website, and are open to all. Admission fees are by donation, or are generally nominal. The lecture hall and other facilities of the Society are also made available to the general public for neighborhood educational programs, poetry readings and occasional concerts. The Society's mission has always been the advancement of knowledge in the sciences and humanities, especially those relating to Ukraine. No political preference, economic position, ethnic background or social standing has been regarded as relevant in determining the Society's activities that are to benefit the public. The Society has always recognized the importance of this idea and is intent on conducting its future programs on the basis of this principle. |
