| Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line 28 | Public education events includes educational events at market and at many other community events, as well as media interviews and talks at meetings of local organizations where we can influence community leaders. These efforts are designed to increase the number of community members who understand in the value of locally grown, direct-marketed foods and other agricultural products. This understanding is critical to public support of land use laws and other government policies that benefit local gowers. Cooking demonstrations and sampling events benefit non-vendors as well as vendors in the farm-direct marketing line of business. Another goal of these efforts is community health promotion, which is tied to increased consumption of fruits and vegetables. |
| Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line 29 | Site-Management. Our farmers markets are the primary way that most local residents learn about farm direct marketers. The sights, smells and sounds people experience simply by walking in or near one of our markets are a senory advertisement for the whole concept and value of locally grown agricultural products obtained directly from the producers. The farmers markets build awareness and credibility for farm-direct products through word-of-mouth advertising among those who visit and tell their associates. |
| Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line 30 | Advertising. Promotes public awareness and support for local, seasonal agricultural products that can be obtained directly from growers, who benefit regardles of whether they are currently vending at one of our farmers markets. Ads typically focus on whats in season locally. Some of these efforts are carried out through free social networking methods. |
| Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line 31 | Educating farmers includes CAFMs frequent phone, email and face to face contact with producers who are considering the farm-direct marketing line of business. Many of these farmers are not market vendors and may choose other channels of farm-direct marketing and not farmers markets. We are a common starting point for farmers needing information about regulation, insurance, marketing methods, equipment and packaging, access gleaning services and other nuts and bolts topics. We are involved in planning or consulted by other planners of the statewide farm-direct marketing conference, a farmer-chef connection meeting and other events that help these farmers. |
| Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line 31 | Government relations creates a positive business environment for farmers engaging in the farm-direct marketing line of business, which relies on farmland remaining available close to population centers. To do this, we conduct research and keep relevant decision-makers aware of the value of locally grown products in supporting other local business activity. This knowledge among those with land use powers benefits farm stands, CSAs and u-picks as much as it does farmers markets. Government contact at the state level involves clarifying food safety regulations and providing administrative and programmatic guidance for the two Farm Direct Nutrition Programs WIC and Senior, the WIC Fruit and Vegetable Vouchers and SNAP for farm-direct marketers. These government contacts are of benefit to all farm direct marketers in Oregon, even those who do not attend markets and are not in our six-county area. |
