OVER 42,429 BOOKLETS WERE DISTRIBUTED THROUGH THE YEAR TO AREA HIGH SCHOOL TEEN PARENTING PROGRAMS, HOSPITAL PEDIATRIC DEPARTMENTS, PREGNANCY CENTERS, GOVERNMENTAL AND NON-GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES, TOGS FOR TOTS RECIPIENTS, AND DOCTOR'S OFFICES. A TOTAL OF 643 HOURS WERE CONTRIBUTED BY THE 9 VOLUNTEER MEMBERS. I'M IN CHARGE - THIS IS AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM PRESENTED TO 11,568 STUDENTS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE ELEMENTARY AGE CHILDREN SAFETY AND PERSONAL SKILLS THAT WILL PROMOTE SELF-CONFIDENCE AND KNOWLEDGE ON HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES AND OTHER CHILDREN LEFT IN THEIR CARE WHEN THEY ARE ALONE IN ANY SITUATION. ASSISTANCE LEAGUE SAN ANTONIO VOLUNTEERS WERE INVITED INTO ELEMENTARY CLASSROOMS FOR A 45 MINUTE PRESENTATION, USING ROLE PLAYING AND A 20 MINUTE CLASSROOM DVD ON AGE APPORPRIATE 'STRANGER DANGER' SAFETY SKILLS. AT THE END OF THE PRESENTATION EACH CHILD WAS GIVEN A WORKBOOK 'I'M IN CHARGE', COVERING THE SAME MATERIAL. MANY SKILLS WERE ADDRESSED SUCH AS RESPONDING TO A STRANGER, DRUGS AND GUNS, BULLYING, MATCHES AND FIRE SAFETY, USING 911, PHONE SAFETY, BEING STREET SMART, FIRST AID, AND INTERNET SAFETY. 26 VOLUNTEERS GAVE 1205 VOLUNTEER HOURS FOR THIS PROGRAM. CAPS - CAPS ART PROMOTES SMILES - THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES PERSONALLY DESIGNED BASEBALL CAPS FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN UNDERGOING CHEMOTHERAPY AS WELL AS OTHER CHRONICALLY ILL PATIENTS. 1,940 OF THESE UNIQUELY DECORATED CAPS WERE DELIVERED TO 5 HOSPITALS AND AGENCIES WHERE THEY WERE DISTRIBUTED TO THE PATIENTS. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES SMILES, A GESTURE OF CHEER, WARMTH AND LOVE TO PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES LETTING THEM KNOW THEY ARE CARED ABOUT BEYOND THE HOSPITAL CARE CENTERS. CAPS ALSO GIVES TO AN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY FOR SPECIAL BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS MONTHLY, WHERE IN SOME CASES, IT IS THE ONLY BIRTHDAY GIFT RECEIVED. THE ASSISTANCE LEAGUE VOLUNTEERS GAVE 2158 HOURS FOR THE CAPS PROGRAM. ENHANCED LEARNING AWARDS - GIVEN TO TITLE 1 SCHOOLS FOR STUDENT ENRICHMENT. THE ASSISTANCE LEAGUE OF SAN ANTONIO PURCHASE SUPPLEMENTAL TEACHING MATERIALS OR EQUIPMENT SELECTED BY THE TEACHERS. AWARDS ARE ALSO AVAILABLE FOR APPROVED ACTIVITIES THAT WILL ENHANCE THE STUDENTS' LEARNING EXPERIENCE. THESE AWARDS CAN BE USED FOR A SINGLE SCHOOL-WIDE PROJECT OR GIVEN TO ONE OR MORE TEACHERS, LIBRARIANS, NURSES OR COUNSELORS. THE TEACHING MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT OR ACTIVITY ARE NOT OTHERWISE COVERED BY THE SCHOOL'S BUDGET. THE SCHOOLS ARE CHOSEN BY THE ENHANCED LEARNING AWARDS COMMITTEE AND ARE NOTIFIED THAT THEY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR AN AWARD. TEACHERS FROM THESE SCHOOLS MUST THEN SUBMIT AN APPLICATION FOR THESE ONE-TIME AWARDS. LAST YEAR, 12 AWARDS ENRICHED THE LIVES OF 4,911 STUDENTS. 6 MEMBERS GAVE 189 VOLUNTEER HOURS TO THIS PROGRAM. ADOPT A RESIDENT PROGRAM - THIS PROGRAM WAS ESTABLISHED TO PROMOTE SELF- ESTEEM, COMPANIONSHIP, AND FRIENDSHIP TO 141 SENIOR CITIZENS. OUR PARTNER IN THIS ENDEAVOR IS MORNINGSIDE MINISTRIES CHANDLER INDEPENDENT AND ASSISTED LIVING, AND CHANDLER HEALTHCARE. WE RECEIVED AFFIRMATION THAT OUR PROGRAM, ADOPT A RESIDENT, IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE AS EVIDENCED BY OUR BEING AWARDED IN 2005 THE TEXAS VOLUNTEER PROGRAM OF THE YEAR - SERVING AS A GROUP. WE GIVE A BIRTHDAY PARTY EACH MONTH FOR THE CHANDLER ASSISTED LIVING. THIS PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY TO INTERACT WITH THE RESIDENTS ON A PERSONAL LEVEL. ONGOING ACTIVITIES INCLUDE WEEKLY BINGO GAMES. THERE ARE TWO ONE-TIME ACTIVITIES EACH YEAR. THE ANGEL TREE PROVIDES GIFTS TO THE RESIDENTS OF THE HEALTHCARE SETTING IN DECEMBER, AND OUR SPRING FASHION SHOW IS PRESENTED TO THE INDEPENDENT AND ASSISTED LIVING RESIDENTS. VOLUNTEER HOURS GIVEN WERE 1376. |
