Communications - BMA shares news and information about the latest evidence-based research and innovative care in Medicare. This is done by posting information on the BMA website, emailing ally organizations and interested people in healthcare policy, and through the media. BMA prepares summaries and commentary on policies and information on innovative models of care that are also on the BMA website and shared with the public and other interested policy makers via media outlets.

Research and Policy - BMA has several key research initiatives and policy positions that support Medicare Adantage as an option under Medicare. BMA reaches out to a wide variety of stakeholders who provide care and services to Medicare beneficiaries. We identify those working in Medicare Advantage and send them information, meet and/or speak to them by phone. Once they agree to be an ally organization we interact electronically and in-person to seek their advice, provide information and build understanding of their experience and positions. BMA also reaches out to beneficiaries through a targeted digital campaign to seek those individuals interested in MA and in being advocates for the policy.

Ally Recruitment and Engagement - BMA is a coalition of advocacy organizations, aging service agencies, plans, providers and retiree organizations who support Medicare Advantage as an option under Medicare. BMA funds academic and research initiatives to do specific analyses and research projects. These projects are usually time limited and are rarely intended to take longer than one year. These findings are typically posted on the BMA website, shared with BMA allies and policy makers, and provided to the media. The purpose is to educate and provide information and offer independent evidence of how Medicare Advantage works.

Footnote for uncertain tax position under FIN 48 (Part X) The accounting standard on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements as uncertain tax positions. Under that guidance, BMA may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of BMA and various positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business income tax (UBIT). The tax benefits recognized in the financial statements from such a position are measured based on the largest benefit that has a greater than 50% likelihood of being realized upon ultimate settlement. There were no unrecognized tax benefits related to uncertain tax positions identified or recorded as liabilities for the current year.BMAs policy would be to recognize interest and penalties, if any, on tax positions related to its unrecognized tax benefits in income tax expense in the financial statements. No interest and penalties were assessed or recorded during the year.

Form 990 governing body review Part VI line 11 The BMA Board of Directors will review and approve the annual IRS Form 990 prior to filing. Approval shall be in writing or shall be given by majority vote at a meeting of the Board, in which case it shall be included in the minutes of the Board meeting.
Conflict of interest policy compliance Part VI line 12c BMA Board Members sign a statement on an annual basis that states they have received the conflict of interest policy, understand the policy and agree to comply with the policy. Board Members must also disclose any actual or possible conflicts of interest on an ongoing basis.If a possible conflict of interest arises, that person shall leave the meeting while the remaining Board Members decide if a conflict of interest exists.

A compensation survey was used to identify the compensation percentiles for the comparable nonprofits. In-person requests for copies will be honored immediately and without charge (if BMA has photocopying equipment at the place of inspection). Written requests will be honored within thirty days. For written requests, BMA may charge a reasonable fee for copying plus actual postage, but, if so, BMA will provide timely notice of the approximate cost within 7 days of receiving the request.
