|---|---|
| Continued from Form 990, Part I, Line 1, Mission Statement | participation in government, and increased understanding of major public policy issues through education. |
| Continued from Form 990, Part III, Line 4a, Program Service Accomplishments | With almost 2 million registered voters, Los Angeles alone has the largest municipal community of voters in the western United States. The LWVLAEF serves not only the approximately 4 million people in the City of Los Angeles, but also the people in seven adjacent cities: Agoura Hills, Beverly Hills, Calabasas, Culver City, the City of San Fernando, West Hollywood, and Westlake Village. These cities represent a combined total population of 4.1 million. Our voter service, civic education, and youth engagement programs are delivered in person, in print, and on line with the overall goal of reaching as many people as possible through LWVLAEF publication and volunteer resources. Voter Service Here we offer a host of programs and services specifically intended to help people maneuver the complexities of the voting process and recognize the importance of exercising their vote. Our GET REGISTERED - GET INVOLVED - GET ACTIVE programs and services include ballot measure education, a speakers bureau, a year-round voter hotline, candidate and election related issue forums, publications, and the signature SmartVoter.org Web site. The public's need for our clear, concise, and unbiased information is demonstrated by the 34,000 pieces of literature that was distributed; 59,000 views on our education social media site (in one week alone); the over 46,000 web hits on our public website for just the four weeks leading up to each the election. The need for our information is also demonstrated by the over 290,000 SmartVoter.org look-ups. The Education Fund supports SmartVoter.org's multi-state website with personalized information and resources on candidates and ballot measures in local and statewide elections. SmartVoter.org is one of the most comprehensive and reliable sources of unbiased information for voters on the Web. The service is made available to the public through partnerships with the League of Women Voters of California and election officials of various states and local communities around the U.S. Volunteers contact local candidates to post information, assist the public with questions about the site, and, in general, promote the site to local residents. Youth Engagement Services (YES) A cornerstone of the mission of the League of Women Voters has been to encourage informed and active participation in government and to encourage civil discourse. The youth engagement initiative, which is original to the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles EF, uses hands-on experience to teach Los Angeles area high school students about local government and civic engagement. Our YES serves as a model for other organizations. It incorporates a relationship between experienced League volunteers, faculty members, and students. Under the mentorship of the volunteers, students learn and apply critical thinking skills and practice how to be actively involved in public problem-solving while maintaining civic engagement with service learning projects. Civic and Voter Education A key part of the LWVLAEF's mission, we study important community issues at all governmental levels in an unbiased manner and to present the results of those studies to the public. The LWVLAEF works towards this goal through League days, issue forums, study committees, and publications. The LWVLAEF recognizes that there is a great deal of work still to be done to educate the growing and diversifying population of the greater Los Angeles area about elections and the way their government works. It is reaching out to new communities and providing culturally-specific resources in different languages. As often as not, it is up to voters to make the important decisions about how their government is to spend increasingly scarce funds. Without the information to do so, information free from partisan rhetoric, it is much harder to choose wisely for our future. |
