Public Education: We are monitoring what the presidential candidates are saying about hunger and poverty, and we continue to reach out to the candidates and journalists. We are also asking Circle of Protection church leaders and educational institutions to encourage people to watch and discuss the videos.In 2015 we stepped up communications to our members, activists, our growing online community, journalists, and the general public. We used digital communications strategically and significantly extended our reach and results. We launched the new Bread website, www.bread.org, in July 2015 and continued to make improvements throughout the year. We coupled the results of a survey of users and non-users with the latest practices in web design and developed a completely different website. The website is a welcome portal for people learning about Bread and a resource for those familiar with us Bread get the information and tools they need. The goal is to provide information that the public wants and needs. It uses the most current readability and usability standards, and is better viewed on a smart phone or tablet than the previous site.

Outreach and Advocacy: Bread for the World's 2015 Offering of Letters rallied strong, bipartisan support in Congress for strengthening access to domestic child nutrition programs, especially during summer months. Bread focused on building cosponsors for the Summer Meals Act and the Stop Child Summer Hunger Act.After two Offering of Letters campaigns and six years of persistent advocacy, Congress passed a tax deal that made permanent the 2009 improvements to the EITC and the CTC. With this legislation, low-income working families are now assured additional marriage penalty relief with the EITC, a larger EITC for families with three or more children, and the ability to count earnings below $13,000 towards the CTC. This will prevent 16 million people from falling into or deeper into poverty, including 8 million children. Overall, the EITC and CTC improvements will help 50 million Americans, including 25 million children.Food aid reform remains a contentious issue, and we continue to fight strong opposition. In the final days of 2015, for the second year, Bread successfully blocked passage of a provision to increase the cargo preference for shippers. If passed, the subsidy for a few shipping companies would have increased by $75 million, and 2 million impoverished people would not have received food aid in 2016.In 2015, Congress authorized the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). In its lifetime, AGOA has directly created 350,000 jobs and indirectly created another one million jobs in Africa. Bread for the World has consistently advocated for AGOA since 1998. The new reauthorization is for 10 years, which will give more incentive for businesses to invest in export opportunities. The Global Food Security Act (GFSA) (Feed the Future), House bill (H.R.1567), passed unanimously out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee in April 2015. Bread activists and staff focused on getting co-sponsors to the House Bill to get it moving. H.R.1567 now has 117 co-sponsors, exceeding our goal of 100. We know that Bread activists secured at least 80 co-sponsors.A clear indication of Bread's shift from print to digital publications is the doubling of infographics and memes we produced in 2015 - totaling 112, compared to 46 in 2014. These are used in various ways - the online newsletter, the website, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as in several advertising platforms.

Public Policy: Bread for the World is working with coalition partners to urge President Obama attend the Second Nutrition for Growth High Level Event in Rio in August. We are advocating that the U.S. administration to make robust funding and policy commitments at this important global moment for nutrition.Bread for the World and the Alliance to End Hunger convened what became the Vote to End Hunger Coalition. We launched Vote to End Hunger at the Iowa Hunger Summit in October (attended by about 500 Iowans) and joined the Iowa Catholic Conference in sponsoring a Vote to End Hunger Rally in November (attended by another 200 people).Bread hosted the Interfaith Religious Leaders Summit - End Hunger by 2030 dinner on the eve of Pope Francis' arrival. An influential and diverse group of 95 top religious leaders committed themselves to work for the end of hunger by 2030 and, toward that end, for a shift in U.S. national priorities by 2017. The next day we held a press conference where eight leaders from each of the nation's major religious families released the Interfaith Religious Leaders Pledge to End Hunger by 2030.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6 Membership includes individuals or organizations who make an annual financial contribution to BREAD or who otherwise distinguish themselves through their service to BREAD.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7a Each member is entitled to vote for each vacant Board of Director position that is to be filled by voting members. Members can cast their ballots by mail or electronic means. Five hundred member votes constitute a quorum for a valid election. This is the sole voting privilege enjoyed by members.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11 The Controller and Director of Finance compare the Federal Form 990 to the audited financial statements. All variances are verified against schedules to determine that they are correct.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12c On an annual basis, members of the Board of Directors sign a new conflict of interest statement. Any possible conflicts listed are reviewed by the Vice President of Finance and Administration to determine if they truly reflect a conflict. If so, the statements are discussed with the Audit Committee. If the Committee believes the conflict is real, the Board Member is asked to either resign from the Board or to stop the activity that is creating the conflict.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15 Periodically, the human resource department receives general market data from an outside compensation consultant to determine if salaries are in line with organizations of similar mission and/or size. A more thorough market analysis of compensation of specific positions is provided by an outside compensation consultant on an ad hoc basis. The President's salary is reviewed by the Board of Directors on a periodic basis. This is discussed and documented in the executive session. These notes are kept by the Board Secretary and are not open to the public. However, the Board does seek the same independent comparison data for the President that BREAD seeks for all other staff, including other members of the Executive Team.
