CVV accomplishes this mission by placing these young adult volunteers as full-time staff members in agencies that provide services, resources, education, health care, housing, emergency assistance, and job training to those who are in need. The Volunteers live in an intentional faith community and participate in a structured program of experience, action and reflection on social justice issues and their work experiences. Since 1995, 294 volunteers have completed the program. In 2015-2016, the volunteers served approximately 33,500 hours, saving the agencies approximately $360,000. Testament of the CVV's program impact is best given by those volunteers whose lives have been changed by their work with those living in poverty. The following two stories are from volunteers who have been participants in our program(names have been changed to protect confidentiality). One of our volunteers, Natalie Davies, reflected early in the year on the meaning of being a Vincentian Volunteer. "It is only for your love alone that the poor will forgive you the bread you give to them." - St. Vincent de Paul Vincentian. It's a tricky word. To remember, to pronounce and to define. Last fall as I began a year with Colorado Vincentian Volunteers(CVV)I came in blind about what it meant to be Vincentian. All I knew was that it was tied to St. Vincent de Paul. But early on I started inching towards a better understanding of how the Vincentian way would become a deep part of my experience this year. I won't go into the story of St. Vincent de Paul, but I will share with you the pieces of the Vincentian belief that have touched me on my journey. Vincentians believe that you cannot evangelize the poor; rather, the poor evangelize you. I grew closer to my belief in God through service, through working with others who have less than I, or in the words of St. Vincent de Paul, the poor. They opened up my heart, and along with the opening of my heart, came the opening of my eyes. I began to see the world through more than one lens. My life experience is far different than theirs, but somehow I found a resounding connection: HUMANITY. There is one other aspect of the Vincentians that I have gotten a glimpse into. They believe in charity that goes beyond the simple aspect of a good deed. It delves into building relationships. To being a human to another human. To acting in LOVE. These are two things I am often reminded of each day I go to work at the St. Francis Center. Being with individuals whose life experiences are unique, keeps me alive. They push me to channel the basic quality of humanity. It is not always a pathway filled with happiness and ease. There are challenges. There are days when I lean on my community for support. There are days when I doubt myself, or even this greater humanity that I write of. The world isn't perfect, but I'm making it my mission to find the beauty in the brokenness.During the year, CVV experienced the tragedy of a bicycle accident that claimed the life of one of our volunteers, Kaela Allton. The following is a reflection by one of her community members, Gianna Carleo. Few things in nature compare to the company of a winding river. There is a special posture of presence, an invitation to prayer, when one enters a river space. It is the paradox of rushing and calma simultaneous acceptance of great mystery paired with rooted contemplation. Every now and then, winter rivers freeze over but still have frigid waters rushing underway, creating a unique sound of frozen knocking. Spring waters take many different forms, and as summer comes, water raises the rivers higher, finds its way to the roots of our plants, is harsh at times and breathes coolness into the dry Colorado heat. It is a lovely experience to witness the movement and change of water. Through these changes I find perpetual invitations to prayer in communion with all beings of transformation. On October 14, 2015 another gentleness became a part of my prayer and has continued to transform me since. It left a heavy brand on my heart. A simple, four words: all will be well. It was the night of Kaelas accident. We had gathered for womens night and quickly moved to hopeful prayer, then panic as we rushed to the hospital after we received word of her accident. Lynne remained calm as she took my car keys, knowing I should not drive us. She handed me her cell phone and said to find the playlist, Tune Your Heart. Play the song, All Will Be Well. she said. Her voice filled the car, allowing me to find oxygen through my gasps. All will be well became my prayer as we made our way to the hospital. Tears rolled down my cheekswater-staining streams of what would soon be unexpected transformation for all of us. An autumn rain came the day after Kaela died. As Karli wrote in a poem, Even the skies were crying todaythey poured the sadness a human cannot withstand... the sun will return to rain your light upon us... to blanket us with your warmth. That water and rain overcame each of us that day and all the days after. It transformed us to know deep wells of our very selves and each other. We sat together a lot in that timeholding each other, crying or trying not to cry or praying and not knowing how. I tried to cling to all will be well, but it was difficult. But somehow, through some prayer, we bend and move like the strong weaving, melting, breaking waters and the sun warms us and all will be well. The last eight months have been filled with beautiful prayers of the communion of transformationa communion of CVV staff, alumni, supporters and the incredible volunteers of year 21 . It is my community at EarthLinks, my friends in Denver becoming friends with the CVV community, it is dance, stress, sadness and all the undeniable facets of self that together hold us. It is the water forms we take on and the prayers we pray. New people and experiences will soon transform us once again. Some of us may move far from Pearl Street, others might stay close. Still, I pray that all will be well. Regardless of the paths we take, may we be united in a prayer of breathunending gratitude to the unimaginable God whose creativity of peace brought us to communion with one another. And the sun warms us. And all will be well. Finally, a comment from one of our alum who wrote to us about her transition from CVV to the next step of her journey. Jenne Wiedemeier worked at Urban Peak and lived in the CVV community, completing her year in June of 2015. In February, 2016 she wrote:"I am realizing more and more how impactful my year of CVV was. Thank you, thank you a million times over. CVV changed my life in countless ways...CVV taught me how to think critically about what's happening in our world...I really miss the focus on simplicity and serving, on intentionally seeking Christ in others...I learned how to live in intentional community. I miss it terribly. It was not always easy, but it was always rewarding...CVV instilled in me a desire to be with those who are oppressed, abandoned, suffering, and I hope I can do something good as a social worker!...I want to continue meeting people where they're at and showing compassion. Maybe I can't always solve their problems but walking the journey with them might lessen a burden. Our trip to the border and CAD days, our R&D activities, along with my service at Urban Peak convinced me of this." |
