WE CELEBRATED THE SCHUYLKILL RIVER TRAIL'S DESIGNATION AS USA TODAY'S BEST URBAN TRAIL SEPTEMBER 2, 2015. WE PUBLICIZED GROUNDBREAKINGS AND RIBBON CUTTINGS FOR THE MANAYUNK BRIDGE, NEWTOWN TRAIL, BIKE RACKS AT WISSAHICKON STATION ANDCAMDEN'S GREENWAY RIBBON CUTTING. IN FALL 2015, WE HELD FIVE CIRCUIT WORKSHOPS IN EACH OF THE FIVE PA COUNTIES TO BRIEF AGENCIES AND ADVOCATES ABOUT FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES. WE URGED OUR CONSTITUENTS TO COMMENT ON THE NEW JERSEY 2016 TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM. AS A RESULT OF OUR ADVOCACY, THE DVRPC BOARD APPROVED PROGRAMMING $5 MILLION FOR CIRCUIT TRAILS IN PENNSYLVANIA IN JULY 2015. WE ENCOURAGED OUR MEMBERS TO ATTEND A BOARD MEETING OF THE BURLINGTON COUNTY FREEHOLDERS TO DEMONSTRATE SUPPORT OF ADJUSTING THE USE OF ITS OPEN SPACE TAX FOR PARKS AND TRAILS. THE BICYCLE COALITION RELEASED A VISION ZERO REPORT EARLY THIS YEAR, IDENTIFING THE MOST DANGEROUS NEIGHBORHOODS, CORRIDORS, AND STREETS FOR PHILADELPHIA'S ROAD USERS, AND WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT. 2015 ENDED WITH OUR VISION ZERO CONFERENCE AND PHILADELPHIA CITY COUNCIL PASSING THEIR FIRST VISION ZERO BILL, WHICH WILL RAISE FEES ON VEHICLE REGISTRATION TO HELP BUILD SAFER STREETS FOR EVERYONE. WE ALSO HOSTED A MINI FORUM ABOUT VISION ZERO IN MARCH 2016 EXAMINING OPPORTUNITIES TO IMPLEMENT AUTOMATIC ENFORCEMENT OPTIONS TO ENHANCE AND SUPPORT THE MORE TRADITIONAL EFFORTS TO CHANGE DRIVER BEHAVIOR, ESPECIALLY WAYS THAT ENCOURAGE COMPLIANCE WITH SPEED LIMITS IN AREAS SUCH AS ROOSEVELT BLVD WHICH ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR HIGH RATE OF INJURY AND FATALITIES. WE SAID GOODBYE TO OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF 13 YEARS AND WELCOMED OUR DEPUTY DIRECTOR SARAH CLARK STUART TO TAKE THE REINS IN JANUARY 2016. ALSO IN JANUARY 2016, THE BICYCLE COALITION OF GREATER PHILADELPHIA RELEASED THE PHILADELPHIA BIKE LANE TOOLKIT, AN ONLINE RESOURCE MEANT TO INFORM AND EMPOWER PHILADELPHIANS TO BETTER REQUEST NEW BIKE LANES IN THEIR DISTRICTS. WE WORKED TO ADVANCE SAFER BICYCLE FACILITIES ON WASHINGTON AVENUE, CIVIC CENTER BOULEVARD (PHILADELPHIA'S SECOND CONTRAFLOW LANE) AND ADVOCATED FOR 24 INTERSECTIONS TO BE MADE SAFER BY REMOVAL OR PAVING OVER OF TROLLEY TRACKS AND POTHOLES. |
| Pt X | PART III, 4b Safe Routes Philly promotes biking and walking as fun, healthy forms of transportation in Philadelphia elementary schools. Through a train the teacher program, the program aims to increase walking and biking to Philadelphia elementary schools through the implementation of pedestrian and bicycle safety education. In it's sixth year, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia worked with the City of Philadelphia to identify and prioritize schools near nigh crash intersections; BCGP assisted three schools with walkability audits, supported four Get Active Schools with ongoing encouragement activities, supported over twenty walk and bike to school days, established walking school buses at 2 elementary schools and engaged 6th - 12th graders in critical thinking about walking and biking. | Other | PART III, 4d Better Bike Share Partnership is a collaborative initiative aimed at building equitable and replicable bike share systems. The partners include The City of Philadelphia, Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) and the People For Bikes Foundation. The City of Philadelphia launched a new bike share system in April 2015; this grant funded 20 stations in underserved communities in Philly, which the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia is working to engage through building partnerships, attending community events, leading rides, and teaching urban riding classes. |
