Facts And Circumstances Test
Every Member of Watkins Mill Association's Board is passionate about Watkins Mill Historic Site and preserving its living history. Trustees (32 in all) were chosen for active community involvement in ten area cities plus Colorado and Virginia. Their professional talents range from bankers, attorneys, strategic planners and corporate executives to educators, journalists, architects, artists and master gardeners. Six are also members of the historic Watkins family. Clay County, Missouri's rolling hills are home to Watkins Mill, the last textile mill in North America with original machinery intact. Visiting Watkins Woolen Mill Historic Site is to step into the 19th Century. Many buildings that Waltus Watkins built over half a century ago -- including the family Home and three-story Woolen Mill -- are preserved to provide visitors a sense of 1870s life. College professors and K-12 teachers include Watkins Mill in curricula for its importance in the Industrial Revolution and Civil War. Founded in 1958, the Watkins Mill Association is true to its mission: Proactively support the preservation and living history of Watkins Woolen Mill Historic Site. In the early 1960s, the Association took bold steps to make Watkins Mill a State Park. The State Parks Department agreed to accept the property as a donation if the acreage was larger. The Association secured options from adjacent landowners for additional acreage and sought money to buy it. The Clay County Historical Society went door-to-door, explaining the benefits of a State Park to the entire County -- and voters approved the bonds. The County purchased the lands and buildings, then donated them to the State for $1. On January 1, 1964, Watkins Mill became a State Historic Site with the added protection of being in a State Park. The Association was the driving force in Watkins Mill's restoration and recognition by: National Historical Landmarks, United States Department of the Interior; National Register of Historic Places; Clay County Historic Landmarks; National Mechanical Engineering Landmarks. The Association turned the Historic Site into a destination, restoring Watkins' Home, Mill, Chapel, one-room Schoolhouse and farm buildings. It worked. Watkins Mill is now the region's premier historic attraction. In 2015, it attracted 14,772 Historic Site Visitors and 473,353 Park Visitors. Watkins Mill Association is the only "friends" organization devoted to Watkins Mill Historic Site, its preservation and continued relevance. We provide stewardship and a safety net when State funds fall short. Our direct support for Historic Site priorities includes historic buildings' restoration and maintenance, living history programs, Volunteer programs, education programs, outdoor events targeting healthy lifestyles, marketing and promotion. Shrinking State budgets increase economic pressure on all public services, including Watkins Mill. The Association's 2015 Public Support calculation is 30.58%, just shy of 33.33% -- and a notable improvement over 2014. We are moving solidly in the right direction. Strategically, we are creating long-term sustainability for Watkins Mill by increasing Visitors, Volunteers and dues-paying Members. Over five years, we show growth in these significant areas: ** 78.2% Increase in Memberships and Individual Donations ** 16.2% Increase in Volunteers ** 174.6% Increase in Volunteer Hours ** 121.8% Increase in Income from Visitors (Programs, Special Events, Book Sales, etc.) We are becoming a stronger active citizen in our local communities, providing more reasons to become involved in Mill activities. Trustees now represent the Association in four area Chambers of Commerce. Our part-time Marketing Coordinator and Event Planner are both well connected in the community. The community is responding favorably, as evidenced by showcasing Watkins Mill in new venues and as corporate sponsors for our special events. Trained Volunteers (totaling 115 in 2015) expand Historic Site learning tours, workshops and events, replacing two full-time Park Staff previously cut from State budgets. Another important key is increasing targeted communications, which we leverage and monitor with online resources (website, Facebook, Twitter, etc.). As individuals' personal involvement increases, new Memberships follow, generating new revenue and loyal interest. The Association Board is now strengthening our organizational structure -- all focused on sustaining the Historic Site: 1. Individual Board Members lead important Historic Site activities. They conduct Visitor and group tours, electronically preserve historic archives, and tend the Watkins heirloom garden. 2. Trustees who represent us in four area Chambers of Commerce manage our Marketing Committee's community outreach with the Marketing Coordinator. 3. We convened a Development Committee of Board and Staff to clarify needs and opportunities, recommend strategic priorities, and implement action plans. Thousands of people enjoy the cultural treasure that is Watkins Mill every year. Data shows they come from all over Missouri, as well as many zip codes in Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Arkansas and beyond. Watkins Mill Historic Site and State Park are open to everyone, especially attracting those with interests in the Industrial Revolution, Civil War, living history, farming, heirloom gardening, animal husbandry, engineering, textile industry, arts, crafts, nature and healthy outdoor activities. There are no barriers, real or implied, in this casual setting. Visitors of all ages and income levels appreciate the entertainment value and learn based on their own interests. Historic Site Visitors appreciate similar experiences. The Association's website and social media resources are used to attract new Visitors, then maintain contact after each visit. On an operational level, the Association now turns its focus to growing the Historic Site's partnerships and educational programs. Together, we will build a stronger more diverse community devoted to Watkins Mill's long-term historic viability and relevance to new generations.
