| Form 990, Part III, Line 4d Description of other program services | (Expenses $ including grants of $) Social Responsibility: For over 100 years, the Rye Y has been a hub of community life and a catalyst for positive change. Every day, our mission takes us outside the walls of the Y, into schools, senior centers, town halls, local businesses and houses of worship. We support edible gardens, pedestrian safety, and school wellness programs. We offer members of all ages the opportunity to make a difference through community service. We bring hope to cancer survivors and help at-risk adults face chronic disease head-on. We do all this and so much more while keeping a powerful promise: no-one will be turned away from a Y program or activity because he or she can't pay. From the partnerships that foster strong communities to the small group programs that promote health and well-being, the spirit of social responsibility infuses every aspect of our work. In 2015, we demonstrated our commitment to social responsibility through the following: * Even with the pressure of work and family obligations, YMCA members still feel the need to connect with their community and each other in meaningful ways. Togetherhood is a national Y initiative that involves members of all ages in projects that benefit the communities we serve...and beyond. In 2015, the Rye Y's Togetherhood Committee organized five diverse projects, allowing 88 members to volunteer for the following organizations: My Sisters' Place, Rye Nature Center, Don Bosco Community Center, Bread of Life food pantry, and The Sharing Shelf. * Healthy living can seem out of reach for those who are facing economic struggles. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, no-one will be turned away from a Y program or activity for financial reasons. In 2015 alone, we awarded over 520,000 to individuals and families who needed a helping hand. * Imagine a garden oasis in an urban setting, one that supplies fresh, affordable, healthy vegetables to local residents. That dream came closer to reality when the Rye Y joined Port Chester Cares, the Port Chester Housing Authority, Family Services of Westchester, the NAACP and elected officials for a groundbreaking at Weber Community Garden last September. The garden is an initiative of the Healthier Port Chester coalition, which was founded by the Rye Y in 2013. It will be maintained and enjoyed by residents of the village's housing authority. * Water safety isn't just learned in the water. Last June, the Rye Y's Assistant Aquatics Director visited 18 classes at Osborn Elementary School in Rye, teaching hundreds of children in grades K-4 about staying safe in and around pools and other bodies of water. * We supported Walk to School Weeks, providing resources, advice and assistance to schools throughout our service area. In Rye, we convened meetings of municipal and school officials and community advocates to review pedestrian safety projects and policies. * Teens are getting the message: texting while walking or driving can lead to tragedy. As part of the Rye YMCA's 4th Annual Heads Up! Poster Contest, 74 Rye High School students created posters that show the dangers of distraction. After the students selected 28 semi-finalists, a judging panel composed of community leaders selected first, second and third place winners. Heads Up! is just one component of the Rye Y's Safe Routes to School initiative. * The Rye Y brought together parent volunteers who serve on their schools' Wellness Committees for information-sharing and support. The Rye Y coordinates these meetings, which involve representatives from Rye, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Harrison, and Rye Neck, and have featured special guest speakers. We also participate in an annual series of "Crunchy Carnivals," family wellness nights held at Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Rye Neck elementary schools. * In February, ten years after a landmark study found that the current generation of children could lead shorter lives than their parents, the Rye Y's Healthier Sound Shore Coalition hosted a panel discussion on the current state of childhood obesity. * In early November, Rye Y staff led a developmental workshop for 150 Mamaroneck teacher aides. Three training sessions of 50 participants each focused on practices to improve the emotional and physical well-being of students and prevent bullying. Role playing and hands-on exercises allowed participants to learn helpful tactics and recess games first hand. |
