HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICESMore than $3 million was raised in a single day for 437 local nonprofits during this second year of the Great Give Palm Beach and Martin Counties. The 24-hour online fundraising event held May 5-6 was hosted by the Community Foundation, United Way of Palm Beach County and United Way of Martin County. The final total raised in this event was over $3 million and included the money raised through online donations that day, as well as additional funds raised by the nonprofits through match challenges and checks that were not contributed via the website. It also included over $550,000 in bonus funds raised by the Community Foundation that was divided and awarded to every participating nonprofit based on the total they raised. Community foundations across the country participated in the giving event in partnership with Give Local America, and collectively raised $68 million in one day. The Community Foundation did its final year of grantmaking in a three year affordable housing program. Projects included three Habitat for Humanity organizations. Their combined focus was the veterans' community, targeted impoverished areas and bringing together communities to refurbish their neighborhoods. Other programming included services that support clients work toward and purchase their own homes. The focus was to move individuals and families from homelessness or temporary housing to the stability of their own for the future. The Community Foundation's grantmaking provided needed support services that other traditional funders will not cover. The Urban League of Palm Beach County was awarded $108,333 to provide services to help clients obtain or maintain homeownership through foreclosure intervention counseling, financial counseling, first time homebuyer workshops and housing counseling. Gulfstream Goodwill Industries will provide services to individuals in our community who find it hardest to move into an independent living situation - those with special needs. A grant of $146,443 will enable Goodwill to provide case management services to their clients that will move into an independent living opportunity in Lake Worth.

EDUCATIONThe Community Foundation was once again a fiscal partner with several other funding entities for the Palm Beach County STEM Initiative. This was the 3rd and final year of this project which supported the development of teachers ready to move STEM education in the classroom to a higher level. The professional development provided intended to position School District Palm Beach County as national leader in recruitment, development and retention of master teachers in STEM subject areas by improving STEM coaching. The Community Foundation provided a total of almost $1 million dollars to this program. Additionally, the Community Foundation provided support directly in the classroom through a grant to support the creation of a medical sciences academy in Boynton Beach Community High School. This program will target students who may not have the opportunity to fully explore potential careers in the medical field. Students who complete the program will be ready for certain jobs or to move on to higher level education.
4c (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 495,461 including grants of $ 465,950 ) (Revenue $   )
ARTS AND CULTUREThe main focus for the Community Foundation's arts and culture funding was to support creative people and effective institutions committed to building a more just, verdant and peaceful world. Funding in the amount of $117,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County was awarded to develop artist-driven art in the Glades area. This program allows them to create a formal arts program at their seven Glades area clubs. A grant in the amount of $165,000 to the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County was awarded for their Creative Corridor Initiative in Lake Worth. This provides the resources necessary to create public/private partnerships that will create a plan guiding the restoration of the vibrant downtown Lake Worth corridor. The planning phase of this project will address rehabilitation of vacant storefronts into arts-related businesses, attract and recruit artists to downtown Lake Worth's Arts and Design District and engage the broader community in arts and culture in order to strengthen the economy. A grant made to the Blue Planet International Explorers' Bazaar and Writer's Room in the amount of $60,000 will fund creative connections between Palm Beach County school children and those in other countries. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMThis year approximately 400 students completed an application for our scholarship program. With the help of local volunteers we granted 100 scholarships to deserving students in our community. These students received awards from $1,000 to $60,000 to use towards their college of choice. We have students attending all major Florida universities as well as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard College, and Brown University. The Community Foundation is one of the largest providers of scholarship grants in Palm Beach and Martin counties. We support a wide range of students based on criteria of our nearly 100 scholarship funds. Scholarship funds are often established to honor or memorialize a loved one. Each year fund holders are informed of the recipients and receive thank you letters from the students, allowing the fund holder to be part of the students' college journey. Since 1983, over $9 million in scholarships have been awarded to nearly 1,900 students.
(Code:   ) (Expenses $ 266,146 including grants of $ 250,294 ) (Revenue $   )
ENVIRONMENTImproving water quality through education and advocacy was a central theme in the environmental funding provided through the Community Foundation. Through a grant of $149,631 to Bush Wildlife Sanctuary, an environmental educator will conduct guided, interactive, educational tours on a large water reclamation site and nature preserve in Jupiter. They will be able to educate visitors about the need for water reclamation and conservation and on minimizing the impacts of human habitation on the diverse and critical Loxahatchee River Watershed. The Ocean Research and Conservation Association (ORCA) received funds to address the issue of pollutants in the Loxahatchee River, which may be linked to dying seagrass in the marine habitat. They will utilize the Fast Assessment of Sediment Toxicity (FAST) program to identify pollution areas and create layered habitat quality maps. A grant of $29,050 was awarded to the Environmental Studies Council to create an interactive estuary exhibit in the Environmental Studies Center's Wet Lab. This display will demonstrate the important of how mangroves help sustain a balanced ecosystem.
