SUMMARY OF DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES PART IX-A THE KNOWLES SCIENCE TEACHING FOUNDATION (KSTF) INVESTS IN DEVELOPING A STABLE CORE OF EXPERT SCIENCE AND MATH TEACHERS AND TEACHER LEADERS IN A WIDE VARIETY OF U.S. HIGH SCHOOLS. IN DOING SO, THE FOUNDATION SEEKS TO STRENGTHEN THE TEACHING PROFESSION, THEREBY IMPROVING MATH AND SCIENCE EDUCATION IN THE UNITED STATES. KSTF IS A PRIVATE, OPERATING FOUNDATION, FUNDED BY AN ENDOWMENT FROM HARRY AND JANET KNOWLES IN 1999. THE STRUCTURE OF A FULLY-FUNDED, OPERATING FOUNDATION HAS ALLOWED KSTF TO COMMIT LONG-TERM TO THE MISSION OF BUILDINGA STABLE CORE OF TEACHERS AND TEACHER LEADERS THROUGH THREE, INTERCONNECTED PROGRAMS: TEACHING FELLOWS, SENIOR FELLOWS, AND RESEARCH AND EVALUATION.THE CORNERSTONE PROGRAM OF KSTF IS THE TEACHING FELLOWS PROGRAM. THIS PROGRAM ADDRESSES THE RECRUITMENT, TRAINING, AND RETENTION OF HIGH-ABILITY STEM TEACHER CANDIDATES THROUGH A COMPREHENSIVE FIVE-YEAR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM.EACH YEAR, KSTF AWARDS APPROXIMATELY 36 FELLOWSHIPS TO EARLY CAREER MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHERS. THE SENIOR FELLOWS PROGRAM BUILDS UPON THE CORE COMMITMENTS AND WORK OF THE TEACHING FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. AFTER COMPLETING THE TEACHING FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM, SENIOR FELLOWS CONTINUE TO DEVELOP AS TEACHER LEADERS AND PARTICIPATE AS ACTIVE MEMBERS OF THE KSTF COMMUNITY.THE RESEARCH AND EVALUATION PROGRAM OFFERS SUPPORT FOR INNOVATIVE AND RIGOROUS STUDIES OF TEACHER DEVELOPMENT, TEACHING, LEARNING, AND LEADERSHIP ACROSS THE KSTF ORGANIZATION. SPECIFICALLY, THIS PROGRAM FOCUSES ON COLLABORATIVE STUDIES OF PRACTICE BY KSTF TEACHING FELLOWS, SENIOR FELLOWS, AND STAFF IN ORDER TO DEEPEN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF PRACTITIONER INQUIRY, ITS INFLUENCE ON TEACHER AND STUDENT LEARNING, AND IMPACT ON TEACHER LEADERSHIP AND PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY.BECAUSE THESE PROGRAMS HAVE NOT BEEN CONSTRAINED BY THE FINITE LIFE-CYCLE OF A TYPICAL GRANT, KSTF HAS BEEN ABLE TO CONTINUALLY REFINE AND IMPROVE ITS PROGRAMS THROUGH ONGOING DEVELOPMENT AND ITERATIVE IMPROVEMENT CYCLES. AS A RESULT, KSTF MAKES FOUR KEY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A STABLE CORE TO THE TEACHING PROFESSION:A CADRE OF EXCEPTIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE AND MATH TEACHERS; THE DEVELOPMENT OF LEADERSHIP CAPACITY AMONG THOSE TEACHERS; THE DEVELOPMENT OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT TEACHING AND LEARNING, GIVING PRIMACY TO KNOWLEDGE GENERATED BY TEACHERSOF AND FOR THEIR OWN PRACTICE; AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NETWORKED IMPROVEMENT COMMUNITY NECESSARY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS EDUCATION.
BYLAWS CHANGES PART VII-A QUESTION #3 THE FOUNDATION'S BYLAWS WERE AMENDED AND RESTATED AS OF MAY 15, 2015. DUE TO CONSTRAINTS RELATED TO ATTACHMENTS FOR E-FILED RETURNS, A COPY OF THE UPDATED DOCUMENT HAS BEEN SEPARATELY MAILED TO THE IRS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FORM 990-PF INSTRUCTIONS.
