| FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION | THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF PHOENIX WAS FOUNDED UPON THE BELIEF THAT THE MOST ENRICHING LEARNING EXPERIENCES ARE THE ONES THAT ARE ROOTED IN PLAY. THE MUSEUM EXISTS IN ORDER TO FOSTER THE JOY OF LEARNING THROUGH PLAY, WITH A MISSION TO ENGAGE THE MINDS, MUSCLES AND IMAGINATIONS OF CHILDREN AND THE GROWN-UPS WHO CARE ABOUT THEM. AT THE MUSEUM, CHILDREN EXPLORE THREE FLOORS OF DYNAMIC, EVIDENCE-BASED AND EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS, AS WELL AS HUNDREDS OF PROGRAMS A YEAR IN THE ART STUDIO AND THE CLASSROOM. SINCE OPENING IN 2008, THE MUSEUM HAS HOSTED ALMOST 2,080,000 VISITORS, 325,416 DURING THE YEAR ENDED AUGUST 31, 2015. AND AS OF AUGUST 31, 2015, IT HAD 19,048 MEMBERS. OVER THE YEARS, THE MUSEUM HAS RECEIVED MORE THAN TWO DOZEN LOCAL AND NATIONAL AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE. IN 2015 ALONE, THE MUSEUM WAS NAMED THE THIRD BEST CHILDREN'S MUSEUM IN THE COUNTRY BY THE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION ZONE, AND THE BEST "HOT-DAY DIVERSION" FOR KIDS BY PHOENIX MAGAZINE AND "THE BEST PLAY PLACE FOR YOUNG KIDS" BY THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC. THE MUSEUM PROVIDES AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE FAMILIES GALVANIZE, EXPLORE FREELY TOGETHER, AND NURTURE THE TRANSFER OF VALUES FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT. THE MUSEUM IS A SOUGHT-AFTER DESTINATION FOR VISITORS FROM AROUND ARIZONA AND BEYOND AND IS A KEY PART OF OUR VITAL DOWNTOWN. ENSURING ACCESS FOR ALL THE MUSEUM'S EVERY CHILD PROGRAM IS THE TYPE OF FREE (OR LOW COST) OPPORTUNITY FOR OUT-OF-SCHOOL ENRICHMENT THAT CHILDREN IN OUR COMMUNITY NEED IN ORDER TO LEARN, THRIVE, AND BEAT THE ODDS. THROUGH THIS PROGRAM, THE MUSEUM AIMS TO PROVIDE ALL CHILDREN IN THE PHOENIX METRO AREA WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF PHOENIX DESPITE FINANCIAL HARDSHIP. THE MUSEUM PARTNERS WITH LOCAL SOCIAL SERVICES ORGANIZATIONS SERVING LOW-INCOME OR AT-RISK CHILDREN, DISTRIBUTING FREE AND REDUCED PRICE PASSES TO THE MUSEUM. IN FACT, THE MUSEUM PARTNERED WITH 70 SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES LAST YEAR TO PROVIDE 54,000 PASSES TO THOSE WITH THE GREATEST NEED-INCLUDING HOMELESS CHILDREN, LOW-INCOME FAMILIES, CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE, STUDENTS FROM TITLE ONE SCHOOLS, AND CHILDREN WHO HAVE BEEN ABUSED OR NEGLECTED. IN ADDITION, THE EVERY CHILD PROGRAM ALLOWS THE MUSEUM TO OPEN FOR FREE ON THE FIRST FRIDAY NIGHT OF MOST MONTHS. FINALLY, EVERY CHILD DISTRIBUTES MUSEUM MEMBERSHIPS TO LOW-INCOME FAMILIES RECEIVING NUTRITIONAL ASSISTANCE FROM THE STATE OF ARIZONA. PROVIDING ENGAGING PROJECTS, EXHIBITS AND PROGRAMMING FOR YOUNG CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES PROJECTS LIKE: COMMUNITY BUILD PROJECTS-MUSEUM PATRONS OF ALL AGES ENGAGE IN CREATING LARGE GROUP PROJECTS THAT ARE DISPLAYED AT THE MUSEUM. FOR EXAMPLE, IN THE ART STUDIO HUNDREDS OF VISITORS, AGES TWO THROUGH ADULTS, CREATED A VILLAGE WALL MURAL. ON A DAILY BASIS, HUNDREDS OF PATRONS PAINT THE PLAYHOUSE IN THE ART STUDIO. FOR OUTREACH EVENTS, THOUSANDS OF CDS WERE DECORATED BY PATRONS INCORPORATING THEIR WISHES AND DREAMS AND HUNG IN OUR ATRIUM. FOR AN ARTIST IN RESIDENCY THAT INCLUDED THE DESIGN OF THE SOMEPLACE EXHIBIT AREA, PATRONS CREATED COPPER COIL WEAVINGS TO HANG FROM THE CEILING. THESE PROJECTS OCCUR THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THROUGHOUT THE MUSEUM. COMMUNITY ART-"ALL CALLS" FOR COMMUNITY INSPIRED ARTWORK HAVE RESULTED IN PROJECTS SUCH AS SEA CREATURES MADE FROM RECYCLABLES THAT HANG FROM OUR CLIMBER. CHILDREN'S ARTWORK IS SOLICITED FROM SCHOOLS AND ORGANIZATIONS TO BE ON DISPLAY. PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS ALSO DISPLAY THEIR WORK AT THE MUSEUM. LITERACY-EACH YEAR THE MUSEUM DISTRIBUTES THOUSANDS OF BOOKS DONATED THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH FIRST BOOK AND FRIENDS OF THE PHOENIX PUBLIC LIBRARY. THESE BOOKS ARE DISTRIBUTED TO UNDERSERVED FAMILIES IN THE COMMUNITY. EXHIBITS LIKE: BLOCKMANIA - IN EVERY COUNTRY, CHILDREN AT PLAY SIT, SQUAT OR KNEEL ON THE FLOOR, DEEPLY ENGAGED IN MANIPULATING A BUNCH OF SMALL ITEMS BEFORE THEM: BLOCKS. THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THIS EXHIBIT ARE TO DEVELOP STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS) SKILLS, SPARK CREATIVITY, IMAGINATION, AND INNOVATION, AND OPPORTUNITIES TO CULTIVATE SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL SKILLS. MOVE IT - AN 18,000 SQUARE FOOT OUTDOOR EXHIBIT THAT ENCOURAGES CHILDREN TO MOVE, TO EXPERIMENT AND TAKE RISKS. THE CLIMBER - A 3-STORY WHIMSICAL STRUCTURE THAT WAS BUILT TO GIVE CHILDREN THE EXPERIENCE OF CLIMBING A TREE, ENCOURAGING CHILDREN TO TAKE SMALL RISKS AND GAIN CONFIDENCE TO TRY NEW THINGS. NOODLE FOREST - THIS EXHIBIT OFFERS CHILDREN THE CHANCE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW THEIR BODIES FIT WITHIN THEIR SURROUNDINGS. SPATIAL AWARENESS IS RECOGNIZING WHERE YOUR BODY IS IN RELATION TO OTHER THINGS. THE MARKET - A GREAT PLACE FOR IMAGINATIVE PLAY INCLUDING ROLE PLAY, IMITATIVE BEHAVIORS AND CREATING SCENARIOS TO ENACT. PROGRAMMING LIKE: ART STUDIO-THE ART STUDIO PROVIDES AN ARRAY OF PROJECTS EMPLOYING MULTIPLE MEDIAS THAT ARE MULTIDISCIPLINARY IN NATURE, RELATED TO THE SCIENCES, SOCIAL STUDIES, MATH, LANGUAGE ARTS, AND ART HISTORY. CLASSROOM PROGRAMMING-ON A DAILY BASIS THE MUSEUM CONDUCTS PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES AND PARENTS/CAREGIVERS FOCUSING ON TOPICS SUCH AS LITERACY, EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT, MATH, THE SCIENCES, THE ARTS, SOCIAL STUDIES, NUTRITION, AND FITNESS, ETC. OUR PROGRAMMING IS AIMED AT BUILDING CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING, POSITIVE SOCIAL INTERACTION AND CELEBRATING DIVERSITY AND, ACTING AS A GATEWAY TO OTHER CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS. EDUCATING PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS ABOUT CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND PARENTING TECHNIQUES THROUGH PROGRAMS LIKE: BRAIN TIME - BRAIN TIME WAS DESIGNED ALONGSIDE NEW DIRECTIONS INSTITUTE IN ORDER TO PROVIDE PARENTS WITH GUIDANCE, TOOLS AND RESOURCES THEY NEED TO DEVELOP A HEALTHY ATTACHMENT WITH THEIR CHILD AND ENHANCE BRAIN DEVELOPMENT THROUGH NURTURING INTERACTIONS AND PLAY. RAISING A READER - WE WORK WITH SOUTHWEST HUMAN DEVELOPMENT TO PROVIDE THEIR RAISING A READER PROGRAM ONSITE MONTHLY AT THE MUSEUM. DURING THE PROGRAM, PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS ARE PROVIDED HANDS-ON INSTRUCTION FROM A LITERACY EXPERT ON HOW TO INCORPORATE LITERACY ACTIVITIES INTO EVERYDAY LIFE WITH THEIR CHILDREN. PARENT PALS - THE PARENT PALS PROGRAM AT THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF PHOENIX IS DESIGNED TO PROMOTE SOCIAL CHANGE FOR PARENTS ALLOWING THEM TO GAIN CONFIDENCE IN SUPPORTING THEIR CHILD'S HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT THROUGH INTERACTIVE, PLANNED ACTIVITIES THAT PROMOTE BONDING AND LEARNING WITH THEIR CHILDREN. THE PROGRAM WELCOMES FAMILIES WHO ARE NOW, OR HAVE RECENTLY, EXPERIENCED CHALLENGING LIFE SITUATIONS SUCH AS HOMELESSNESS OR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, AS WELL AS MOMS PARTICIPATING IN PREGNANCY SUPPORT PROGRAMS. EVERY LITTLE STEP COUNTS - THIS PROGRAM IS HELD AT THE MUSEUM BY ST. VINCENT DE PAUL. EVERY STEP LITTLE STEP COUNTS WITH ST VINCENT DE PAUL BRINGS UNINSURED WORKING-POOR HISPANIC CHILDREN 8-11 DIAGNOSED AS AT RISK FOR TYPE 2 DIABETES AND THEIR FAMILIES TO USE THE MUSEUM FOR AN EXERCISE REGIMEN, WHICH RESULTS IN CALIBRATED BODY MASS CHANGES OVER THE COURSE OF THE PROGRAM. |
