Explanation
Pt VI, Line 6
The organization has one class of members with the same rights: eligible to participate in the nomination process for election of the board members and have an opportunity to provide input on program priorities for the Network as requested by the Board.
Pt VI, Line 7b
Each member in good standing shall be eligible to participate in the nomination process for election of the board members by serving on the Board Nomination Committee (up to two can serve on the committee each year) and have an opportunity to provide input on program priorities for the Network as requested by the Board.
Pt VI, Line 11b
Form 990 is prepared by an independent accountant and reviewed in detail by the organization's top management. The reviewed Form 990 is then forwarded to the Board of Directors for final approval prior to filing.
Pt VI, Line 12c
All board members sign a statement of Board Roles and Responsibilities, which includes confirming they will not enter into an activity that would be deemed a conflict of interest. The Board Secretary reviews the annually signed conflict of interest statements. If a conflict of interest does exist, the interested person shall leave the governing board or committee meeting while the determination on the transaction of interest is discussed and voted upon.
Pt VI, Line 15a
The Executive Director's compensation included a review and approval by the Independent Board and contemporaneous substantiation of the deliberation and decision. In March 2015 the Board passed a compensation policy which uses comparability data every third year for the Executive Director's compensation. Tax year 2015 marked the third year for the Executive Director.
Pt VI, Line 15b
Determination of the Associate Director's compensation included review and approval by the Executive Director and contemporaneous substantiation and decision.
Pt VI, Line 19
The US Human Rights Network makes its governing documents and financial statements available to the public upon request.
Pt III, Line 2
USHRN held its biannual national conference in 2015. The conference brought together over 150 groups from around the United States working on various human rights concerns to raise awareness on a range of social issues and to build the human rights capacity of different community leaders.
Other
Form 990, Part III, Line 4 The USHRN National Biannual Conference was held un Austin, TX in 2015. The conference brought together over 150 groups to raise awareness on a range of social issues, and to build the human capacity of different community leaders. The conference participants collaborated on how to promote immigrant rights and to combat excessive use of force by law enforcement officers. The conference also successfully introduced participants to skills building workshops, as well as raised awareness about issues related to violence against transgender persons, economic and social rights, cultural rights, and black girls living in poverty in the rural south. The Human Rights at Home (HuRAH) coordination resulted in a strengthened accountability structure for human rights compliance within the federal government. As a result of the HuRAH coordination, the participation and engagement of the U.S. Government in consulting civil society to inform human rights implementation has deepened. The U.S. Department of State established six inter-agency working groups to implement human rights recommendations made to the United States by human rights bodies with representation from a range of federal agencies as well as state representatives. Agencies represented included the Department of Justice, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Labor, the Department of the Interior, in addition to the Department of State. The Universal Periodic Review (UPR), which is a peer review of the member states of the United Nations, took place in May 2015. USHRN took a delegation of over 40 leaders to the United Nations for the UPR, and submitted a summary of 34 human rights reports to inform the process.
Pt XII, Line 2c
