STATEMENT OF PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A THE BROAD INSTITUTE OPERATES FOR EDUCATIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC PURPOSES AND IS A RESEARCH INSTITUTION AIMED AT PROPELLING THE TRANSFORMATION OF MEDICINE, BY BRINGING POWERFUL NEW APPROACHES TO BEAR ON THE UNDERSTANDING AND TREATMENT OF DISEASE. ITS RESEARCH PROGRAM ENCOMPASSES MULTIDISCIPLINARY AND INTEGRATED PROGRAMS IN CANCER, CELL CIRCUITS, CHEMICAL BIOLOGY, EPIGENOMICS, GENOME SEQUENCING AND ANALYSIS, INFECTIOUS DISEASE, MEDICAL AND POPULATION GENETICS, METABOLISM, AND PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS. BROAD TEAMS CARRY OUT LARGE-SCALE PROJECTS TACKLING PROBLEMS THAT CANNOT BE DONE IN A TYPICAL LABORATORY. SUCH TEAMS INCLUDE GENOMICS, IMAGING, METABOLIC PROFILING, PROTEOMICS, GENETIC PERTUBATION, TECHNOLOGY LABS, AND THERAPEUTIC DEVELOPMENT. THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 963 PUBLICATIONS IN 2014 RESULTING FROM BROAD RESEARCH, WITH OVER 5,400 PUBLICATIONS TO DATE. THE BROAD INSTITUTE HOLDS AN ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC RETREAT, A TWO-DAY MEETING FEATURING PRESENTATIONS AND POSTERS ON A VARIETY OF RESEARCH PROJECTS ACROSS THE INSTITUTE, ATTENDED BY ALMOST A THOUSAND RESEARCHERS FROM THE BROAD COMMUNITY. THE BROAD'S EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM ENGAGES BOSTON-CAMBRIDGE AREA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH BY PROVIDING SUMMER INTERNSHIPS AND SEMESTER-LONG RESEARCH PROJECTS. IN 2014, 14 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN A SUMMER SCHOLARS PROGRAM, ONE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT PARTICIPATED IN RESEARCH PROJECTS DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR, ONE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT INTERNED WITH THE OFFICE OF EDUCATION AND OUTREACH DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR, AND ONE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT INTERNED WITH THE OFFICE OF EDUCATION AND OUTREACH DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR AND SUMMER. IN ADDITION, THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM SPONSORS CLASS VISITS TO THE BROAD. THERE WERE 66 EDUCATIONAL TOURS IN 2014 THAT INCLUDED APPROXIMATELY 1,500 MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL, UNDERGRADUATE, AND GRADUATE STUDENTS, AS WELL AS POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARS AND MEMBERS OF PARTNER INSTITUTIONS. BROAD ALSO TRAVELED TO SEVERAL LOCAL SCHOOLS TO PARTICIPATE IN CAREER PANELS AND JUDGE A SCIENCE FAIR, SERVING APPROXIMATELY 300 STUDENTS. THERE WERE FOUR MIDSUMMER NIGHTS' SCIENCE AND ONE SCIENCE FOR ALL SEASONS PUBLIC LECTURES WITH APPROXIMATELY 1,300 ATTENDEES. BROAD PARTICIPATED IN NETPALS IN 2014, WHICH MATCHED 25 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH 25 SCIENTIST MENTORS. IN 2014, BROAD BEGAN A PARTNERSHIP WITH CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC SCHOOLS SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO GENETICS AND EVOLUTION THAT INCLUDES 8TH GRADE CURRICULUM DESIGN, CO-PLANNING WITH TEACHERS AND SCIENTISTS, AND CLASSROOM VISITS. THIS INITIATIVE INVOLVED 24 SCIENTISTS, 10 TEACHERS/SCHOOL STAFF, AND 350 STUDENTS. ALSO IN 2014, THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM WORKED WITH BROAD SCIENTISTS TO DESIGN AND PILOT TWO LESSONS IN THREE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS THAT ALLOWED STUDENTS TO ANALYZE BROAD DATA. APPROXIMATELY 10 BROAD SCIENTISTS WERE INVOLVED IN THESE INITIATIVES, SERVING APPROXIMATELY 175 STUDENTS AND FIVE TEACHERS. TO HELP INSPIRE YOUNG PEOPLE AND INCREASE THE NUMBER OF SCIENTISTS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS, THE BROAD'S DIVERSITY INITIATIVE IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH OFFERS PROGRAMS FOR MINORITIES AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF THEIR EDUCATION AND CAREERS. IN 2014, 14 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND 12 UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THESE PROGRAMS. IN ADDITION, THIS PROGRAM ATTRACTED 200 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO ATTENDED A LECTURE DURING THE SUMMER. |
