What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? To encourage the improvement of agriculture, horticulture and the mechanical arts through the holding of an annual fair, supporting educational programs and providing scholarships and grants to promote such improvement.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 The Society annually sponsors the Long Island Fair, the only New York State sanctioned agricultural, horticultural and craft fair for the counties of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk. The Society has sponsored the fair annually since 1842. The fair is currently held at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, a mid-19th century living-history museum owned and operated by Nassau County (the "County"). Since the County operates the site, it collects the admission receipts during the fair, but pays the Society a management fee and reimburses the Society for certain of its fair related expenses. New York State reimburses the Society for a portion of the prize money awarded to winning fair entries. The Society has one part-time employee, so it primarily uses County employees plus approximately 200+ volunteers during the fair. In 2015 the fair had 13,956 visitors, 1,128 exhibitors, 2,863 entries and paid out $12,481 in premium money.
