Dear Service Center Representative: Please forgive the late filing of the form 990 for The Colorado Horsemen's Council and we ask for an abatement of the late penalty fee. It was our belief that the first extension had been filed and received by the IRS. Upon inquiring about filing an additional extension, we learned that the first one had not been filed. We have had audits in the past with a CPA firm, which has been filing the tax return as well. For the last two fiscal years, we have not had the funds to conduct an audit, and the filing of the tax return was completed internally. In the first year, the auditor completed the extension filing for us, and we inadvertently understood they would also file an extension for us for the current return. After contacting them to request a second extension to be filed, we found out that the first extension had not been completed. Upon learning of this, we have worked diligently to acquire the required information to complete and file the tax return. We ask that you please consider the filing history of the organization. The Organization has a history of filing its tax returns on time since 2000 (when it underwent a change in management of the organization) and will continue to do so. As the contract accounting employee, I will make sure that any future extensions that need to be filed are properly completed. The organization now has a system in place, regardless of audit, to make sure any future returns are filed on a timely basis.
