| 2015-2016 COMMUNITY INITIATIVES REPORT | 2015-2016 COMMUNITY INITIATIVES REPORTCOMMUNITY IMPACT:In March, the United Way Board of Directors approved grants totaling $665,000 to support 20 health and human service programs. The Board of Directors also approved an additional $5,600 in discretionary grants to support an additonal six organizations bringing total support to other programs to $670,600.PROGRAMS:Womens Leadership Council Last year, the Womens Leadership Council funded two grants, totaling $4,500. The grants were to the Alice Paul Institute, for their Lead-A-Way program at Glassboro Intermediate School and Women in Technology workshops held at Rowan College. Organized in 2008, the Womens Leadership Council was created to provide women in Gloucester County with the opportunity to assist others in reaching their fullest potential and empowering women of all ages. Since its inception, the Council has funded 24 various grants for $74,525. Some of the programs for these grants include: financial literacy workshops, life skills training, college scholarships for courses and textbooks, program to improve the health and well-being of Gloucester County women at a residential/sub-acute detoxification treatment facility, leadership and anti-bullying skills for school-age girls along with workshops on various colleges and career paths including STEM, tutor training to assist in literacy, books for infants of new parents to instill reading at an early age, a learning trail in a park for preschoolers and much more.The Council members conduct collections at their fundraising and networking events and ask all attendees to bring donations. Items collected have been: professional wardrobe items and business shoes for women for interviews and reentering the work force, womens personal care products, holiday gifts and books for children in need and a food drive.Each year, the members help Mothers Matter to assemble Mothers Day gift bags that are distributed to Mothers in hospitals, agency clients, those in the military and going through cancer treatment.VetAbility - Supportive Services for Active Military, Veterans and their Families Since the program started in September of 2013, Abilities Solutions has managed this special initiative to provide support and to assist veterans in increasing self sufficiency by securing and maintaining gainful employment. Although the emphasis is on newly returning veterans, the program has served veterans from Korea to the present day conflicts. The program provides case management, assists in utilization of veterans benefits, vocational assessment, job seeking and job coaching. It is veteran driven with services delivered by veterans for veterans. As of April 2015, 289 veterans have been served, from all branches of the Armed Forces and greatly exceeds all expectations. The agency seeks veterans through a variety of venues and through referrals. NJ211The United Way provides funds for Gloucester Countys participation in NJ211, the 24/7 statewide information and referral service. The service helps individuals to identify and connect with providers of needed assistance. NJ211 call centers annually receive 7,500 calls for information and assistance from Gloucester County residents, the majority seeking housing and utility assistance, emergency food and shelter. This service can be accessed online at www.nj211.org REQUESTED GRANTS FROM FOUNDATIONS:AARP Tax AidLast year, UWGC/AARP Tax Assistance Program again received a grant from South Jersey Industries to expand the tax assistance program for low, moderate and fixed income households. The grant enabled the program to purchase additional equipment for all six of the AARP sites, which file online. AARP volunteers continued to staff the UWGC office site two days a week from early February through the deadline of April 15. For the 2014 tax filing year, in Gloucester County, a total of 2,398 federal and 2,347 state tax returns were filed, saving households an estimated $719,400 in filing fees. Since the inception of the program in 2009, the initiative has approximately saved County residents over $1,737,550 in fees. STEM Program - Girl Scouts of Central & Southern NJA request was granted by the PSEG Foundation for 4 five-hour sessions full of STEM hands-on activities, such as building a flying machine, demonstrations on various states of matter, using technology to geocache using GPS, testing the scientific method using various fluids with marshmallows and discovering the results, a robotics hardware and software platform utilizing LEGOs and computers. The girls had an opportunity to be engaged in experiences in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math which will help them recognize their interest and potential to pursue academic success in their future careers.Neighborhood Partner Abilities SolutionsA request was granted by the PSEG Foundation for the VetAbility Program. The mission is to improve employment outcomes for veterans. The program seeks to remove barriers to employment through employer education and individualized non-threatening, and non-governmental supports; respect the unique needs and strengths of the veterans; provide vocational assessment specifically designed to translate military experience into civilian employment and provide services which will result in successful veteran job placement and job retention.DRIVES: Gloucester County Cares About Hunger Food DriveThe tenth annual food drive was held in February and it was a huge success with 13,386 pounds of food collected. This year, 72 organizations participated. According to the agencys procurement manager, Feeding America uses a formula to convert poundage to number of meals served; based on this metric, the collection provided 114,146 meals. Since the drive started, 132,507 pounds of food have been donated to the Food Bank of South Jersey. This event was co-sponsored by the United Way of Gloucester County, the Gloucester County Human Service Advisory Council and the People for People Foundation.Also, several hundred pounds of pet food was collected for the Gloucester County Animal Shelter, which was be given to low and fixed income families to help feed their pets. Toys for TotsLast years annual toy collection, through United Way, had 35 organizations participating with 60 locations. These new, unwrapped toys, books and educational toys were distributed to children throughout the County to individual families and through area churches, schools and childrens organizations. The drive was operated again by the Semper Fidelis Detachment of the Pine Acres-based Marine Corps League.Back Pack CollectionUnited Way of Gloucester County partnered with the Center for Family Services for their Operation Backpack program. Nearly 100 backpacks and dozens of needed school items were collected from individuals and companies. The backpacks and supplies were distributed to children and teens of local families in need in Gloucester County to give them a good start for their school year.INITIATIVES:FamilyWizeThis national program is a free prescription savings card that is used by uninsured and underinsured individuals and families to receive a discount in the high cost of prescription medications. The goal is to have everyone receive the medicines that they need at a reduced cost. There is no paperwork to complete, no individual information is given and no financial or residential requirements are needed. The savings card is acceptable at all national stores where prescriptions are filled. In 2014, in Gloucester County, there were 2,618 claims resulting in a savings of $100,375.70.Pureland East-West Community ShuttleUnited Way of Gloucester County has been working with representatives from the County, Cross County Connection, South Jersey Transportation Authority and Heart of Gloucester County with the financial support from the Pascale Sykes Foundation for a Pureland East-West Community Shuttle. The grant of 1.2 million, over three years, will support this shuttle that will provide low cost, easy access to the Pureland Industrial Park, as well as other needed locations including access to supportive services, programs, medical, retail, etc., along the route and connect with current NJT bus routes. The County has public transportation running north and south, but there are no options for residents who are dependent on public transportation to go east and west, unless they take multiple transit routes and transfers. The shuttle started June 1, runs Monday to Friday for the day shifts, with 10 stops starting at the Avandale Park & Ride, through Williamstown, Glassboro, Mullica Hill, Swedesboro and end at the Pureland Industrial Park.
