RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION: IN 2015, RESEARCH SCIENTISTS AT THE AQUARIUM UTILIZED OVER $3.6 MILLION IN GRANTS TO DO APPLIED AND BASIC RESEARCH WORK ON CRITICAL MARINE SPECIES AND HABITATS. LED BY SCOTT KRAUS, THE AQUARIUM CONDUCTED AN ANALYSIS TO ASSESS THE SCIENTIFIC AND CONSERVATION VALUE OF A PROPOSED MARINE NATIONAL MONUMENT IN FEDERAL WATERS OFF THE NORTHEAST UNITED STATES, INCLUDING THE PRISTINE HABITATS SUCH AS THE CASHES LEDGE COMPLEX IN THE CENTRAL GULF OF MAINE. THANKS TO FUNDING IN PART FROM THE MARINE CONSERVATION ACTION FUND ("MCAF"), KERSTIN FORSBERG OF PLANETA OCEANO (AND MCAF GRANTEE AND FELLOW) WAS ABLE TO DOCUMENT FISHERIES IMPACTS ON MANTA RAYS IN PERUVIAN WATERS, DIRECTLY LEADING TO THEIR PROTECTION.RESEARCHERS ELIZABETH BURGESS AND ROZ ROLLAND WERE ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY PREDICT THE PREGNANCY OF A NORTH ATLANTIC RIGHT WHALE USING A SAMPLE COLLECTED FROM THE WHALE'S BLOW EXHALATION. THE BIRTH OF THE CALF WAS CONFIRMED THROUGH THE NORTH AMERICAN RIGHT WHALE SIGHTINGS DATABASE AND CATALOGUE THAT IS MAINTAINED BY THE AQUARIUM. RESEARCHER ROZ ROLLAND AND FOUR ADDITIONAL AQUARIUM COLLEAGUES PUBLISHED A LANDMARK PAPER IN MARINE ECOLOGY PROGRESS SERIES ON MODELING HEALTH OF RIGHT WHALES OVER THREE DECADES. RESULTS SHOW THAT HEALTH IN THIS HIGHLY ENDANGERED POPULATION IS DECLINING AND DEMONSTRATING THE LINK BETWEEN HEALTH AND REPRODUCTION. THE AQUARIUM'S SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD PROGRAMS WELCOMED FISHERMEN, SEAFOOD BUSINESSES AND COLLEAGUES TO AN EVENT TO CELEBRATE THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY AND THE NEED TO DEFEND THE MAGNUSON-STEVENS FISHERY CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT ACT, WHICH SAFEGUARDS THE MANAGEMENT AND REBUILDING OF ECOLOGICALLY AND COMMERCIALLY IMPORTANT FISH SPECIES AROUND THE UNITED STATES.RIGHT WHALE RESEARCHER HEATHER PETTIS RECEIVED A THREE-YEAR GRANT TO CONTINUE THE EVALUATION AND TRACKING OF INJURY IMPACTS ON RIGHT WHALE HEALTH. THESE EFFORTS INFORM BOTH RESEARCHERS AND MANAGERS, PARTICULARLY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANNUAL ASSESSMENTS OF HUMAN INDUCED SERIOUS INJURY AND MORTALITY ON THE POPULATION.RESEARCHERS MICHAEL TLUSTY AND BROOKE WIKGREN RECEIVED FUNDING FROM THE NOAA SEA GRANT PROGRAM TO DEVISE A SPATIALLY DEFINED TOOL FOR MARINE AQUACULTURE SITING AND PERMITTING.LED BY AQUARIUM AFFILIATED RESEARCHER SAL CERCHIO, THE MADAGASCAR OMURA'S WHALE PROJECT SAW A RECORD NUMBER OF SIGHTINGS OF MOTHER-CALF PAIRS, AND SEVERAL NOVEL OBSERVATIONS. THE WORK WAS PRESENTED AT THE 21ST BIENNIAL CONFERENCE ON THE BIOLOGY OF MARINE MAMMALS, AND FEATURED IN NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC NEWS, NPR'S LIVING LABS, AND SIGNIFICANT ADDITIONAL INTERNATIONAL MEDIA AND OUTREACH ATTENTION.RESEARCHER JOHN MANDELMAN AND COLLEAGUES PUBLISHED A KEY PAPER ON ATLANTIC COD IN THE ICES JOURNAL OF MARINE SCIENCE, RESULTS FROM WHICH ARE PRESENTLY BEING USED TO HELP DIRECT MANAGEMENT OF THIS OVERFISHED SPECIES IN THE GULF OF MAINE RECREATIONAL FISHERY. FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 11 THE FORM 990 IS PREPARED BY MANAGEMENT AND REVIEWED BY INDEPENDENT PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS. ONCE THE DOCUMENT IS CONSIDERED READY FOR REVIEW, COPIES (EXCLUDING SCHEDULE B) ARE DISTRIBUTED TO THE MEMBERS OF THE AUDIT COMMITTEE OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR TO A PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED MEETING TO REVIEW IT. SCHEDULE B IS NOT INCLUDED FOR REVIEW IN ORDER TO RESPECT DONOR CONFIDENTIALITY AS REQUESTED BY SEVERAL DONORS. IN ADDITION TO THE FORM 990, MANAGEMENT PREPARES AND DISTRIBUTES A SUMMARY OF KEY ELEMENTS CONTAINED IN THE FORM 990 TO FACILITATE THE REVIEW. A COPY OF FORM 990-T IS ALSO PROVIDED ALONG WITH A BREAKOUT OF THE VARIOUS BUSINESS ACTIVITIES THAT HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS GENERATING UNRELATED BUSINESS INCOME. DURING THE MEETING, MANAGEMENT LEADS THE COMMITTEE THROUGH THE SUMMARY DOCUMENT, PAUSING TO ADDRESS QUESTIONS AND FACILITATE DISCUSSION AS NECESSARY. THE TAX PROFESSIONAL FROM THE ORGANIZATION'S PUBLIC ACCOUNTING FIRM WHO REVIEWED THE DOCUMENT IS ALSO PRESENT AND PARTICIPATES IN THE REVIEW SESSION. MINUTES OF THE MEETING ARE PREPARED AND RETAINED AS A RECORD.
