DONOR DESIGNATIONS TO OTHER NON-PROFIT AGENCIES OR UNITED WAYS THROUGHOUT THE ANNUAL UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN, DONORS MAY CHOOSE TO DIRECTLY DESIGNATE A PORTION OF THEIR GIFTS TO A SPECIFIC AGENCY OR UNITED WAY IN ANOTHER COMMUNITY. ELIGIBILITY FOR DESIGNATIONS REQUIRES THAT AGENCIES ARE TAX EXEMPT UNDER IRS CODE 501(C)(3), AND HAVE A HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICE FOCUS. IN 2015, DONOR DESIGNATED GIFTS RESULTED IN 1.4 MILLION ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR THESE AGENCIES AND UNITED WAYS. RAISE YOUR HAND (RYH) RAISE YOUR HAND (RYH) IS A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT BETWEEN UNITED WAY OF WILLIAMSON COUNTY (UWWC), FRANKLIN SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT (FSSD) AND WILLIAMSON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT (WCS) THAT OFFERS TUTORING TO 2ND, 3RD AND 4TH GRADE STUDENTS SCORING IN THE BOTTOM 40% IN READING AND MATH. TUTORING, SNACKS AND TRANSPORTATION ARE PROVIDED. IN WILLIAMSON COUNTY PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS TO AN AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM. UWWC RECRUITS VOLUNTEERS, PAYS THE TEACHER AND TRANSPORTATION COST, PROVIDES THE SNACKS ALL THROUGH GRANT FUNDING. THIS SCHOOL YEAR THERE WERE 346 STUDENTS, WHICH INCLUDED 40 NEW 2ND GRADE STUDENTS, THERE WERE 72 VOLUNTEERS AND 37 TEACHERS. 88% OF THE STUDENTS IMPROVED THEIR READING SKILLS AND 93% IMPROVED THEIR MATH SKILLS. UNITED WAY OF WILLIAMSON COUNTY FREE TAX PREP (VITA) UNITED WAY SUPPORTED 4 TRADITIONAL TAX PREP SITES AND 3 MOBILE SITES. THESE TAX SITES PROVIDE FREE TAX RETURN PREPARATION FOR FAMILIES MAKING 62,000 AND BELOW. THERE ARE SPANISH LANGUAGE VOLUNTEERS TO HELP FAMILIES WITH LIMITED ENGLISH PROFICIENCY. THIS TAX SEASON THERE WERE 51 VOLUNTEERS, 1263 TOTAL TAX RETURNS AND OVER 1,204,826 PUT BACK INTO THE HANDS OF HARDWORKING FAMILIES. WILLIAMSON COUNTY ANTI-DRUG COALITION (WCADC) WCADC IS WORKING TO MAKE PARENTS AWARE OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE AMONG YOUTH, AGES 14-18. WCADC WORKS WITH A COALITION OF PARTNERS FROM GOVERNMENT, EDUCATION, COURT SYSTEM, LOCAL AGENCIES, HEALTH PROVIDERS, CITIZEN ACTIVISTS AND VOLUNTEERS TO IMPLEMENT EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES THAT PROVIDE AWARENESS, INFORM RESIDENTS AND PREVENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE. WCADC INITIATED A DRUG TAKE BACK DAY IN COOPERATION WITH LOCAL GOVERNMENTS. THESE NOW HAPPEN TWICE EACH YEAR. WCADC WORKS IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM TO PROMOTE PROM PROMISE, WORKS WITH HIGH SCHOOL AUDIO VISUAL CLASSES TO PRODUCE PSA VIDEOS ABOUT THE DANGERS OF DRUG ABUSE AND HAS SUCCEEDED THIS YEAR WITH PLACING A PERMANENT DRUG DROP BOX AT THE NOLENSVILLE, TENNESSEE POLICE DEPARTMENT. THIS YEAR WCADC HAS ALSO HOSTED LUNCH-N-LEARN EVENTS AT WHICH HOME LOCK BOXES FOR PRESCRIPTION DRUGS WERE GIVEN AWAY. THESE BOXES ARE SMALL AND THEY CAN BE BOLTED DOWN OR PLACED IN ANY SECURE AREA. THIS PREVENTION IS GOOD FOR FAMILIES WITH SMALL CHILDREN, KIDS GOING TO COLLEGE, OR FOR THE MOST TARGETED DEMOGRAPHIC, THE ELDERLY. WHEN THOSE ABUSING PRESCRIPTION DRUGS ARE ASKED, WHERE THEY GET THEIR DRUGS, THE BIGGEST MAJORITY SAY FROM ELDERLY FAMILY MEMBERS. UNITED WAY'S VOLUNTEER CENTER VOLUNTEER WILLIAMSON COUNTY WAS ESTABLISHED TO CONNECT VOLUNTEERS WITH MEANINGFUL AND FULFILLING COMMUNITY PROJECTS. IN ADDITION TO COORDINATING THE ANNUAL DAYS OF CARING FOR EMPLOYEES OF LOCAL CORPORATE PARTNERS AND A COUNTY-WIDE DAY OF ACTION, VOLUNTEER WILLIAMSON COUNTY HOSTS COLLEGE STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY FOR ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK. THESE STUDENTS PAY FOR THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION PLUS PAY A FEE TO PARTICIPATE. THE VOLUNTEER CENTER ALSO COORDINATES THE GOVERNOR'S VOLUNTEER STARS AWARD FOR WILLIAMSON COUNTY. THIS YEAR A SECOND COMMUNITY GARDEN WAS ESTABLISHED PLUS 9 RAISED BEDS WERE BUILT, PLACED AND PLANTED AT SEVERAL SUBSIDIZED APARTMENT COMMUNITIES. A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE WILLIAMSON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT CREATED THE TNACHIEVES DAY FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS. THIS DAY ALLOWED STUDENTS TO DO JOB SHADOWING, DO COLLEGE TOURS OR COMPLETE THE 8 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE REQUIRED FOR THE TNACHIEVES SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. |
